Given the rise of knife and gun crime in London over the last two years the march that took place on Saturday 20 September was an inevitable response. In the weeks leading up to the march, the social networking site Facebook played its part as the central publicising site on the internet. A day before the march The London Lite had an article on the march in which it estimated that the turn-out would be in the region of 20,000. I felt this was an over-estimation. I live in North London. I arrived at Caledonian Park, Islington at 9.45 am. The North March was due to start at 10.30, so I arrived in plenty of time. The park had pockets of people strewn here and there. Some were sitting down, most were standing. Others were preparing placards, while a few were changing their T-shirts. The atmosphere was one of expectation, and while it might surprise some apathy. To be honest, those of us who go to marches regularly know that we dont expect to achieve much. We still go because we feel strongly about the situation that were marching about, and because we have hope. Hope! Yes, hope can unify people that have almost nothing in common and convince them that they can create change. Change, however, is just a buzzword these days. From the Obama campaign to the Peoples March protest, change is the goal that motivates action, fuelled by hope I guess. But how does one bring change to a world that is largely motivated by money? When the young, the middle-aged, and the old were chanting on the streets of Camden Town: Gordon Brown, can you hear us? were they really expecting Gordon Brown to hear them? And having heard them, given the Governments track record of ignoring its public, what did they expect Gordon Brown to do? Now, do not get me wrong. I am not knocking or criticising our intentions. I applaud our courageousness and the determination of the organisers, but somehow, I feel that we have not done our homework. It may surprise some of you when I write: crime makes moneyand improves the economy. Really? Yes. How? Basically, as Jean Paul Sartre once aptly put it in Colonialism & Neo-Colonialism: Everything within the system was designed to function for the maintenance of the system. Now while Sartre was talking specifically about European neo-colonial tactics in North Afrika, primarily Algeria, I think the analogy can work in order to explain our current plight in inner city London. Lets imagine that inner city London is a little colony of the British establishment. In this colony, you have the dispossessed, the refugees, the immigrants, the proletariats. Most of them are Black or non-European. The irony of capitalism is that in an economy that relies heavily on what Dr. Martin Luther King once described brilliantly as The interdependence of human existence in his sermon Rediscovering Lost Values, the non-white and subsequent poor who are looked down upon contribute heavily to the economy of this country. Black youths who commit crimes and who are paraded through our media every other day as a menace to society keep the police, the lawyers, the judges, the probation officers, and such like members of the criminal just-them! System in employment. Imagine if the youth stopped killing each other! How many people would be out of a job? Many, I venture to say. Milton Friedman, the money guru of the Western capitalist world, died a year ago. In a debate with University of Chicago students in the 1980s, he was asked by an Afrikan student: do you believe that greed is good? his immediate response was yes. Friedman went on to defend the European pillaging, raping and looting of Afrika. Friedmans attitude in the 80s exists in the minds and hearts of almost every leader of the capitalist 21st Century world. The economy is the most important thing to governments, not me, not you, not the killings of our youths. The sooner we understand this, the better. So when our young youths were chanting: Gordon Brown, can you hear us/what do we want? We want justice/when do we want it? We want it now, well, Gordon Brown can probably hear you, but he does not care. And as for justice, we will not be getting it any time soon. The people who are benefitting from taking away justice know that the moment they start administering real justice they will cease to benefit from the system. It is called the criminal JUST-US system for a reason.
