GM Didn’t Kill It: The Future of the Electric Car
from Chris Pirillo June 21, 2008
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Back around 1997, General Motors introduced the EV1. The EV1 was a marvel of engineering, absolutely the best electric vehicle anyone had ever seen. It held out the promise that soon electric cars, charged from the grid with wind and solar energy could replace the traditional internal-combustion vehicle. Battery technology at the time was nowhere near ready to replace the piston-powered engine. The early car s lead-acid batteries couldn t supply the range or durability required by the mass market. The car itself was a tiny, super-light two-seater, not exactly what American consumers were looking for. And the EV1 was hugely expensive to build, which was why GM s execs terminated the program. This is how they became known as the company that killed the electric car. Fast-forward to summer of 2008. GM has unveiled the very real Chevy Volt, a Lithium Ion powered car. Mike Davidson of Newsvine asked Bob Lutz if GM is looking at various ways to recharge the new Volt batteries. With ever-increasing electricity costs, even homes are being built with more solar-powered capabilities to save people money. How then, will the Volt be able to save money and power? Bob was quick to assuage fears in this capacity. The Volt may be programmed with a local schedule of when power is cheapest. The car s computer would know that, thereby only charging the car during off-peak times and costs. It wouldn t matter if you leave your car plugged in all day long. The car would only charge itself during those cheaper times. Lutz also stated that during the first full year of production in 2011, they are realistically planning to manufacture about 10,000 Volts. In the next year, they ll be up to 60,000. Demand will obviously drive how much manufacturing is done. Of course, you always have to worry about any production problems. You could have supply problems. Bob has also stated that the pricing for the Volt is going to be around $40,000.00. Even with such a high price tag, the demand is extremely high. People are chomping at the bit wanting this car. Another question raised dealt with service for the Volts at local dealerships once they hit the market. Will staff be trained properly to work on these completely different cars? Will the quality of the Volt s be maintained in a way that leads to a happy customer experience? Unfortunately, GM only has a modest amount of control at the retail level. They cannot force a dealership to train their employees for anything specific. They have tried, and failed, in the past to create a standardized method of training and customer service. The dealers have ultimate control over what goes on in their company. Bob pointed out that this is an industry-wide problem, though, not specific to GM. GM didn t kill the future of the electric car. They just put it off a little bit. The Car Community Interviews: Bob Lutz of General Motors
from Chris Pirillo June 21, 2008
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Robert Lutz is the Vice Chairman of Global Product Development with General Motors. Last week, the GM Board approved the Chevrolet Volt program. The Volt is a plug-in series hybrid electric vehicle by General Motors. Bob recently sat down to discuss the Volt, and many other things related to the future of automobiles and GM in general. From General Motors: The extended-range electric vehicle is no longer just a rumor. We have put tremendous design and engineering resources in place to make this vehicle a reality. The Concept Chevy Volt, with its revolutionary E-Flex Propulsion System will be different than any previous electric vehicle because it will use a lithium-ion battery with a variety of range-extending onboard power sources, including gas and, in some vehicles, E85 ethanol to recharge the battery while driving. When it comes to plugging in, the Volt will be designed to use a common 110–volt household plug. For someone who drives less than 40 miles a day, Chevy Volt will use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions. For longer trips, Chevy Volt s range-extending power source kicks in to recharge the lithium-ion battery pack as required. We expect a driving range of an estimated 640 miles. Can you imagine the day when you no longer have to fill your tank every couple of days just to get to work and back? That day, according to GM, is not so far in the future. Unlike most available hybrids, the Volt will be able to run on electricity alone for up to 40 miles. When you drive further than that, a gas motor will kick in and generate power to keep that electric motor running. The current hybrid cars from both Toyota and Honda use electric motors to supplement the gas engines. Therefore, even a short trip burns gas going uphill, or at high speeds. GM says that approximately 78 percent of all US commuters drive less than 40 miles in an average day. Bob Lutz says that the Volt will be able to cover those miles on electricity alone, if it has been fully charged for six hours using a normal electrical outlet. Venturi Eclectic
from Danny's Contentment December 11, 2007
While I'm waiting to test drive the Venturi Fetish (could be a long wait...) I thought I'd show some footage of the Eclectic. Powered by solar panels on the roof, it'll run for 31 miles on a full charge with speeds of up to 32mph. If you live where I live you can even plug it in to the mains during downpours. It'll be released in June 2008, when 200 units will be released. Prices are expected to be around 24000 Euros. Thanks to Venturi for the footage. Click on the image to view video (6.9 meg QT). Kewet Buddy EV
from Danny's Contentment November 19, 2007
Had the good fortune to drive a Kewet Buddy last week. It's a nice little car and better than I expected it to be. I shot this footage on my Nokia N95 phone as a trial. It came out fine, but I've since found the wobblycam setting. I'll break the footage into episodes for all to see. Click on the image to view video. Think
from Danny's Contentment September 26, 2007
A think got me thinking (sorry..) yesterday about the new model that's coming to our shores in the near future. Looks like it'll be a great little car but there's a question mark over charge times. With a Wiz you can do an 80% battery charge in 2 hours - something we often need to do. I'm not sure the new Think will have this facility. Click on the image to view video (3.5 meg QT). Real Goods: We Took a Workshop at The Solar Living Institute
from Ryan Is Hungry July 06, 2007
Flash | QuickTime | iPod The Solar Living Institute, home of Real Goods (one of the first Green Catalogs), is like a big, green playground. The 12 acre plot was developed as a demonstration site for renewable and clean technologies like solar and wind power, green building and permaculture. We were excited to be able to spend some time on the campus while participating in a workshop on how to build an electric vehicle. Although the workshop turned out to be a wee bit overwhelming, we felt we got a pretty good primer into the world of electric vehicles. That said, we encourage y all to take a workshop or class on some of these green ideas. Meeting people and gathering resources for getting started on this stuff is a good motivator for really making change. Runtime- 4:25 Other DIY Green Videos:

The Tesla (Part 1)
from Danny's Contentment March 28, 2007
Thanks to autoblog green I had a tip off that the Tesla was going to be on show for a limited number of hours today at the green wheels motorshow in Norwich, where the car is built. The show has been organised by Cred and carbon connections, very useful departments of the University of East Anglia. Time to take the afternoon off and leg it up to Norwich. I got a really good chance to cover the car extensively, and meet the people behind it. I'll be posting episodic clips so that my bandwidth doesn't go too mental and I can show plenty of detail. Why can't I get a Smart EV?
from Danny's Contentment December 17, 2006
In terms of range and top speed (70 miles and 70 miles per hour) the Smart EV blows everything else away. They will become available in January on lease here in London, but only to a very select few businesses. Regular Smarts are all over this city - I cant believe the EV wouldn't be a roaring success (particularly with better infrastructure but people are working on that - slowly). I met a man from Cenex recently who's getting 5 in January. Cenex has been 'set up with the aim of assisting UK industry to build competitive advantage from the global shift to a low carbon economy'. Seeing as Smart are the first mainstream manufacturer to promote an EV here it would be great to see them on the roads, so why cant we buy one?
