Weinstein - Apple - Sony BMG - Amazon - Echostar - CBS - FCC - MediaBytes 01.11.2008
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) January 11, 2008
APPLE will reportedly offer iTunes movie rentals from Warner Bros., Fox, Paramount, and Lions Gate. Rentals will cost $3.99 for 24 hours. An announcement is expected during the Steve Jobs keynote at Macworld on January 15th. HARVEY WEINSTEIN told reporters that WEINSTEIN CO. has signed an interim deal with the WGA. Weinstein called it a done deal that he expects to officially sign this morning. The self-declared lightning rod hopes the deal will push the major studios to return to the bargaining table. SONY BMG has officially announced that it will sell its entire catalog DRM-free on the Amazon MP3 download service. Amazon is now the only music download service selling unrestricted tracks from all four major labels. Dropping DRM has become a tactical necessity, as the labels look for a way to break Apple s stronghold on the music download market. Any serious iTunes competitor must offer iPod compatibility, a major benefit of the MP3 format. ECHOSTAR received CNET s Home Video Best of CES award for the TR-50, a digital-to-analog converter box. The feature-packed box includes a DVR that will record free over-the-air broadcasts of HDTV, a 7-day program guide to schedule recordings, an Ethernet connection for Internet functions and more. The TR-50 is the enhanced version of the stripped-down TR-40, a converter box that will be fully covered by the NTIA s converter coupon program. The TR-50 offers a compelling solution for consumers that don t have (or don t want) cable or satellite service. CBS will sell four TV stations to Four Points Media Group for $185 million. The deal finishes a round of medium and small market sell-offs for the network that began in 2006. CBS sold 11 TV stations and 39 radio stations during that time for almost $1 billion. It now owns 29 TV stations and 140 radio stations. THE FCC has given approval to a deal that will take Clear Channel Communications private for $19.5 billion. As part of the deal, the company will sell off 448 of its 1,150 radio stations. Shareholders have approved the deal and are now waiting for acceptance by the Justice Department. CES 2008 - Comcast - Cisco - EchoStar - Panasonic - Paramount - MediaBytes 01.08.2008
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) January 08, 2008
COMCAST CEO Brian Roberts will deliver this morning s CES keynote and reveal a plan to increase on-demand titles from 1,300 to 6,000. Roberts will also discuss the company s plans for Fancast.com, a guide to video that helps users find content online and offline. Fancast will let users search for any content in any format. A search on the site will return listings for TV, DVD, iTunes, Netflix, Amazon or web video sites like Hulu. The site will also integrate with Comcast and TiVo DVRs, letting users schedule recordings through the site. CISCO has designed an entertainment operating system that will help companies build online communities of viewers that watch specific TV shows or match other criteria. The Eos will monitor user interaction in the community and deliver both web-based content recommendations for users as well as targeted advertising. Eos will be tested on sites for the NHL and Nascar. ECHOSTAR has announced a $39.99 digital-to-analog converter box, which will be fully covered by the NTIA s $40 converter coupons. Users will only have to pay sales tax on the boxes. EchoStar is also working on higher-end converters that include DVR functionality but are not covered by the coupon program. In related news, the NTIA has certified 250 retailers and 19 different digital-to-analog converters for the program. Retailers include Best Buy and Wal-Mart. PANASONIC unveiled a new 150 inch Plasma TV, proclaiming it the world s largest high-def display. The TV offers 2160 4096 resolution, totaling almost 9 million pixels. Panasonic also unveiled an initiative with Google that will bring YouTube and the Picasa photo-sharing site to its new Viera HDTV s. PARAMOUNT will reportedly follow Warner Bros. in dropping support for HD DVD. The Financial Times is reporting the exclusive story and proclaiming this the latest final blow to HD DVD. SONY BMG announced the details of its new DRM-free offering, which requires users to go to retail stores, purchase cards and then visit a website to download the unprotected music. Downloads will come from Platinum MusicPass, a new site starting January 15th. Music download cards will be available at 4,500 retail outlets for $12.99. Sony BMG said the service is a great way to bring digital music to the physical retail space. Retailers may love the idea. Consumers will not. BITTORRENT announced that both Netgear and D-Link have joined its Device Partners program. The companies will license BitTorrent technology for devices that enable file sharing at home and across the web. As part of the program, BitTorrent has certified the D-Link Xtreme N DIR-655 router and installed its SDK on the DNS-323 storage unit. Netgear will use BitTorrent technology to power the Digital Entertainer HD, a device that brings Internet content (including hi-def streams) to HDTVs. Get the full story at http://www.Media30.com.

Facebook Beacon - Verizon - Comcast - WGA - MovieBeam - MediaBytes 12.06.2007
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) December 06, 2007
FACEBOOK made further concessions in its war against user privacy. Mark Zuckerberg publicly apologized on the company blog for a lot of mistakes surrounding Beacon admitting the company did a bad job with its release. Most importantly, he announced that users will now be able to completely opt-out of Beacon. VERIZON has rolled out HD VOD on FiOS TV in five markets, making 75 HD titles available. Three more markets will receive the service soon and it will available to all FiOS TV subscribers next year. The company is aiming for 1,000 hours of HD VOD and 150 HD channels by the end of 2008. COMCAST said it will lose video customers in 2008 due to increased competition from IPTV services from Verizon and AT s counter-offer to the AMPTP included a slight rollback of demands for online revenue sharing, asking that 2.5% of gross only be paid on revenue after the first year. During the first year of a release, payment would be tied to the number of streams a piece of content generated. Payment would be based on blocks of 100,000 streams and counting would be restarted every quarter. MOVIEBEAM will shutdown on December 15th. The company has been contacting customers to inform them of the shutdown and offering some of them refunds for recently-purchased MovieBeam boxes. The on-demand movie service used wireless signals to transmit movie rentals to customers. It was originally started by Disney. * Get the Story at Media30.com *

Filed under: Gaming, Home Entertainment, Podcasts, Portable Audio, Wireless What's with all the negativity, man? It's summer time and we'd think everybody'd be at the beach or drinking a beer, and yet it seems like we can't get through a week without this company or that going at another's throats -- or just laying down dead. EchoStar and TiVo have been really heating up this past week, but we really, um, exploded with the news that they are launching what amounts to be the largest consumer product recall in recent memory -- possibly in the history of consumer electronics. 4.1 million Dell batteries will make their way back to Dell at the same time Boeing kills off their in-flight internet access division, Connexion, but it's not all doom and gloom.
