SomaCow 349: The Channel Project

Originally clicked at SomaCow.com In this hour, we invited Ryan of The Channel Project to join us in studio, and spent some time familiarizing ourselves, discussing Orlando podcasting, radio, business, and some of the behind the scenes stuff we don t normally get into on the show. I really enjoyed meeting the guy, and not just because he brought scrumptious Thai to our studios. We talked at great length about comedians, so I wanted to figure out what I considered to be the five influential comedians on my life. I am sure most of these come as no surprise. 5. Louie Anderson - Hated by kewl people all over the world, Louie s self effacing nature and loud, abrasive father figure rang true to my adolescent ears. He was somehow impermeable to fat jokes, capable of insulting himself, and maybe even glorifying the abuse of his body. What I knew at that age were slurpees, obesity, and the strange love, fear, contempt, and awe that can exist between a boy and his pa, and Louie did that with style. His later cartoon work, and horrifying stint on Family Feud notwithstanding, Mr. Anderson was one of the first to make me fall in love with comedy. His book, Dear Dad, Letters From an Adult Child was a painful, but powerful, read. 4. George Carlin - Well, yeah. Obviously. 3. David Cross - I cannot to this day believe what he would say on stage. Bootlegs, handmade vhs and dvd, store bought specials, Mr. Show, and that god awful FOX sitcom, David always seems to be a man floating all around success and public acceptance, but never truly getting the credit he deserves. David is whiny and brilliant, lazy and creative, angry and timid, sarcastic and thoughtful, and viciously capable of lacerating a public figure, audience member, or himself in one well aimed barb. I appreciate his candor, and even when he bombs a bit, it s still entertaining, because he is bombing fighting the good fight. 2. Sinbad - I know, right? Sorry, but he made me comfortable. His schtick centered around familial, momma, and food observations, and he usually played pretty clean, but he gave comedy a much needed wider audience. His roots in Star Search and tendency to win Image awards kind of make him a Man of the People to me, and he never made me feel guilty for being white, unlike Pryor and Murphy and Rock and Chapelle. Sinbad knew I was a cracker, but he was willing to spread cheese on me and make something useful out of the situation. 1. Margaret Cho - If I want to succeed, be funny, have friends, smell well, have a point, be intelligent, avoid herpes, speak clearly, or remain relevant in any way, all I need to do is avoid repeating any decision made by Margaret Cho. What a horrible body of work. I defy anyone to listen to five minutes of anything she has ever done and find ANY redeemable quality to it. Her comedy is what made me realize that hardly any woman, ever, is funny. Except Tina. Wowzah. Aoooga. Nom.

Originally posted at somacow.com SomaCow Media is proud to present SomaCow, brought to you by Adam and Eve (dot com). In this, their finest hour, the guys welcomed Drew Garabo into the studio. Drew is what talk radio is all about for a lot of us. Geoff and I would come home from work, make dinner, and turn on Drew to listen to while we ate and then did whatever it is that we did before we had two laptops. Drew made his way up the rankings in the local talk radio circuit and then, due to changes here and there, moved on to other bluer and whiter pastures. Drew shares his feelings about how things went down for him and other recent losses to the local talk radio community. Even if you aren t from Orlando, you ll understand. Maybe it s the red tape and politics around how you lost your job, or even maybe some talent in your local radio community. Or maybe if you shot your wife and her dog accidentally after reloading the gun, aiming, and pulling the trigger. OK, so none of us understood that but we got Drew s take on it. So is terrestrial radio dying? Are they going like the newspapers? Well, if they are, Drew is ready. He now works with the Magic (blue and white has done ignited!) and what a time for them! Geoff admits to not always being the biggest fan but that he is on that proverbial band wagon now! Hey, at least we re not rooting against them, right? If you want to look into getting tickets, just click on the link above and you ll find Drew s pic and email address! It wasn t all about radio and The Orlando Magic. Oh no, these guys got on the spanking topic. And not the spanking like you might do in the privacy of your own room with your new adamandeve.com products. No, we re talking about one of Drew s favorite topics on air before he even had his son .punishing your kids. Ross brought up this topic. You can tell Ross is a radio show call-in pro. If you ever wanted to get Drew to drop the subject he was on, you just had to call and ask how he felt about pit bulls and shark bites hitting your kid (sorry, habit). Drew shares his parenting techniques with the guys. It s nice to hear that after all this time they still have never hit Xander, which goes along with the stance Drew always took on hitting your kids which is never. Good on ya, as Geoff would say. Not to worry folks, Geoff will be back writing I promise! He s just had a busy work week so I am filling in. I hope you re enjoying it and if not, well, read J s blogs. At least he s writing them again!

Originally posted at SomaCow.com SomaCow Media is proud to present SomaCow, brought to you in this hour by SeaDad. Take a moment, and reflect on all that he and soldiers, seamen, and such do to make our lives less explosive every day. In this hour, Mickey gave us some Gulf War Stories, we talked for a few moments with twitter.com/beachbeat (Who still insists that she is NOT Drew Garabo calling in with an Orlando Magic halftime report, and we each provided our Manly Thing of the Week. Those of you that know Mickey know pain. Wait, no. Those of your that no Mickey gnaw pine. Crap The guy is just Okay You know how there is a river, or better yet, a creek? Or just a puddle. Yes. A Puddle. So there is this puddle, and it is just sitting there. Maybe it has a dull sheen of what could be motor oil or Arby s Roast Beef Rainbow Juice resting on top of it. So, you engage this puddle, and it sucks you in, and traps you forever in a mirror realm where conservative ideas seem sound, dogs are vile and to be avoided, and calculus is easy. Oh, and the puddle is deep. Like fathoms. Crazy deep. You get down there, and Captain Nemo is all like, Whoa, this be deep, yarr and you stare at him, cause he isn t supposed to talk like a Pirate, but this is Mickey we re talking about, and shit like that just happens. And while you are entirely sure you are not drowning in this puddle, you are still offput the entire time you have your face down there, cause it s just not what you are used to. In this hour, we get a glimpse a bit deeper into Mickey s Puddle. I mean, the dude sat on a nuke and pointed it around the ocean, and says it was, kinda boring . We d like to thank Beach Beat for calling in, and apologize again for any confusion. Essentially, Ross is on the social media sites during the show, pimping, hooking, and acting a lot like Cheech Marin outside a Mexican Burlesque Bar, roping in passers-by and generally selling what we are doing inside. It s enough to make me consider employing a phone screener. Maybe we can have a Beach Report next week, helping us to find the best place to stay this summer. I d also like to thank the boys down at Just Brakes for getting my car running again. It was expensive, but from all accounts, the same work at my dealership would have been thousands, and I am happy to have paid what I did. Ross s Manly segment wins this week. Peeow! PeeeOW! Thanks for listening, and remember to save the date for August 22nd!

SomaCow Media is proud to present SomaCow brought to you by the Drew Show. Yep, this hour (our finest), we had Orlando s own Drew Garabo in the studios. Drew used to host talk shows on terrestrial radio here in Orlando and for many of us, was a staple every night from 7 to 11. Drew has now joined us in the uberranks of podcasting! So this hour, we talked to Drew about the state of radio today. Is it going away from terrestrial radio? What is the next big thing? Satellite or podcasts? And what is up with companies thinking that people who are listening to a talk show want to suddenly hear music? Hybrids might work in a car but not in radio. The guys also talked about sports! It s true! Listen! Golf, football, basketball it s amazing what the guys actually know about sports. I mean they couldn t give Ryan a run for his money but they have some knowledge So it was an honor and a blast having Drew in for this hour. We thank him. Check out his show! The website has all of the podcasts and he has, at least recently, been doing live shows on Tuesday nights on ustream. And for those of you catching this blog Friday, SomaCow will be doing their 3 hour live show tonight (Friday) from 8-11 PM Eastern. See you there! Related articles by Zemanta Financial Infidelity.
