Salmon Swimming Free – Rainforest Dispatches, chapter 7/9
from Choogle On! with Uncle Weed - Renegade documentaries on November 05, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
Visiting again with friend Kevin, Uncle Weed discusses the negative impact salmon fish farms impart on the local aquaculture. Specifically, Atlantic salmon living in pens attract hazardous sea lice, are unable to spawn, are fed with small fish imported from South America, and are dyed to appear more attractive in the supermarket. Further the politically controversial fish farms add little benefit to the local economy. While figuring out what happened, Uncle Weed recollects the tense logging blockades in early 1990s and compares current conditions through lens of deep ecology and sustainable development practices. The best on-line resource to search for water saving plumbing advice is on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Sense website (http://www.epa.gov/watersense/), a partnership program that makes it easy to save water and protect the environment. On the site you can find product recommendations for eco-friendly plumbing fixtures and systems, such as: faucets, toilets, landscape irrigation, valves, showerheads and weather or sensor based irrigation control technologies. There are also water saving tips and a calculator to help determine how much water you’ll save with each eco-friendly plumbing product. Some “Green” Plumbing tips to consider along with their subsequent savings are: • Fixing a leaky faucet can save 20 gallons a day. • Installation of a water filtration system will annually save up to 3200 plastic water bottles. • Replacing old toilets with a Water Sense® labeled toilet will cut down on water usage by 25 %. • Install a tankless water heater and become eligible for a $300 tax credit. On a commercial level, building owners and developers are now looking to a company, Aquatherm, a manufacturer of polypropylene piping systems. These systems create less waste in production and installation. It is recognized by GreenPeace International as the only “Future-friendly Plumbing Product” available today. The material is chemically inert and will not influence water quality, except that it contains no contaminates and lasts twice as long as plastic piping. Toward a Functional, Affordance-Centered Model of Person Perception, Prejudices, and Social Interaction: Taking into Account Life History and Ecological Considerations Traditional psychological and social science theories fail to account for the complexity and nuance that characterize people's prejudices and the manner in which, more generally, people view and interact with one another. I am developing an alternative, functional, affordance-based model, one positing (1) that our views of others are based on our inferences about their goals, the behavioral strategies they employ to reach them, and the tangible threats and opportunities afforded us by those strategies, and (2) that these goal and strategy inferences are themselves heuristically inferred from others' life history standing (i.e., age X sex categorization) in combination with stereotypes about the behavioral strategies favored by the different physical and social ecologies in which people live (i.e., "ecology stereotypes"). This vertically integrative framework-linking life history and ecological considerations to person perception processes-provides a more compelling account for a wide range of psychological and social phenomena related to intergroup stereotypes and prejudices, within-coalition stereotypes and prejudices, various social-cognitive biases, and the general accuracy of person perception and stereotypes.
