http://uni3d.com/ - This is a 3d remake of MC Escher's Relativity I made a few years back in normal flat imagery, and anaglyph stereo style 3D. I put the normal version first assuming most people won't have 3d glasses, but those who do are in for a nifty little bit of eye candy... It's a bummer that red, being quite important to the 3D aspect of this, gets made extra crunchy by the compression, though... Since the latest trend (for better or worse) of the animation industry seems to be making everything in '3D', I figured I'd give it a shot to get a feel for what I'll have to deal with once I get out in the industry. After wondering what to do for a while and trying a test or two I remembered I already had the assets for something I'd want to see in 3D more than anything else! This was modeled/textured in Maya 7, and updated with new lighting and rendered with the stereo camera rig in Maya 2009. For speed it was rendered using Maya Software with depth map shadows, unlike the original version (as seen on my user profile page) using a series of slow but pretty Mental Ray area lights, all ray-traced. The stereo images were then processed and color corrected in Nuke to layer the anaglyphs and pull levels around in an attempt to correct the color distortion of standard red/cyan 3d glasses. (Though I'm working with a pretty cheap pair...) I must say; working on this normally was hard enough to keep oriented. This video uses a mathematical formula based upon an image Escher did (The Print Gallery), known in these days as the Droste Effect . This is my first videoclip as a Director, and it was made entirely using a Digital Reflex Camera, Canon's Mark III which captures up to 115 continuous pictures, at 10 fps. As this was really low budget video, it was made possible thanks to the help of lots and lots of friends. This video was inspired by the amazing pictures of Sebastian Perez Duarte (I mean that as an euphemism). I just wanted to add movement to those kind of images. All of the image process was made in my home computer, thank's to Pisco Bandito/Josh Sommers' tutorials, and Bill Hornes code. A friend of mine, Chema The Mecatronic , helped me automate all of the process. This is the result of almost 6 months of work. I think this video is very Escher-esce. I got this idea on Wednesday when I was on Skype. I kept pointing the camera at the screen. After that I went to Seesmic to record my first video and I ended up again pointing the camera at the screen and as I moved the camera around I noticed some cool shapes. That Seesmic video was never recorded.This video was done with an EyeToy camera for PlayStation 2. Incidentally, Windows Movie Maker is the only video editing software that recognized the camera so I used that to record this."beyond infinity" by lastfuture was provided by PodSafe Music Network.

In 1956 the Dutch graphic artist M. C. Escher made an unusual lithograph with the title "Print Gallery." It shows a young man viewing a print in an exhibition gallery. Among the buidlings depicted on the print, he sees paradoxically the very same gallery that he is standing in. A lot is known about the way in which Escher made his lithograph. It is not nearly as well known that it contains a hidden "Droste effect," or infinite repetition; but this is brought to light by a mathematical analysis of the studies used by Escher. On the basis of this discovery, a team of mathematicians at Leiden produced a series of hallucinating computer animations. These show, among other things, what happens inside the mysterious spot in the middle of the lithograph that Escher left blank.
