2007 s Medal of Honor Airborne was the latest in the Medal of Honor series, and although it took a genuinely respectable approach to the tired WWII shooter genre, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare came out within the same month and easily overshadowed the game. Since Airborne, EA has been pretty mum on a new iteration of Medal of Honor until now. Electronic Arts today announced a new Medal of Honor, which leaves the overplayed WWII setting and focuses on modern-day Afghanistan. Players will be put in the shoes of a Tier 1 Operator, which is apparently a real military entity. EA is very serious about the multiplayer as well and is recruiting DICE, the developers of the Battlefield series. “When we first set out to reinvent Medal of Honor, we wanted to stay true to its roots of authenticity and respect for the soldier but bring it into today’s war. The Tier 1 Operator is the most disciplined, deliberate and prepared warrior on the battlefield. He is a living, breathing, precision instrument of war.” said Greg Goodrich, Executive Producer, Medal of Honor. “We are honored to have the rare opportunity to work closely with these men to create a game that shares their experience.” “EA has always been an advocate for telling the soldiers’ story. The new Medal of Honor follows that tradition. We felt it was important to tell the story of today’s war and today’s elite soldiers via today’s most relevant medium – videogames,” said Sean Decker, VP and General Manager of EALA. “We are so proud to bring together two powerhouse development teams to make this game a reality; EA Los Angeles and EA DICE. Medal of Honor promises to be an unforgettable entry in the modern shooter genre.” EA no doubt saw the success of the Call of Duty series going modern and wanted a piece of the pie. It does not look like a cash-in either because it looks like EA wants to win some hearts back over to their side. I know I have never even heard of a Tier 1 Operator and I consider myself relatively well-informed, but playing as one sounds really really cool. EA also says the game is inspired by today s most elite American soldier and takes a look at his will, mindset and uncompromising professionalism. Sounds dark and gritty. Before their upcoming game The Saboteur has even been released, EA-owned Pandemic Studios has already announced their plans for the future with Mercs, Inc. It will be the third in their Mercenaries series, which has existed since 2005. Mercs, Inc will be developed at the studios new home in Playa Vista, California. No release date or system specific details have been released.
