2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman Full Test2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman Full Test

July 24, 2008

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=125063 --- It's Hour 9 of our big driving day in the big Mini, the 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman, and daylight is fading. Weekend wine enthusiasts escaping to Paso Robles jam us up on California Highway 46, but this Mini Clubman has the optional automatic transmission, so we relax. Eventually we come to the turnoff for California Highway 41, and none of the civilians are going with us. We've never driven the southernmost stretch of Highway 41 before. But with the Cooper S Clubman's responsive chassis and useful bi-xenons, it's point-and-shoot through the tight turns and we brim with confidence. Instead of holding us up, the six-speed Aisin-built automatic is playing along. It swaps gears as quickly as any dual-clutch gearbox and even matches revs when we call for a downshift. Sometimes we ask for a double and still it quickly obliges. The 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman doesn't feel any different than it did when the sun was out. Certainly, it's not any less fun. But we realize there's something to this stretched Mini's 3.2-inch-longer wheelbase and 200 extra pounds. And it's not just extra room. It's extra comfort. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=125009 --- What's the best car? It's a question that often comes up in casual conversation with people we've just met. Normally, we'll respond with something along the lines of, It depends on what you use your car for. But the question had us thinking. What is the best choice for most people? You know, a typical family doing typical things like home improvement projects, picking up relatives and all their holiday gear at the airport, transporting the kids to kung-fu class.... Once we ruled out off-roading and towing as specialized activities, we settled on a framework. The vehicle had to accommodate at least seven typical adults and still fit in a normal garage. This still didn't narrow the field much, as you can find dozens of full-size SUVs, crossovers and minivans that all fit the bill. So here we have assembled the best and most sizable examples of their respective classes of full-size SUV, crossover and minivan to determine if bigger is better, or if crossing over truly hits the sweet spot, or if the lowly minivan has enough capability. Among full-size SUVs, we settled on a 2008 Toyota Sequoia SR5 4x4 packing $5,545 in options including navigation, a towing package, parking sonar, power-adjustable driver seat, running boards, cold-weather package, cargo mats and a roof rack. Total bill: $43,605. GM's Lambda crossovers have quickly made a name for themselves as front-runners among crossovers, and so we threw into the mix a 2008 GMC Acadia SLT-2 AWD equipped with goodies totaling $3,165. A panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels, a towing package, fancy paint and a head-up instrument display bring the Acadia's total to $42,180...Author: InsideLineVideo Tags: 2008 Toyota Sequoia GMC Acadia SLT-2 Honda Odyssey Touring Crossover Minivan SUV Comparison Edmunds Insideline Automotive Car Posted: 25 July 2008 Rating: 0.0 Votes: 0

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/dc/Search?q=gt-r+road+trip+pt.+1 Here's the deal. There are only seven U.S.-spec GT-Rs on American soil and we're taking one on the road. We've got a new gas credit card, a white 2009 Nissan GT-R and three days to cover as many miles as we can. Nissan made us agree to just two rules. 1) The Edmunds' Inside Line office in Santa Monica, California is the starting line. 2) The car makes it to Reno, Nevada in one piece. But here's the question. Where should we go? Help us plan our route. We can drive the GT-R anywhere we want. Should we hit a racetrack? Route 66? Your house? Help us out here. Where would you take somebody else's GT-R? Then tune back to this blog space on Wednesday March 26th and tag along for the ride. We'll be blogging from the road, complete with photos and video. It'll be like you're riding along with us in the year's hottest car. The adventure will last three days. We also promised Nissan the car would be returned to its engineers early the morning of Saturday March 29th. So tell your friends and bookmark this page. We'll update it over the next week and a half as our route takes shape. July 24, 2008

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=125350 --- There will be no Camaro vs. Mustang death match this week due to a distinct lack of Camaro, so can we interest you instead in a muscle-car comparison test? Here we have two classic nameplates, each with a 400-horsepower V8 stuffed into a smallish four-door body shell and powering only the rear wheels. Naturally we're referring to those two paragons of modern muscle, the 2008 BMW M3 Sedan and the 2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Don't be confused by the German nameplates, the aura of high-tech engineering and the rarefied price tags. The 2008 BMW M3 Sedan and 2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG match up as naturally as any muscle cars on Woodward Avenue during the 1960s. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=125334 --- Everything you need to know about the 2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is made clear the instant you prod its 451-horsepower V8 engine to life. When the 6.2-liter beast lights off, the engine revs spike in a programmed look at me blip before the Merc's idle settles into a deep, throaty burble. Cue the goose bumps. We haven't yet released the brake or slotted the shift lever into gear, and we're already trying to figure out an angle to finance one of these muscle-bound sport sedans, all $54,625 of it. But we have to wonder if the 2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG — essentially a hot-rod C-Class sedan — can possibly deliver the goods in direct proportion to this testosterone-infused exhaust note. There's only one way to find out. Our first full test of the $53,000, all-wheel-drive 2008 Audi S5 was a bit of a revelation. With a 354-horsepower version of Audi's direct-injection 4.2-liter V8 under its hood, the voluptuous Audi S5 ran a 13.3-second quarter-mile at 104 mph, just 0.1 second and 2 mph shy of the 420-hp 2007 Audi RS4 sedan. What's more, the S5's slalom speed is within a couple mph of the harsh-riding RS-spec sedan. It ran a 13.3? With that kind of speed, who needs a $67,000 RS4? we asked ourselves. So naturally, the first thing I want to do when I jump behind the wheel is a big American smoky burnout. "Not here," says Pete Gladysz, the Dodge guy babysitting our test car and riding shotgun, as he looks around the leafy, tranquil residential street we're on in the middle of Pasadena. "Wait 'till we get to the track." Gladysz, powertrain senior manager for Chrysler LLC's SRT Group, sounds serious. So I wait.

The only certainty of its future is that it is uncertain. Now forget about all that. Turn your attention to the product, which is ultimately the most critical aspect of an automaker's success. Here we have the 2009 Jaguar XF Supercharged, purportedly ready to do battle with the big German sedans like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, cars that know the luxury sedan game. Only time will tell the story of Jaguar as it enters the next phase of its existence, but we can peek a few pages forward simply by testing the fruits of its labor.

July 08, 2008

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=125908 --- It's not until late in our cross-country test bash that the defining differences between the 2008 BMW 135i, 2008 BMW 335i and our long-term 2002 BMW M3 become crucial. We're vectoring along California State Highway 190 approaching Death Valley and climbing to the 4,963-foot summit of Towne Pass, and then the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engines of these 1 Series and 3 Series BMWs begin to carve out a decided advantage over the normally aspirated mill of the brilliant but aging M3. The less frenetic acceleration of the current-generation cars becomes their most profound strength on this long, steep climb above 3,000 feet. Fewer gearshifts, more accessible power and a less demanding load on the driver are good when ripping across straight sections of desert road at barely sub-mach velocity. But only a few hundred miles back, where the road was smooth and winding and the air was far denser, the M3 had been in its element. The question, then, is which is the better machine? To find out, we drove these three cars on back roads and byways. We headed to the hills and to the desert and then on to the track — the 1.5-mile, 10-turn Radical Loop at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada, to be exact. In between, we hit our usual test facility to gather standardized data for acceleration, braking and handling. We also ran the 2002 BMW M3, 2008 BMW 135i and 2008 BMW 335i through our 28-point testing evaluation, quizzed each participating editor about his personal favorite and weighed the features of each carefully to determine a victor. May the best BMW win.

July 08, 2008

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=125968 --- The rebirth of the American muscle car is about a lot more than retro. It's about pride. It's about recalling a time when Americans looked down the road to the future with confidence, and they wanted a great big V8 engine to get them there as soon as possible. It's no wonder the 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt has our respect. It's the best version yet of the 2005 Ford Mustang, the car that set Detroit on fire again with enthusiasm for good old American muscle. Maybe the fuel-guzzling muscle car won't save Detroit from the challenge to build cars that people need, but it's surely restored the domestic car industry's confidence in its ability to do so. And it's shown that Americans can build cars that are utterly unlike anything you'll find in Stuttgart, Shanghai, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur or any of those other places that economists think they're so clever to know about. Now that the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is here, Chrysler is cracking the seal on its own Mopar-branded can of muscle-car whoop-ass to show that it understands what's at stake in the muscle-car sweepstakes. The Bullitt and the Challenger are the two coolest cars in America, and it's only natural to bring them together.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=125571 --- GT-R. GT-R. GT-R. It's all anybody can talk about. "Hi, Mom. What's for dinner?" "The 2009 Nissan GT-R." "Who's going to win the Democratic presidential nomination?" "The 2009 Nissan GT-R." "What's the land speed of the cheetah?" "The 2009 Nissan GT-R." "Where do babies come from?" "The 2009 Nissan GT-R." And to perpetuate the discussion, we took a white 2009 Nissan GT-R on the ultimate road trip. In three days we drove that GT-R 2,000 miles across three states, with stops at one drag strip, one racetrack and one dry lake. It was the trip of a lifetime. The world's newest supercar, flat out across the American West. Did we speed? Well, to quote the great Dan Gurney after his famous drive in the 1971 Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, "At no time did we exceed 175 mph." The best part? We took pictures and video of the entire trip. Enjoy the ride.

LEARN MORE ABOUT TOYOTA HYBRIDS: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=127826 Guy walks into a Toyota dealer — sounds like a joke so far, right? Not quite. Guy walks into a Toyota dealer looking for a 2008 Toyota Prius. He's heard about hybrids for awhile now, and the Prius is one he knows by name. He vaguely recalls some celebrity bragging about taking one to the Academy Awards instead of a limo, and then there was that South Park episode, Smug Alert a couple of years back. And didn't Al Gore's own son make headlines for getting busted doing 100 mph in his Prius? Something like that. Beyond the hype, Guy's never really given hybrid cars much thought, much less gone looking for one. And even though he can afford a decent-size car or SUV, the price of gasoline has him looking for fuel economy in a serious way. And there on the showroom floor, Guy sees a 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid for almost the same amount of money as a Prius. Now what?

Catch that Rabbit: 2010 Volkswagen Rabbit Spy VideoCatch that Rabbit: 2010 Volkswagen Rabbit Spy Video

June 27, 2008

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=122976 For awhile there, Volkswagen was quite the popular brand in the U.S. It had cool commercials that pitched cool cars, and it could charge premium prices to go along with its premium image. But somewhere along the way, Volkswagen started losing money, lots of money. Mostly it was spending too much building even its cheapest cars. It's just one of the many reasons why the 2010 Volkswagen Rabbit you see here is getting a redesign. Judging by the test mules spotted in Death Valley, California, the next-generation Rabbit is getting only minor cosmetic changes. Heavy camouflage obscures tweaks to the front clip, and even the new rear end shows only modest alterations. It appears as though these prototypes might be nothing more than current Rabbits, but with new front and rear sheet metal tacked on, so details like the size of the doors and the overall shape of the greenhouse could be misleading. Most of the changes to this new Rabbit have come late in the game, as Volkswagen chief Martin Winterkorn ordered a restyle after seeing the previous design. This suggests that the changes will be more drastic than the test mules seen here, so don't look too much into the black plastic panels. With cost reduction as its primary focus, Volkswagen will be looking for ways to streamline the build process. This could mean continued use of the 2.5-liter five-cylinder in the U.S., although more modern four-cylinder engines could replace it to improve fuel mileage and reduce emissions. If the 2009 Jetta TDI proves successful, look for the Rabbit to add diesel power to the options list as well. The 2010 Volkswagen Rabbit was expected to debut in Europe early next year as the 2009 Golf, but the last-minute design changes have pushed its introduction to mid-to-late 2008. This means a 2009 introduction for the U.S. market at the earliest, a situation that isn't going to make Volkswagen any cooler any time soon. June 24, 2008

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=126454 After mediocre success with its midsize SRX crossover, Cadillac is refocusing its efforts on the growing compact SUV segment. The 2010 Cadillac BRX, or CTX as it may be called, is a smaller two-row SUV built on a modified version of GM's midsize sedan platform. Caught testing in suburban Detroit, the Cadillac BRX looks as though it will borrow most of its design cues from the Provoq concept shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. The chevron-shaped grille remains largely intact and the overall shape of the greenhouse hasn't changed. With so much camouflage over the rear end it's impossible to tell if the production version of the Cadillac BRX will get the retro tail fin lights in back like the concept; but chances are good. One element of the concept that's guaranteed not to show up is the Provoq's hydrogen fuel-cell drivetrain. In its place will be a couple of gas-burning V6s and traditional automatic transmissions. They'll send power to the front wheels most of the time, with some power sent to the rear wheels on all-wheel-drive models. Entry-level models will most likely come with the 2.8-liter V6 currently used as the base power plant in the European CTS sedan. With only 210 horsepower, the 2.8-liter V6 looks more like a nod to fuel economy above all else. For those who can afford the extra gas, a 3.6-liter V6 will be offered as well. It should deliver closer to 300 hp and use a six-speed automatic transmission. By the time the 2010 Cadillac BRX goes on sale next year, it will have a formidable list of competitors. Similar compact luxury SUVs like the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class will all be competing for the same buyers. Cadillac needs to deliver more than just a more fuel-efficient SUV; it needs to have standout styling as well. Look for the introduction of the final production BRX at next year's Detroit auto show. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/FVDP/Preview/styleId=100857691 Although covered in plastic from nose to tail, our latest spy shots give the best look yet at the 2010 BMW 7 Series. Caught during testing on the streets of Munich, the 2010 7 Series looks as though it will maintain a size similar to the current model while cleaning up some of its controversial styling. Expected to start production in 2009, the 2010 7 Series will ride on a new platform with an internal designation of F01. In order to increase passenger space without adding more bulk, the new sedan will get a longer wheelbase without adding any significant length. An even bigger "L" version dubbed F02 will be offered that adds an additional 5.5 inches of length. Slight bulges around the rear wheels of this prototype also suggest a slightly wider track. Most of the styling changes will be evolutionary as this prototype shows an overall shape very similar to the current model. Up front, the twin-kidney grille looks as though it will be slightly larger while the slimmer headlights will be pushed farther to each side. The distinctive trunk design pioneered on the 2002 7 Series appears intact. We expect to see a new taillight design that will further reduce this 7's bulky rear end, but anyone hoping for a wholesale redesign will be disappointed. Like the current 7 Series, there will be the usual range of V8 and V12 engines. The real news for this 7 Series, however, will be its alternative-fuel options. Given BMW's participation in a hybrid development program with DaimlerChrysler and General Motors, it's a good bet that the 2010 7 Series will offer the option of a gas-electric drivetrain similar to the one planned for the 2009 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. By 2009, BMW may also have a diesel engine capable of meeting U.S. emission standards so that could be part of the package as well. With production slated to begin in 2009, the 2010 BMW 7 Series should be headed for U.S. dealers by the spring of 2009. We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Smart Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter TDI diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota Prius.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=126103 For a few seconds, you give in to the spectacle of driving a 2009 Nissan GT-R. This car attracts its own entourage and then takes you along for the ride. It's not just the Skyline mystique, either. It's the fact that even in production sheet metal, the R35 GT-R looks like a one-off concept stolen from a Southern California design studio. It has as many hard contours as a Porsche 911 has soft curves. You have the key fob, and still you ogle it. Soon, though, you point the GT-R down an on-ramp and plant the throttle. The effortless brutality with which the 2009 Nissan GT-R gathers speed is what you'll describe to your friends — once everyone's tired of talking about the styling, that is. What you won't tell them is that you suspect your supercar might be a sociopath. It doesn't flow around corners like your E46 BMW M3 did, nor does it transmit feedback through the steering wheel for the sheer pleasure of it. Instead, the 2009 Nissan GT-R bends asphalt to its will. When it talks to you about tire grip, you get the feeling it's only bothering because you're part of its great plan to break free of the Earth's orbit. Should it ever achieve this, you imagine that its conversation will cease and it will simply expel you into the airless void. Until then, though, you have the conn.

What's more, the S5's slalom speed is within a couple mph of the harsh-riding RS-spec sedan. It ran a 13.3? With that kind of speed, who needs a $67,000 RS4? we asked ourselves. We believe so strongly in the 2008 Audi S5 that it earned our Inside Line's inaugural Editors' Choice Award. So we acquired (hastily perhaps) another 2008 Audi S5 and set it against the new 2008 BMW M3 Coupe, a car now fortified with V8 power for the first time. Speed-reading the specifications sheets of these two cars, they seem like natural rivals: the 354-hp, all-wheel-drive 2008 Audi S5 measured against the 414-hp, rear-wheel-drive 2008 BMW M3. But as it turns out, we gave the 2008 Audi S5 a bigger challenge than we had initially intended.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=125571 It's been a long time coming, but there's a white 2009 Nissan GT-R in the Inside Line Garage (we photographed it with our Ferrari to prove it). In fact, the keys are in my pocket as I type this. Forgive me if this is a short blog post, I'm itching to get on the road. Here's the deal. The car is a PT2 unit, as in pre-production. And it's right off of Nissan's Arizona proving grounds. Nissan engineer Bruce Robinson drove it west from that facility yesterday. According to him the car runs great but has a tendency to drool a little fuel down the side of the car when you fill it up. He also said we should invest in a case of octane booster. We recommend 93, but it'll run on 91, he said. I'd stop and get a few bottles. And we will. We officially leave Los Angeles for the Inside Line Ultimate GT-R Road Trip early tomorrow morning, so check back and follow along as we drive this all-wheel drive supercar 3,000 miles in three days. First day's destination? Well, we plan on hitting the El Mirage drylake for some top end runs. Then we'll turn north and find our way to Sacramento Dragway for a Wednesday night of grudge match drag racing. We hope to get there about 5 pm. If you live in the area of the California capital city come on out. We'll even let you sit in the car while you tell us how much you love Inside Line. If you can't make it, keep checking this page for blogs, photos and video of our adventure. Scott Oldham, Inside Line Editor in Chief

Competing is important to gain experience. This fight is an arranged "Hard Sparring" season. Fights like these give fighters the opportunity to compete, gaining experience without worrying about their professional fight records. Fighters are wearing "shooto"-style sparring gloves, shin pads, groin and a mouth protector. These fights were held in Phuket Thailand, at the Tiger Muay Thai training facility. TMT can arrange smoker fights in Muay Thai, MMA, Grappling, and Boxing. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/geneva/2008/index.html As the first international auto show of the year, the 2008 Geneva Auto Show is guaranteed to feature plenty of notable world debuts. And it's not just the latest from BMW and Mercedes either, as the Geneva auto show is known for its showcase of international designers who bring their latest concept cars to gauge public reaction. The legendary Pininfarina design house will unveil its Sintesi concept, a car it says combines "sportiness and functionality." On the manufacturer side, we'll see the world debuts of the 2008 BMW M3 Convertible and Ford Fiesta world car. The refreshed Mercedes-Benz SL will also make its world debut, along with the Rolls-Royce Phantom coupe. A new Mitsubishi Prototype S concept is also expected, as well as the 2009 Volvo XC60. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=124845 In the United States, boxy compacts are still a left-of-center novelty. People buy the Scion xB and Honda Element for their space-efficiency, versatility and neo-Bauhaus design. And they certainly don't mind the kind of gas mileage that's made possible by thrifty four-cylinder engines. While sales of such cars are modest (about 60,000 Scion xBs were sold in 2006, for example), the xB in particular is a draw for young buyers, who are worth their weight in iPods.
