When things go bad, the powers that be, will stop at nothing to manipulate a discouraged and frightened populace into yet another fantasy of 'rags to riches' , so that they may stay complacent long enough not to revolt, despite their own deteriorating living conditions: As long as you work hard and try to get ahead, everything will be fine in the end - so the story goes. The reality, is somewhat different, I'm afraid, and feel-good-movies/entertainment are ALWAYS used in times of peril, and to great emotional effect, to keep real structural change at bay. It is nothing new. And people should recognize for what it is: a manipulation of your emotions towards fellow human beings, while the power structure itself remains unchanged, which make these awful conditions possible in the first place. The premise of films like these, rags to riches, is a false promise, not because it is impossible for most people on this planet to begin with, but because such 'riches' are not worthy of aspiration of any kind in the long run. Most people do not want to become millionaires or billionaires, they simply want to live their lives without having to worry about basics such as food and shelter, healthcare and just few other things, small things, which do not amount to luxury mansions or company jets. Yet the mainstream media, instill a belief, not in education, but luxury consumption, ranging from brand-name clothing to electronics, fast food consumption etc, because it is necessary for 'productivity'. Productivity for whom? And to what end? And notice the definition of 'consumer' within this larger context: in other words, if you get sick or ill, you are no longer regarded as a person or a patient, but as a CONSUMER of healthcare, a mere number to be considered within a system, which promotes profits over people and their well-being. Once you become ill, you are therefore no longer of any use to the overall profit margin, you become a huge liability, as far as the stock market is concerned.
