In the studio, Oxford University lecturer Chris Bickerton, discusses the nature of the EU and the Lisbon Treaty. Having apparently got it wrong and voted no to the treaty the first time the Irish were asked to vote again. Chris explains this is how the EU operates. But with Japan facing huge external debt, record unemployment and a public service resistant to change, change activists will need guile and strategy as well as the numbers in parliament to make an impact.

STRATFOR : http://www.stratfor.com : As the Japanese prepare to vote in a general election this week, unemployment in their country has risen to 5.7 percent the highest in Japan since records began. And unless the opinion polls have got it badly wrong, a party that has never governed the Democratic Party of Japan will win. This will bring to an end the rule of the Liberal Democratic Party, a political machine that has been out of power for only 11 months since the restoration of democracy after the Second World War.

The British Ambassador to Afghanistan, Mark Sedwill, has been speaking on the upcoming Afghan national elections; via a special video link from Kabul to London, Mr.Sedwill said the elections indicated that the democratic culture is putting down strong roots.
