Lil's Lad was tired but sound; Cape Town was tired but redeemed. Mike Smith was hurting; Jerry Bailey was angry. And all of them, leading players on the wildest Florida Derby day in decades, were hoping to play leading roles on the grandest day of the racing year: May 2, the day of the Kentucky Derby. Lil's Lad was tired after finishing first in the Florida Derby on Saturday and, though he was disqualified by the Gulfstream Park stewards for interference in the homestretch, he added luster to his stature as the star candidate for the Kentucky Derby.
