Great White Egret..a seabird visits inland California

A bright early summer sun and a strong north wind blow the long plumes of this Great Egret standing on a rock made of the world famous Stony Creek pink granite.

In the quiet early morning the incoming tide eventually submerges the rock this large white heron is standing on.

When looking for fish the Great Egret is leaning forward with its long neck fully extended. They re here everyday now as this spot gets discovered as the place to catch fish.

Today,like the last three days has been cold and cloudy. Kim is away,taking his family back to school after a week here. After working in the office all morning, I escaped into the bush after lunch. As I drove, it began drizzling and I didnt hold much hope for the afternoons game viewing. Banyini yielded this zebra and his family, munching quietly on their lunch. There was a lot of elephant sign at the pan and they seemed to have headed east. As I made way in that direction, I heard a radio report that the elephant were on Orphan Road. It didn t take long for me to get over there. A small bunch were digging in to some strychnos fruits (monkey oranges). They crunched the hard fruits loudly and with relish. I spent half an hour or so with them until the drizzle increased and the light dropped too. Early in the morning is feeding time for the Great Egret. Not seeing any fish here this one flies off to another spot.

The Great White Egret looks like it's displaying but is actually hunting small fish and frogs that are attacked with its sharp yellow bill.
