Red Mist came out to DVD without too much fanfare, but those working in the fields of horror journalism probably heard of it during its production; by two different names. At one point the title of Red Mist was Freakdog, which in my opinion should have been the title to remain. After watching the movie, regardless of title, there won’t be too much remaining in my memory of it all; or perhaps the filmmakers did almost touch me with a moment.nnRed Mist was directed by Irishman Paddy Breathnach, previously best known for his psychedelic murder in the woods movie Shrooms. The movie Red Mist is about a group of medical students that bully a young outsider to their group because of his creepy peeping tom like behaviors and unsociable stutter. However, things go too far when he is perceived as a threat needing to be neutralized, due to incriminating evidence he holds over their heads involving a little something-something. Too far I say? Yeah, they end up putting him in a coma, but within that deep slumber and with the help of some good medicine, perhaps the “freak dog” can still get revenge. And so the blood flows.nnThe acting in the movie is okie-dokie with a cast headed up by Arielle Kebbel. She isn’t a stranger to the horror genre and fits in well, having also acted in: Reeker, The Grudge 2, and The Uninvited. Playing along with her aren’t too many people you’d probably recognize, but Andrew Lee Potts does an amiable job as the “freakdog.”nnEven with acting skills in place for the most part, the characters ended up being the biggest logical flaw. The people being killed are set-up more or less to deserve what is coming to them. So, when the lead heroine decides to fight back it doesn’t make much sense for her to be a champion for the assholes. In fact, if anyone could understand the degree to which the victims deserve to be slaughtered one by one, it would seemingly be her. However there she is wanting to kill someone to stop all the killing even though the one she wants to kill is the one she holds a great burden of guilt towards for having almost killed in the first place. Get it? Yeah, crap. Not sure who didn’t get the characters down just right, but this is what took potential “A” material and flunked it for me.nnOther than that whoopsie-doo of storytelling the movie itself works as entertainment with some good moments making it into the otherwise formulaic plot. I am especially fond of the way one scene of bloodletting was handled involving some music, a girl, broken glass, seeping wounds, and strobe lights. Stellar moment and possibly the one that almost reached out and touched me enough to be impressed with the emotional content.nnRed Mist is a worthy rental. I don’t expect people to get too excited over it, but it worked okay enough for me to say I was entertained. I’ll forget everything not too long from now, I am sure. Unless that one single scene creeps back up into memory, just because I enjoyed the execution of it.
