She did a great job. There are all kinds of journeys. Some voluntary and sometimes you have to be dragged kicking and screaming to go down certain roads. It really is how you handle the trip. Doug French - BlogHer 2008 Community Keynote Speakers
from Out On The Stoop July 23, 2008
Doug's blog is Laid Off Dad and this is a slice of his life trying to inspire his son. Inspiration is a tricky thing and it might take a bit of time for his son to really understand. I sat in the audience with envy. I don't have that kind of "dad" parenting experience in my life. This is the Windows Video version. This is the traditional QuickTime version. This is an Audio mp3 version. I can sat back and wondered is that what a good father does each and every day? The good and the bad and the ability to see the humor in it all.

Inside an Essayist's Mind: Part 3: Concluding the Timed Essay
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 20, 2008
(Part 3 of 3. Part 1 here; Part 2 here.) This is a powerful way to model adult writing for students: screencasting my own "mock exam" reading of a poem - while talking through my thoughts as I read it - and then composing my own essay about that poem, talking through my writer's choices as I write the essay - all of which the students can watch and hear as it happens. It's as close to being inside the mind and eyes of a reading and writing adult as a student will ever get. In three parts, I read, plan, and write the essay from start to finish, under the same timed conditions as students in AP Literature timed exams.

SPJ Citizen Journalism Academy - Publishing Truth
from Out On The Stoop July 07, 2008
One of the SPJ-CJA sessions of the day concerned media law. I will be honest and say I am very interested in this topic; you got the Associated Press nonsense, you have Viacom lusting after user information and lord knows what will jump up next week. This is the Windows Media Video Version This is the QuickTime Video Version This is the iPod Video Version What of the content creators? What rights do we have? This is a brief video clip of Professor Gary C. Williams talking about our rights to print/published factual information. There is one exception. If the information involves matters of national security then no, that is not an automatic gimme. I will add more reference links but for now if you need more information about the law, bloggers and the nature of your rights please visit the Electronic Freedom Foundation's page Legal Guide for Bloggers Added July 6, 2008 The Knight Citizen News Network has a legal information module to help bloggers/vloggers understand legal risk. It is heating up folks, protect yourself.

Modern Malady: THE SOUND OF MUSIC
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 23, 2008
.IN OUR TIME, REPETITION ITSELF HAS BECOME THE FORM OF EXPRESSION. MODERN MALADY. NOT MELODY. MALADY. Presenting to you a handful of random musical selections from the last century against another batch of random music created in this decade by the people who were born in the last century - except Mr. RichardWagner who wrote the piece of music in the middle of the film 'Tristan & Isolde' in 1857 on a piano. WHAT IS MUSIC?The kinetic twin: sound and image of the image the sound is made and of sounds we make music so in the music there must be imagery and if the imagery is not in the music inscribed in sound, in pitch, in rhthmn, in melody then it doesn't move my spirit. There is so much vacant stimulation for the body and our physical senses, which by now is just the hardware, the property of the market wherever you are in the world.. Música can't be intellectualised or it ends up being just plain bollocks [John Zorn]. Also music can't be just entertaining, because there is room for the dance of ideas and sensual traits of music to merge and move you, not the apes.

Rachel Shukert (BSS #217)
from The Bat Segundo Show June 20, 2008
Rachel Shukert is the author of Have You No Shame? Condition of the Show: Contending with tenuous widows and the mysterious circumstances of Mr. Segundo s death. Author: Rachel Shukert Subjects Discussed: [List forthcoming] EXCERPT FROM SHOW: Shukert: Jason Priestly and Fred Savage were the two guys on TV who I had big crushes on as a child. I had a picture of Fred Savage in my locker that I cut out from the newspaper. I remember that he was holding a candy box. Like a Valentine s heart box. And I would pretend that he was holding it for me. And then when I got a little older, I thought Jason Priestly was the handsomest man I had ever seen. I mean, when I say a little older, I mean ten. But I had a big poster of him in my room too. Correspondent: Who was the first crush you had? Shukert: Gene Kelly. Correspondent: Really? And he s not referenced in the book. Shukert: No. That s private. (laughs) Correspondent: Not anymore. It s public now. But this is an interesting distinction. Are you slightly ashamed of these crushes? Shukert: No, I m not ashamed. But there s a difference between being ashamed of something and just having something close to your heart. (laughs) Correspondent: Wow. Well, I m curious. How much does a crush linger over the course of one s life like this? I mean, you can be safe with Jason Priestly and Fred Savage, but Shukert: I don t have crushes on them anymore. Correspondent: But you still have a crush on Gene Kelly. Shukert: Yes, but he s dead. Correspondent: He s dead. The dead people are the ones to really lust after the best. Shukert: Yeah, I think that that s true. Correspondent: Because there s no way that you can possibly consummate it. Shukert: I also loved Paul Newman as a child. Correspondent: What are you going to do when he dies? Shukert: I ll be sad. I ll mourn like a widow.
