I will open this chapter with Only In America, having already told you the story behind it. Last year I think it was, I did a 4-part Podcast theme series called A Celebration Of America- and it is here at WLSO.FM. At the end of Part 4, I played that same song but by the Drifters, only because I wanted to play a different interpretation. Not knowing at the time that THEY had done the first and original version! So if you want to hear that piece of history, as I say, it is here. You just have to go back and look for it. After that great song for this holiday, Jay Black at his operatic best with a song by Rodgers s first success as a songwriter? They did a song he wrote called Sunday And Me, and I ve got and will play it, you ll hear if you listen, lol. The band s last hit reached # 19 in 1970, and was an old Ronettes tune. After that, I have a strange one, a curiosity they released in late 1966- an odd, very 60 s sound not at all like what we were used to hearing from them. Even the title is kinda weird, He s Raining In My Sunshine. Far out, man! Turns out Jay Black had a big gambling problem with some big debts, and he sold the group name to pay them off. Of note is that over the years the group included Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who left to form Steely Dan. Then, I have a couple of treats. One member of the Americans, Kenny Vance, started a group with the Planetones that in 1975 came out of nowhere with their doowop retro style, for an unlikely hit in the midst of what was by then a no longer experimental but a formulaic music scene. Their throwback sound broke the formula, and I just remember it seeming so out of place. But I liked it then and I like it now. As a born and bred New Yorker, I knew about singing in the subways and the bathrooms and Looking For That Echo! I will end this Independence Day show with a song I have played quite a few times before on the radio. I will never understand why this beautiful, wonderful song, done years ago by Eric Andersen, never became a perennial hit. Happy 4th Of July everyone, everywhere! And Happy Birthday America! Mike

Well after some vacationing, I am back from the dead with some more dead, lol! Oh, I need a rest from my rest. Picking up from where we left off, Liz Claiborne passed away last year, the famous clothing designer. I ve got something from the Kinks for her. The guy who wrote Unchained Melody died, Hy Zaret. Interesting story in that he was supposed to write it for a 1955 movie called Unchained, but he refused to include the word unchained anywhere in the song. Give a listen, he didn t! Also, we lost Boots Randolph, whose instrumental hit was equally famous for being the theme song for a very funny British comedian. You should recognize it immediately. Bill Pinkney the last remaining original Drifter died in 2007. He was the distinctive bass singer who left the group just before their major successes. As this was broadcast just one day after St. Pat s, I thought I would do my Mom proud by going back to Tommy Makem and the Clancys for one more. This one a folk song you should know. Hilly Crystal, founder and owner of the legendary CBGB s died last year. So one from the early punk band Television for him. Speaking of television, Alice Ghostley of the show Bewitched died- she will never be MORE Ghostley! I will leave you with a couple of questions. I got this idea in my head and had to get it out onto the screen. So, with the help of some pals of mine over at the Ruins of Filgaia Forums, this video came to be. I tried my best for most of the timing and matching up with the lyrics. I also tried to make good use of the wind heard at the beginning and end of the song. Colin McRae was one of the greatest individuals in the sport of rally. His ability to drive almost any motorized vehicle to victory was truly impressive and inspirational. The helicopter crash which took his life leaves all rally fans with a deep sense of loss. There will never be another Colin McRae.

The Rockstar Energy Drink 2007 Rally Team, must really be drinking their products. They have had a phenomenal performance record this year in their North American competitions. The twin Subaru STi cars are Tanner Foust & Co-Driver: Chrissie Beavis (Car #34) with Andrew Pinker and Robbie Durant in (Car #5). They must have their boost "turned up to 11". The Syms pit crew kept things rolling along with ease while the Tein suspension seemed to outperform all of the other competitors equipment. This footage was shot while training for the X-Games 13 Super Special Stage Jump. Tanner & Chrissie, went on to win the X-Games 13 Rally Car event with the smooth, clean driving which they are known for. Rock on ! Thanks to Rally America and ESPN for allowing media access to the training grounds. Soundtrack is "Rockstar" by SK and Dante Thomas.

Team DSG crashed their Mitsubishi Evo dramatically at XGames Practice !!! This is the best footage you will find!!!! They came up about a car length short and rebounded end over end. Ramana Lagemann & co-driver Mark Williams walked away shaken up, but resolved to compete in the XGames. Unfortunately the degree of damage caused further complications with their engine during the actual Stadium Special Stage and they had to give up. Hopefully we will see them on the podium next year. Thanks to Rally America and EXPN for access to the Lake Elsinore Training Grounds. Soundtrack by Kabuki 5000.
