Four CodePink mothers have been charged with trespassing at the Oakland Marine Recruiting Station and intimidating the U.S. Marines there. They could do up to a year in jail if convicted in a jury trial beginning this week. The four mothers - Pamela Bennett, Toby Blome, Medea Benjamin, and Zanne Joi - were jailed March 24 during a protest when they attempted to express their deep despair and profound anguish over the 4000th U.S. soldier death, the 1+ million Iraqi deaths, as well as the continued recruiting of youth. On Wednesday night the University of Berkeley held a press conference to respond to the judges ruling. This 35 minute audio file contains the complete content of the press conference. The left channel is from the audio board, and the right channel contains the rooms audio - some questions may be difficult to hear as a result.

As the battle between tree sitters in the Oak Grove near the Berkeley stadium and arborists hired by the university to cut traverse lines and remove platforms continued for the second day Wednesday, one supporter climbed a light pole to join the protestors in the trees. This rough video captures what happened.

On Tuesday morning, the University of California at Berkeley began the process of dismantling the support structures including platforms and traverse cable that had been used by the Berkeley tree-sitters who have occupied the Oak Grove for the past 18 months. The tree-sitters are attempting to stop the University from leveling the grove for a planned sports training facility.

On June 2nd, the Education for Sustainable Living Program (ESLP) class at UC Santa Cruz hosted an evening entitled "The University is Unsustainable: militarism, nuclearism, corporatism and the UC." Student researchers Jono and Leah presented on UCSC's Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) while UCSC alumni Will Parrish and Darwin BondGraham focused on the University of California from 1868 to 2008, from the genocide of Indigenous Nations, the Spanish American War and the Manhattan Project, through to the present: a time of renewed nuclear-militarism and increasing corporatization and privatization of the University. The Oakland City Attorney's Office has engaged in acts to coverup these unlawful tactics, failed and refused to disclose to the court, nor inform the Judge of their improper and illegal transgressions regarding the fact of the defendants removing and taking custody of the City of Oakland files for several months and allowed the trial to proceed knowing their liability and the legal impact of their spoliation of evidence of the documents therein and their unpardonable breach in the chain of custody of the City of Oakland files.

On Friday, May 2nd - the day after thousands of Bay Area residents marched for immigrants' rights - immigration agents conducted a large-scale raid at taquerias across San Francisco and the East Bay. Agents arrested about 60 employees at several locations of the El Balazo chain. Some of the workers have been released, but forced to wear electronic ankle bracelets while they await deportation hearings. Others are still imprisoned. Many were interrogated without legal representation. ICE claims that it targets those involved in criminal activity and doesn't do random enforcement. But most of the Balazo employees had no criminal records. They were arrested for the crime of working to support their families. Four-minute QT movie. 54MB.

Hear a half hour excerpt of a performance from members of the hip-hop group Bay 6. The performance was part of the anti-war rally at MLK Park in Berkeley on Sunday, March 16. The rally was organized by World Can't Wait, one of many local anti-war events that weekend preceding the 5th anniversary of the occupation of Iraq. (27:50)

Chevron is the third largest company in the US...seventh largest in the world. Last year, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company- also known as Conoco Phillips- made over $18 billion in profits - the highest amount ever made in it's nearly 130 year history. According to the Dept of Energy, Chevron has been refining oil from Iraq at its Richmond refinery since the war began. On Saturday, activists blockaded a Chevron refinery in Northern California, the first MOVE in a week of actions designed to "bring the war home." Puck Lo files this report From Richmond, CA.

Hundreds of people protested in Richmond on March 15th, 2008, to mark 5 years of war and occupation in Iraq and demand that Chevron stop stealing oil around the world while polluting our communities. The actions were in solidarity with the peoples, plants and animals of Ecuador, Nigeria, Burma, Iraq, Alberta and every other community exploited and poisoned by Chevron (Texaco, Unocal, etc!)
