Most people look insane wearing tiaras. Even still, gay men and women all across the world compete in pageants that cost a ton of money to participate in and for what? The competition is often so stacked against you and it s more about who you know rather than how fierce a queen you are. And even if you do win, the titles don t necessarily advance your career. So why do these ladies do it? Because it s fun. Just like thousands of young people line up to be rejected on American Idol television show, some gay men just think it s a blast to go through all the trouble and sacrifice to put on a show. Drag ties us to something powerful and we enjoy the temporary illusion we create when lip syncing and instead of being just another gay guy, we re Diana Ross! A little hair and make-up and the right outfit and attitude we ve become royalty. Queen for a night. On today s show one of our local drag queens and behind-the-scenes pageant diva Richard Biasis, better known as Regina Upright, joins us to talk about what inspires drag queens to entertain others and themselves. Why are these gay men spending so much time and effort to imitate strong powerful women? What makes Cher such an icon? Listen as Marc Felion, Richard Biasis and me, Fausto Fernós talk about the British man dying from eating too many fairy cakes and the 39 year old Japanese man who got caught trying to show up at a high school trying to pass as a teenage schoolgirl wearing a uniform, makeup and long wig. On Saturday, June 21st academics, performers, and thinking perverts gathered in Amsterdam at Paradiso to discuss sexuality and porn, as well as to dance, mingle, and watch terrific performances at the culminating event in the Pinched festival. R.I.P Kalitta Here's a little bit about his life: The NHRA said the 46-year-old Kalitta - the 1994 and 1995 Top Fuel season champion who had 18 career victories, 17 in Top Fuel and one in Funny Car - was taken to the Old Bridge division of Raritan Bay Medical Center, where he died a short time later. Kalitta's Toyota Solara was traveling at about 300 mph when it burst into flames. The Palmetto, Fla., resident started his career at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in 1982. His father, Connie Kalitta, was a longtime driver and team owner known as "The Bounty Hunter," and his cousin, Doug Kalitta, also drives competitively. "We are deeply saddened and want to pass along our sincere condolences to the entire Kalitta family," the NHRA said in a statement. "Scott shared the same passion for drag racing as his legendary father, Connie. He also shared the same desire to win, becoming a two-time series world champion. He left the sport for a period of time, to devote more time to his family, only to be driven to return to the drag strip to regain his championship form. ... He will be truly missed by the entire NHRA community." Kalitta had most of his racing success in Top Fuel, highlighted by his series titles in 1994 and 1995. He retired from racing in 1997, sitting out most of two seasons before returning for a 10-race campaign in 1999. You ll need to know what type of buffer suits you most: an electric model, or a pneumatic one powered by an air compressor. The pneumatic is powered by a separate compressed air source, while the buffer itself is light and requires almost zero maintenance.
