The Sweetest Trumpet of Charlie Spivak
from The Palomar on November 28, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
Charlie Spivak is another in my long list of Swing Era performers who never really made it to the first tier but still created a lot of great music during their careers. By all accounts "cheery, chubby Charlie", as he was known, was the kind of person we computer geeks might describe as WYSIWYG - What You See Is What You Get - a genuinely nice guy who cared about his music, his musicians, and his audience. His childhood years are a bit unclear; some biographers say he was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1907 while others show his birthplace as Hartford, Connecticut. Whatever his origins were, he showed his talent on the trumpet early on and joined a local dance band in the mid-1920s. This part of his life is also strangely murky. I found references to the bandleader's name as both Don Cavallaro and John Cavallaro, and conflicting statements that he performed with him while still in high school or only after graduation. The Cavallaro gig led to six years with a regional band, then on to that most incredible "incubator" of jazz talent, the Ben Pollack Orchestra. The Pollack band was the start of a series of associations with other up-and-coming stars including the Dorseys, Ray Noble, Raymond Scott, and most importantly Glenn Miller. It was Miller who not only convinced Charlie to leave studio work and form his own band, he put up the money to get it started and acted as a mentor when Charlie needed advice. The first Charlie Spivak Orchestra had a lot in common with the first Glenn Miller Orchestra. Namely, it went bankrupt! Like Miller, Charlie plunged back in. He bought out an existing band led by a relative unknown called Bill Downer (probably not a good name !) and the new incarnation of the Charlie Spivak Orchestra soon became one of the top bands in the country. He played mostly ballads and straight dance music in spite of his earlier jazz training, perhaps again being influenced by Glenn Miller's willingness to forgo pure jazz in the interest of greater popularity. The band's initial success let him hire musicians who would soon become stars in their own right including drummer Dave Tough, trumpeter Les Elgart, trombonist and arranger Nelson Riddle, and vocalists Garry Stevens and June Hutton, plus Irene Day who eventually became Mrs. Spivak. The band's popularity was also helped when Charlie switched to playing an open trumpet rather than always using a mute. The "cheery, chubby" sobriquet gave way to "the man who plays the sweetest trumpet" as he recorded hits such as Autumn Nocturne, Tenderly, Let's Go Home, Everything Happens to Me, My Devotion, and of course his theme Stardreams: It wasn't all dance music, though - he had a few up-tempo successes with Swingin' the Blues, Stompin' Room Only, and one of my favorites, the nonsense ditty Brother Bill. Charlie's talent arguably might have carried him to the same part of the stratosphere occupied by the other top bands had it not been for the double punches of the recording ban and constant personnel changes during the war. By the time everything settled down the Big Band Era was nearing its end. Whatever advice Glenn Miller gave served Charlie well. While other bands were breaking up, he managed to keep his orchestra together until the early 1960s, although he never achieved the fame he might have if his band had started a bit earlier. Illness forced him to give up performing for awhile. He resumed work with a quintet, but before long Charlie was once again in front of a full big band. What was supposed to be a temporary appearance at a supper club in Greenville, South Carolina turned into a decade-long revival of the Charlie Spivak Orchestra where he continued to play "the sweetest trumpet" until his passing in 1982. Erroll Garner – "Misty"
from The Palomar on November 27, 2009

Misty - Erroll Garner "Misty" written in 1954 by pianist Erroll Garner, has become one of the great jazz standards of the last century! It was originally composed as an instrumental piece following the traditional 32-bar format that was the standard for the period. In 1955 lyricist Johnny Burke, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s added lyrics to the piece which was to become the signature song of Johnny Mathis, reaching #12 on the U.S. Pop Singles chart in 1959. [1][2] Numerous artists have performed it at various times, perhaps most notably by Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan (1959), Billy Eckstine (1960), Frank Sinatra and Earl Grant (1961) and Lloyd Price (1963). Country music artist Ray Stevens (1975) took his turn with it and did it as a country song which became quite a hit for the novelty artist. Here is the Mathis version which he made famous:[1] Johnny Mathis The fabulous alto saxophonist, clarinetist, trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader Benny Carter also did a great rendition of Misty in 1995 for the Smithsonian Jazz Masters series for which I have included here: Benny Carter Erroll Garner's version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1991, with Mathis’ version being inducted in 2002. The song plays a key role in the plot of the movie “Play Misty for Me” (1971) starring Clint Eastwood. Universal Pictures paid $25,000 to use the song in the film.[1] I certainly hope you all enjoyed Benny’s version of Misty as much as I did!
