They found that 67 percent think about quitting their jobs regularly or constantly, while 72 percent said they want to start their own business. The number one reason cited for this was to be more passionate about their work. ___ ___ The participants were asked who inspired them: Donald Trump (38%) and Hugh Hefner (34%) were the top choices for men; Oprah Winfrey received 66% of the women s vote. That response made us think there are misperceptions of what it means to own a business; what an entrepreneur faces day-to-day. There s the Hollywood version, but it often doesn t reflect the real world. 5 common myths about owning your own business #1 I won t have to answer to a boss. While technically true, it s not accurate in practice. The reality is that, as a business owner, you answer to every customer by you and your firm. You answer to your banker if you borrow money. The government will require you to do certain things by certain times. As a business owner, you won t have a boss; you ll have many bosses! #2 I set my own hours. You ve probably seen or heard the ads. Just buy this business opportunity you ll hardly have to work and the money will just pour in. If only it worked that way! You may enjoy a great deal of flexibility as a business owner. So I started my own business I quickly realized that I couldn t afford to pay me what I thought I was worth! ___ #5 I ll have less stress than I do with my job. ___ As a first-time entrepreneur, I ve learned that stress hits from many angles clients with deadlines, so much work to get done, and worries when things don t go as planned. I ve learned to be much tougher mentally and emotionally. ___ All of this reminds us of Jackson Browne s song, The Load Out They re the first to come, and the last to leave, working for that minimum wage. In the song, he s talking about roadies. But we wonder couldn t he be describing start-up entrepreneurs? When your business is in the start-up phase, it s like a newborn baby. You have to nurture it and care for it until it reaches the point where it doesn t need you so much anymore. Prepare yourself for a five-year horizon before you start. There s a great page on the Emory University site called They Did Not Give Up. It shows things that were said to, or situations that were faced by, a number of famous people. . . Some examples The first book that Dr. Seuss wrote was rejected by 27 publishers. The first time Sigmund Freud presented his ideas to his fellow scientists, he was booed from the stage. His response? He returned to his office and kept writing A newspaper editor fired Walt Disney because he lacked imagination and had no good ideas. Disney declared bankruptcy several times before he built Disneyland, which was rejected by the City of Anaheim the first time he proposed it. And speaking of Walt Disney, he made a mistake of his own when he didn t hire Charles Schultz. For Schultz, though, that was par for the course. Even the high school yearbook staff didn t think much of his work every cartoon he submitted to them was rejected. After his first audition, the casting director told Sidney Poitier to stop wasting people s time and go out and become a dishwasher or something. Poitier resolved at that moment to devote his life to acting. Sometimes it doesn t pay to listen . My first real at-risk business was a Ben Franklin franchise in my hometown. It s a small town so back-to-school is a bigg season. We wanted to be open in time to capitalize on it. My franchise representative told me it couldn t be done. His boss said it couldn t be done. We determined we were going to do it. So we did! We opened to throngs of people patronizing our store and a bigg splash by the local media splash. It was a hit! . Sometimes it pays to listen and adapt . When I was in high school, I tried out for the basketball team. I made the first cut. I made the second cut. When the final cut came out, I looked at the list and my name wasn t on it. I looked again. I couldn t believe it! But I hadn t made the team. So I took up music. I won awards. I even won a scholarship. My failure to make the basketball team allowed for bigger success in music than I could have ever imagined! . So it s kind of funny. Sometimes it pays to ignore what people tell us. At other times, our disappointments fuel our bigg success. Today s discussion was inspired by a great post on the pitfalls of persistence, written by Michael Bailey of Mobasoft. . . . When Mary-Lynn first started brought this post up, I thought she was asking me if she was persistent or stubborn. Now I do have an opinion on that! . I have an opinion on George, too so we decided to keep our opinions to ourselves. . . Michael asks if there is a difference between persistence and perseverance. . I think there is if things are working the way that you want them to, you have to be persistent with what s making things work to persevere. Now, if things aren t working out the way you want them to, then you have to change your course to persevere. So you can t be persistent in the wrong thing. . I think it s a matter of semantics. As a matter of fact, they are synonyms. I can respect the fine line that Mary-Lynn is drawing. But I m going to be stubborn and stick with my original comment they are one and the same. . See, George just admitted that he s stubborn! I agree that if you look it up, they are synonyms. But I equate persistence with action and perseverance with a destination. . See how stubborn Mary-Lynn can be! And I was being persistent before. Mary-Lynn s last comment is consistent with Seth Godin s definition. Only he uses the word persistence instead of perseverance. He said, Persistence isn t using the same tactics over and over. That s just annoying. Persistence is having the same goal over and over. . That s interesting. Here s an example when I was in radio, I was very persistent about doing whatever I could to grow as a broadcaster. . Some might call it stubborn. . . But I got to the point, with my job, where I knew I couldn t persevere. I had gone as far as it could take me. So I decided to walk away and start Bigg Success with George I can still persist, grow, and learn more things, plus I can persevere on my own terms. . One of the definitions of persistence, straight from Merriam-Webster s Online Dictionary, is stubbornness. If you keep running into a wall, you have to ask yourself if you re being persistent or stubborn. Michael refers to it as blind persistence. 2 questions to ask with your end goal in mind Am I doing the wrong thing? If this is the case, persisting is just plain stubbornness. Of course, it s not always that clear-cut. You may have invested a lot of time and money into a project, a direction, or a business. But it s not working. You don t want to give up so you just keep trying. Try to determine if it can work by honestly assessing why it s not working. Am I doing the right thing in the wrong way? You may be doing the right things to reach your end goal, but you haven t mastered the right techniques to advance toward your goal.
