ROCKOLLECTIONS: ‘ERMAN’S ‘ERMITS PT.2 END
from WLSO.FM June 21, 2008
Like all the British bands, Herman s Hermits were no exception when it came to doing good old American Rock s. The next one I call the CPR song. After that they had a big hit over here with a tune that was written and originally done by my man Ray Davies, with the Kinks. I ll be telling you how they happened to get the name Herman (in this case, something misheard). Another Yank song by them, this one originally done by the great Sam Cooke. Peter Noone left the group in 1971, and since has appeared on numerous sitcoms and dramas- and we ll even throw in a mid 70 s hit he had solo. Then I will go out with a flurry of songs to make your memory bank dizzy and will shave decades off your chronological age. And ala Ed Sullivan, I will make you wait till the end to hear my favorite Herman s Hermits song- and the first one we ever heard here in this country back in 1964. All in all, a nice way to spend the first day of Summer on a Saturday afternoon! Mike

The Beatles - Twist and Shout
from Where's the Outrage? March 09, 2008
I was looking for music the other day and I came across The Beatles - Twist and Shout. This was a huge hit for them. But I was able to find a couple of versions of the song. So, I thought it would be interesting to splice some of these together. I thought about cutting up the song and that didn t sit well with me. So, we have Ed Sullivan introducing the Beatles in 1965 at Shea Stadium. After his introduction I cut to a 1964 performance then back the 1965 performance. Look at how they have changed. Just in that short period of time. They have added a scream or yell to their harmony. They are a little looser and freer in their performance. Their hair is significantly longer. Now, compare 1965 to a 1963 performance. Although this is a much more formal performance. See how John looks looser. He opens with a nice joke. Enjoy. beatles, ed sullivan, introducing the beatles, music, shea stadium

On what show was their first appearance? A: The Beatles' first US television appearance was on The Jack Paar Show on January 4, 1964 when Paar showed a film of the band playing "She Loves You". Before showing the performance, one of Parr's comments was "I understand science is working on a cure for this." Congratulations to this week's winner, Bryan Daste!
