Climate Change -- the scientific debateClimate Change -- the scientific debate
from Top Rated
September 21, 2008

A basic look at how climate scientists infer that man-made carbon gases are changing the climate, and how this view is contradicted by other climate scientists who are skeptics. I am a former science correspondent with an interest in reporting the facts, not the media hype. My thanks to 9thgate for checking my script for errors.

September 17, 2008

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2008/07/02/Advancing_Sustainability_in_the_Oil_and_Gas_Industry StatoilHydro President and CEO Helge Lund argues that increased use of natural gas should be part of any plan to combat global warming by reducing CO2 emissions. This excerpt was recorded in collaboration with the 19th World Petroleum Congress, in Madrid, Spain, on July 2, 2008. ----- Helge Lund, President and CEO of StatoilHydro, and Francis Saville, Chairman of the Board at Nexen Inc., participate in a discussion of developing sustainable practices in their respective companies. William Hogan, Professor of Global Energy Policy, Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University moderates. Helge Lund is the Chief Executive Officer for the StatoilHydro group. He started his career as a consultant for McKinsey & Company and as political adviser for the Conservative Party in Storting before starting work for Hafslund Nycomed in 1993. In 1997-8 he was Vice President in Nycomed Pharma before starting work in Aker RGI in 1999 as Vice President before becoming CEO for Aker Kværner in 2002. Gilbert Gas, one of The Quirkles, KOLR 10, and Terri Johnson demonstrate a fun dry ice science experiment and talk about carbon dioxide on the KOLR 10 morning news show. The Quirkles books are an educational series that offer a fresh new way to integrate literacy and science at school or at home. Each book is full of vocabulary builders, character education lessons, and two related science experiments that allow for hands on activities, helping to reinforce the topics that were just read. The series was created by teachers, and each story teaches/reinforces the phonetic sounds that serve as the building blocks for reading, while also making science--earth, physical, and life--fun to learn.

Old Coal Plant Smokestack DetonatedOld Coal Plant Smokestack Detonated
from The UpTake
June 28, 2008

Little known to the general public, in order to keep our "mainstream press license", The UpTake needs to release a video of something exploding at least once per year. Here is our entry from St. Paul, MN. Xcel Energy has converted the High Bridge power plant from coal to natural gas in order to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate pollutants like mercury. They are demolishing sections of the site no longer active and will convert them for community use. Thankfully, this video meets all of our criteria: guys throwing up a high-five after the collapse, someone woefully misjudging the size of the smoke stack, etc.

Lecture by Professor Richard Muller of the University California, Berkeley. Taken from Lectures 20 and 21 of the spring 2008 webcasts of Physics For Future Presidents. Also known as Descriptive Introduction to Physics. Emphasis is on conceptual understanding, rather than mathematics. This lecture deals with the physics of climate change, the data on global temperature and carbon dioxide changes, and some potential solutions. Also covered are the many mistakes that can be made, including the trap of exaggeration. He warns against the danger of cherry picking and overstating the case. When people discover that the exaggerated case is not valid, they may dismiss the problem altogether. Professor Muller has researched this topic for many years and has co-authored a book with Gordon MacDonald called "Ice Ages and Astronomical Causes". The reports of the IPCC are referenced much during this lecture.
