Herewith is my personal, arthouse summer school summary. Werner Herzog cast a disapproving eye on the ugliness he discovered at Antarctica's McMurdo Station ("they even have a yoga studio and an ATM!") and was skeptical about the sanity of some of the real-life characters he met, which is partly why Encounters at the End of the World was so entrancing. What I learned: Evidence for gay penguins is skimpy, but they have been known to have threesomes. The Wackness (pictured) didn't became the breakout hit that some had hoped for, but it did showcase the talents of rising star Olivia Thirlby and director Jonathan Levine. What I learned: Never kiss Ben Kingsley in a telephone booth. Nanette Burstein's filmmaking techniques were much more off-putting than her ultimately winning subjects in American Teen, another would-be smash that didn't live up to box office expectations. What I learned: Never break up with your girlfriend via text message, especially when a documentary filmmaker is interviewing her. Unexpectedly, Tell No One became the breakout limited-release mystery thrill ride of the summer, and Man on Wire proved that impassioned high wire walkers can make dreams come true and enthrall audiences to boot. Directed by Canadian indie veteran Patricia Rozema (I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, When Night is Falling), Kit Kittredge has clearly benefited from a devoted fan base that convinced thousands of their parental units to fork over $20 per ticket -- which, to be fair, includes a limited-edition t-shirt -- to see the movie in advance of its wide release tomorrow. That's a very good performance when you consider its main competition was not, actually, a French-language flick that skewed very adult, but actually a heavily-advertised animated film. Spoken in Herzog's familiar rich, ironic drone, the line gets a big laugh, but it also brings up a good point. Does the inclusion of Herzog's personal interests make this a better movie than March of the Penguins? And, ultimately, what do we really expect from a documentary? Let's look at these questions a little later, and get back to Herzog's film, which starts in Antarctica. Actually, it started a couple of years ago when Herzog incorporated some astonishing, underwater footage into his all-but-unreleased film The Wild Blue Yonder (2005). A photographer friend dove under the Antarctic ice to shoot images of the unbelievable creatures, shapes and displays of light that could only be seen there, and Herzog used the footage in his film to represent life on another planet (!). But the pictures apparently continued to fascinate him, and so he journeyed to the earth's southernmost point to learn more. Jeff Peckman is an American ufologist that gained media attention in 2008 and showed in Denver, Colorado a video of a urportedly living, breathing space alien. Sunday March 2nd, 2008 Whitley Update Joining the show for the second-half of the first hour, author Whitley Strieber shared his account of how his friend Dr. John Lerma removed an 'alien' implant from his ear. He also talked about his newest journal entry about disclosure. Pre-Death Encounters Known for his compassionate care of hundreds of terminally-ill patients, Dr. John Lerma presented his research into hospice patients' pre-death experiences. Such patients shared similarities in their experiences, typically seeing a "light entity" or human-appearing spirit being about four weeks before their passing. Subsequently, the being appears to them with increasing frequency, preparing them for their death, and reviewing life lessons, he recounted. A PET scan of a patient undergoing a brief "hallucinatory" episode showed that many different areas of their brain were lit up, Lerma reported. He told of working with Matthew, a blind nine-year-old with a terminal illness. Matthew described communing with three different angels who were so tall, it was as though they were from another dimension. One of Dr. Lerma's patients was a man who was a friend of rancher Mac Brazel of Roswell fame. In a sort of deathbed confession to Lerma, he said Brazel showed him the crash debris in 1947 and in it, he saw a swastika, which suggested that one of the crashed discs was designed by German scientists, imported to the US after the war. The scientists had supposedly picked up the technology from ETs, and used it earlier to build 'foo fighters.' Lerma also described attempting to surgically remove an 'alien implant' from Whitley Strieber's ear. The object moved away from the tweezers, and was difficult to extract in its entirety. A part that was removed was studied by pathologists and determined to be a non-natural cellulose structure.
