1998 Florida Derby Grade I

1998 Florida Derby Grade I

Lil's Lad was tired but sound; Cape Town was tired but redeemed. Mike Smith was hurting; Jerry Bailey was angry. And all of them, leading players on the wildest Florida Derby day in decades, were hoping to play leading roles on the grandest day of the racing year: May 2, the day of the Kentucky Derby. Lil's Lad was tired after finishing first in the Florida Derby on Saturday and, though he was disqualified by the Gulfstream Park stewards for interference in the homestretch, he added luster to his stature as the star candidate for the Kentucky Derby. Cape Town was redeemed after flying through the homestretch under Shane Sellers to collar Lil's Lad, only to be sideswiped near the finish. Cape Town crossed the line second, but was awarded first place. Bailey was angry because he was taking the blame for Lil's Lad's wayward path: first at the head of the stretch, where he brushed Coronado's Quest, and later near the finish line, where he drifted out and interfered with Cape Town. Smith, the regular rider on Coronado's Quest, was hurting with a cracked collarbone, which might require four to six weeks' rest and will probably cost him a role in the Kentucky Derby. Bailey, the leading jockey in the country, was seething this morning over the ride given Coronado's Quest by Robbie Davis, a fellow New Yorker who was drafted to replace Smith after he was injured in a spill three races before the Florida Derby. ''I expected Coronado's Quest to make an early move,'' Bailey said, ''but I didn't expect the four or five shots he gave Lil's Lad. He claims my horse got out, and he did a little, but four more good shots is something else. It made my horse mad and determined. I can't say enough about him, how game he was. ''I tried to keep him straight, but when he saw Cape Town coming, he thought it was Coronado's Quest again, and took another shot.'' Shug McGaughey, who trains Coronado's Quest, suggested that his colt's unruly behavior might force him to skip the Kentucky Derby. The horse threw Smith before the Hutcheson last month, and he threw Davis before the Florida Derby, and people were predicting that he would no longer be allowed to be saddled privately in the tunnel between the paddock and the track. ''We're going to look at the Wood Memorial in New York now,'' McGaughey said. ''If I don't like what I see, we may just stop for a while. The Kentucky Derby is still a slight possibility.'' For the video: http://www.boredinthedorm.net http://www.zumont.com Beijing: The biggest drama of the day came with Matos' response after being disqualified against Chilmanov. Matos shoved the referee and kicked him in the head in a furious reaction. The Cuban took gold in the 2000 Olympics, but he did not take kindly to being disqualified halfway through the bout for taking too long to return to action after an injury. Matos was leading 3-2, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent. Fighters have a maximum of one minute's break for injury, and the referee removed him from the competition as soon as the time elapsed. Matos pushed and kicked the referee, drawing blood from the mouth, then attacked the Swedish judge before spitting on the floor and being escorted out of the arena. Both Matos and his coach Leudis Gonzalez have been swiftly handed a lifetime ban from all World Taekwondo Federation championships, subject to confirmation by the International Olympic Committee. Angel Matos is a cuban sportsman. He was suspended for life on Saturday, he throws a kick to the judge after losing a battle for the bronze medal in the Olympic Games. A Cuban taekwondo athlete and his coach were banned for life after Angel Matos kicked the referee in the face following his bronze-medal match disqualification.Cuban coach Leudis Gonzalez offered no apology for Matos' actions during the men's over-80 kg (176 pounds) match.Matos was winning 3-2, with 1:02 in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov. He was sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden. Matos then spat on the floor and was escorted out. He was too strict, Gonzalez said, referring to the decision to disqualify Matos. Afterward, he charged the match was fixed, accusing the Kazakhs of offering him money. This is a strong violation of the spirit of taekwondo and the Olympic Games. The sanctions are the following and are effective immediately: Lifetime ban of the coach and athlete in all championships sanctioned by the (World Taekwondo Federation) and at the same time, all records of this athlete at the Beijing Games will immediately be erased, said the announcer, reading a WTF release. In his first match, Matos defeated Italy's Leonardo Basile, then beat China's Liu Xiaobo 2-1 in the quarterfinals. But he lost to South Korean Cha Dong-min in the semis to land in the bronze-medal match. To me it was obvious he was unable to continue, Chilmanov said. His toe on his left foot was broken. Matos won the gold medal in this division at the 2000 Sydney Games, dedicating the victory to his mother, who died on the day of the opening ceremony. At the 2004 Athens Games, he finished 11th.Matos' tantrum followed a day of confusion on the mats.
