'Pirate Radio' Salutes Rebel Rock Broadcasters

Filed under: News, Movies While the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks and the Who may have all ruled US airwaves in the '60s, the UK played only an hour or two of rock 'n' roll on the radio each day. Some radio DJs rebelled against the government and broadcasted from boats just off the UK territorial waters, and a new film sheds light on one of these renegade stations. Robert Curtis -- writer and director of 'Love Actually' and screenwriter of 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and 'Notting Hill' -- dug deep into his childhood and wrote and directed his new comedy, 'Pirate Radio.' The film follows an eclectic group of rock DJs who broadcast live 24/7 from an old tanker that's been anchored in the North Sea and fight to stay on the air despite the British government's plans to shut them down.

Keira Knightley Officially 'My Fair Lady' for Joe Wright

Last summer, it was reported that Columbia was setting up a remake of My Fair Lady and that Keira Knightley was pursuing the iconic, Cockney role of Eliza Doolittle. While Knightley has been "attached" ever since, The Telegraph reports that Scarlett Johansson was also vying for the role. But Knightley won out, and the Telegraph not only confirms that she's got the role, but that Joe Wright will be directing. Emma Thompson is writing the script. Knightley has been taking singing lessons ever since the possibility came up (and I actually think she proved she had a good voice in The Edge of Love), and I think she'll be absolutely charming as Doolittle. But then I'm biased towards her. Even if you aren't (and I expect many "too skinny!" comments), I think the combination of Wright and Thompson pushes this into very, very promising territory. Thompson can do no wrong by me. What will really tip the balance is who they cast as the grumpy, misogynist Professor Henry Higgins. The Telegraph reports that Daniel Craig is being considered, and he'd certainly be ideal as the grim Higgins, probably moreso than the dapper Hugh Jackman. I wouldn't mind seeing Patrick Wilson become a contender, and I half wonder if Gerard Butler's vocal chords were trotted out on Saturday Night Live as an audition. Just you wait, and practice your R's, and we'll see whose face Knightley must become accustomed to. This week we hark back to the days when life was so much more simple! Nobody wanted to concrete over War graves, and desecrate historic churches, the lives of thousands of simple English folk were not in danger from multinationals, hell bent on profit and the Good Life was on our television screens, poking simple sweet fun at hippies! Yes, PTV has an exclusive interview this week with Richard Briars, the great thespian and star of The Good Life! PTV Went to a tiny little village ideally situated, in what used to be known as "The Breadbasket of London" now better known as "A right pain in the Arse" to the people who want to bulldoze it and put in a CRAZY and UNESSECARY third runway at Heathrow! Greenpeace, with the help of such luminaries as Zac Goldsmith and Emma Thompson, purchased and set up the "Airplot", and idyllic site, which was being planted out as we filmed. There are thousands of owners, each who will have to agree to sell, before the runway can be built!!! (We hear it on the Grapevine that the Tories will "scotch" the runway anyway when/if they get into power! Let's hope that's true!) Later on in the program we visit ECOBUILD and FUTUREBUILD 2009 at Earls Court. There is quite literally NOTHING else to be discovered about ecobuilding, after you've been to this tremendous show! I personally loved the Hempcrete! (Hemp concrete!) I almost bought an ecohouse from Zed factory too, but I couldn't convince VISA to put the 65,000 quid on my card that was required!

Peter Sarsgaard is one of the most interesting actors I've ever interviewed. He isn't afraid to tackle interesting roles or stear away from controversial topics. I spoke with him recently about his part in the terrific new movie, "An Education." We spoke about his undertaking as a much older man who dates a 17 year old girl. For the record, I have no problems with large age differences, once a person is out of high school and has a few years of college, work and dating experience behind them. "An Education" has received the Critics Choice Seal from the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
