it just occured to me it's friday the 13th. did you know that? well when you did it just occurred to me i thought it must be the thirteenth. something's in the air. are you superstious? you know what i am. in what way? in terms of numbers. really. yes. i'm not going to tell you the number because then i'll get all these e-mails. minute thumbnail 11:16 am well numbers funny you should mention that are very germane to the movie we are going to be discussing today. it's this disaster movie. appropriate. exactly. it's roland emrich and if you are a fan of disaster movies you know him and you love him because he loves to blow things up he loves to have waves completely destroy civilizations and buildings disintegrate and objects flying into the camera well 2012 is another typical roland emrich movie. emrich already blew up most of washington dc in independence day and then he froze new york city to death in the day after tomorrow. what's left? the end of the world in 2012 or specifically december 21st, 2012 that is the date that is prophecied in the ancient mayan calendar to mark the end of the world and that is what roland emrich's movie is about. minute thumbnail 11:17 am dad look dad look! no no no no! it begins in 2009 when a severe storm appears on the surface of the sun promising earthquakes and tsunamis and other natural disasters around the earth. three years later in 2012 most of the world at least theeople who live in john cusack's world are going about their lives as if there's no danger at all but cusack is a science fiction writer and he figures out that the world is about to end. cusack is also a chauffeur and in one of the most exquistely catastrophe rich segments ever put down on film. cusack frantically rushes in his limo to pick up his children minute thumbnail 11:18 am and his ex-wife amanda peet and her boneheaded husband hoping to save them all by driving through the flood of disasters to safety meanwhile the president of the united states danny glover begins the process of saving humanity by putting wealthy humans and animals on huge ships to repopulate the earth. get it? it's a noah's ark for the new age and one of the most inventive parts of the movie because once the disasters begin the whole movie is a race against time and catastrophes as we follow various characters in their struggle to survive. emrich offers a few political opinions and takes a jab or two at religion but basically this is just one long disaster movie cliche. shut up everybody! engine start. minute thumbnail 11:19 am where's control? if you're intrigued by the idea of 2012 and the mayan calendar there's a phenomenal series on youtube that explores the possible science behind the predictions of doomsday. you can get it by typing in december 21st 2012 the end but if you just want more disasters check out the dvd of roland emrich's the day after tomorrow. right behind me that's a tornado yes a twister it is just massive this one begins just like 2012 a climatologist dennis quaid discovers that the polar ice minute thumbnail 11:20 am caps are melting but no one will listen to him what follows is the beginning of a new ice age but what makes this movie interesting is that you actually learn something about global warming that if the polar ice caps melt that fresh water will pour into the oceans causing the ocean temperatures to decrease by thirteen degrees. there is a wall of water coming toward new york city! everybody get out of here! not bad information to know i don't think either of these movies are cautionary tales. i think roland emrich just likes to make things go boom and there are plenty of audiences who want to watch him do it. yes i have to be in the mood for it. i know i know there's somethinabout i remember winston churchill said there's nothing in life more exhilarating than to be shot at without result. i think people the experience of watching it makes them feel better or something. i don't minute thumbnail 11:21 am know. i don't get it. i don't either. it looks interesting. yes very very well made for sure ok maybe i'll check it out. great to see you. we'll again see you next week. hope nothing happens to you today. i hope not too.
