from RN Breakfast - separate stories on November 09, 2009

When was the last time you saw a koala in the wild? They're hard to spot mind you - but there's a real fear their numbers are in decline. And despite the efforts of the Australian Koala Foundation the species is not yet listed as endangered. The Threatened Species Steering Committee, meets in Canberra today and the Foundation claims that new scientific studies into the declining numbers of koalas make endangered species listing imperative.

CHEETAHS - Running Out of Time!

CHEETAHS - Running Out of Time!

from recent posts tagged man - blip.tv (beta) on October 08, 2009
Duration: 133
Cheetahs are the fastest land mammal! Capable of reaching speeds in excess of 70mph they are an amazing animal, unfortunately their numbers in the wild have dropped drastically in the past 100 years. Namibia is one of the last refuges of the remaining world Cheetah population. A quarter of all the remaining cats are found in Nambia. It is estimated their numbers globally have declined by over 90% in the last 100 years. A local thorn bush species is invading the savannah in the country, causing over US$90 million each year in lost revenue to Namibian farmers, whilst also destroying the native habitat of the fastest of the cats. Now the Cheetah Conservation Fund has pioneered a scheme to clear the thorn bush and turn it into cheap fuel briquettes. The project is creating jobs at the same time as helping to restore the hunting ground of the endangered cheetah. Vote for the Cheetah Conservation Fund "No Beating About The Bush" at: http://www.theworldchallenge.co.uk/vote.php Voting ends 13th November 2009, you can vote once per e-mail address - remember a vote for the CCF is a vote for the CHEETAH! Save Tigers & Bobcats!

Save Tigers & Bobcats!

!!!HELP SAVE THE TIGER & BOBCAT!!! The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, also known as CITES, is an international treaty designed to control and regulate international trade in certain animal and plant species that are now or potentially may be threatened with extinction. Currently, 175 countries, including the United States, are parties to CITES. The Convention calls for biennial meetings in which one of the functions is to consider amendments to the lists of species possibly threatened with extinction. We have a unique opportunity to provide public comments to 2 items related to big cats that the United States plans to submit for consideration. First, the US continues to support a strong stance on tiger conservation and efforts to address illegal trade in tiger and other Asian big cat parts and derivatives. Of course, Big Cat Rescue fully supports this position. Second, a proposal exists to remove Bobcats from the current list of protected species. BIG CAT RESCUE DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS POSITION. Please write a letter to our CITES representatives, and let them know that you support strong tiger conservation, but you insist that they keep the Bobcat under Appendix II Protection. Visit this page to use our sample letter: http://capwiz.com/bigcatrescue/issues/alert/?alertid=13810331&type=CU http://www.bigcatrescue.org/ We CAN make a difference!
