The best part of the Gilroy Garlic Festival isn't the food. Or the entertainment. And it's certainly not the blazing California sun. The best part is, without a doubt, the people that make it all happen and maybe the food.A phalanx of 4,000 volunteers descend upon Christmas Hill Park every year and transform the green into a maze of food booths and stages. From trash removal to parking to filling the bellies of more than 100,000 garlic lovers, the volunteers keep the festival running smoothly, and some have been doing it since day one.In this video, we talk to some of the volunteers that make the festival happen.

The 30th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival kicked off Friday morning with a special dedication to Val Filice, the founder of the festival who died late last year.Festival President Ed Struzik lit a torch off the large metallic garlic bulb and passed it along a line to Gourmet Alley, where it was used to light the burners.In this video, we show you the the opening dedication.

A suspicious fire gutted the main building of the Gateway School in south Gilroy tonight. The blaze erased the rebuilding efforts that parents, teachers and administrators had launched since another suspicious fire gutted the same building just six months ago.At 7:27 p.m., firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire at 7151 Hanna Street, near Glen View Elementary School, said Battalion Chief Phil King. The building, already heavily damaged from a January fire, was nearly destroyed by 8:30 p.m.Charred remains of the outer walls fell to the ground in clumps and only a skeleton of the building remained. The cast and crew of Food Network's "How'd That Get on My Table?" were in south Gilroy Wednesday to tape an episode.Host Sunny Anderson and her five-person crew toured the ConAgra facility to get a sense of how garlic goes from the field to the table. In particular, they saw how the garlic was peeled, crushed, dehydrated and packaged.The episode is scheduled to run in the fall.In this video, Anderson talks about why she came to Gilroy and how garlic stacks up against the other foods she has featured so far.

North Gilroy residents who were less than thrilled with the prospect of 72 homes being built in their backyard may have to deal with 99. The old Las Animas Elementary School site at 8450 Wren Ave. is owned by the Gilroy Unified School District and zoned for a public facility. Looking to sell the land at its maximum value, the district is acting as developer, jumping through the necessary hoops to rezone the land as a medium density residential development. The district's applications for a zone change, tentative map and architectural and site review narrowly passed the planning commission with a four to three vote, with 80 conditions. The proposal was scheduled to go before the city council Monday night but a school board decision postponed the review. The San Martin county medical offices are getting a facelift, and a new home.Slated to open for business Oct. 7, Valley Health Center Gilroy boasts 49 examination rooms, three treatment and seven dental rooms. The sparkling 59,000-square-foot facility dwarfs the current center in San Martin that s bursting at the seams. Linda Pulido may have gotten into Tae Kwon Do for all the wrong reasons, but it would also be wrong to say the black belt and 10-time world champion has stayed involved in martial arts for those same reasons.Growing up tough on the streets of Gilroy, Pulido rarely backed down from a fight. The Gilroy Fire Department held an Auto Extrication and Incident Command demonstration for the Leadership Gilroy Class of 2008 Friday afternoon in the sweltering heat. Fire Education Specialist Vicki Seaton willingly locked herself in a wrecked car to simulate the scene of an accident.
