Santacon aka Santarchy, a jolly rampage of hundreds maybe thousands of Santas, is an annual tradition that occurs in cities all across the globe. Nowhere is it more diverse and well attended than in San Francisco, where the tradition started some 15 years ago when the Cacophony Society decided that Christmas should have a more noble purpose than buying Klassic Kringle route where Santa runs into bewildered tourists, reindeer dogs and groups of festive bards. A container ship hit the San Francisco Bay Bridge and released 58,000 gallons of crude bunker oil into the bay last week. I took a walk along Ocean Beach, which is on the Pacific Ocean side of San Francisco, to see if I could find anything amiss. If anyone knows why the jelly fish are washing up, I'd love to hear about it.

I recently took a visit to Santa Cruz with my friend Lindsay and we rode the super rickety Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster. Santa Cruz is the only US west coast city to still have a boardwalk with amusement park rides.
