Using Photographs to Enhance Videos of a Static Scene
from Vimeo / Videos stevegarfield likes August 17, 2008
The work presents a system for automatically producing a wide variety of video enhancements and visual effects. Unlike traditional visual effects software (e.g., After Effects, Shake, Boujou, etc), the system is completely automatic and no manual labor is required from the user. The major limitation of the work is that it can currently handle only videos of static scenes (i.e., videos shot with a moving camera but containing no moving objects in the scene). Efforts are being made to lift this restriction in future work. Applications of the system include: High resolution/definition video, High dynamic range video, Removing objects from a video, Creating painterly (NPR) videos, Video stabilization, Easy video editing Project website: grail.cs.washington.edu/projects/videoenhancement/videoEnhancement.htm Cast: pro

16-Bit Levels
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) April 27, 2008
The 16 bit mode allows us to introduce 32,000 luminance levels of data per channel, which in theory gives us access to billions of colour variations inside one RGB image, enough to make any number of extreme edits and not produce a single sign of colour banding or posterization. Sometimes seeing is understanding, and understanding is believing.

Katie - NSGmusic
from YouTube :: Videos by JDM525 April 09, 2008
Download HD video at - http://jdm525.net/2008/04/katie-nsgmusic.html So the first weekend of April NSG and I decided to make a new music video (or two). We went to Yoyo's basement club where NSG introduced me to a couple of his friends - one of which was Mark Ronson. On the day of the shoot we arrived back to my car half an hour late and I got a parking penalty of £80 (for just two hours of parking). Today when I was thinking of an appeal I noticed that the registration they recorded was wrong. So those money grabbers can kiss my ass! - and get a real job. Check out the original video from NSG at - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lOWCWP8sMv8 Technical Specs: Filmed on a Sony HDR-FX1 set into 'CineFrame25' (progressive mode) with the 'CinemaTone' gamma picture profile. Edited with Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 and cropped into a '2.4:1' aspect ratio by exporting final video into 1920x792 resolution. Most shots are enhanced with color grading filters using 'Magic Bullet Looks' - effects such as the 'Warm & Fuzzy' and 'MisFire Vignette' (additional plug-in for Premiere Pro). Selected shots were further enhanced with a 'Depth of Field' look by applying a 'lens blur' effect in Adobe After Effects 7 Pro. Exported into an un-compressed AVI at 1920x792 (2.4:1 aspect) and exported again using QuickTime Pro for the HD video and a YouTube compressed video with the H.264 codec before finally uploading. Three Hour Lunch
from Vimeo / Videos stevegarfield likes March 14, 2008
Three Hour Lunch from Tom Guilmette on Vimeo. I bought six new lenses and put two of them to the test in this short film. I shot this during my extended lunch break after I was finished setting up network TV for the Bruins game at the TD Bank North Garden in Boston. I then took my Sony Z1U with the Letus35 Extreme adapter outside and shot in and around Quincy Market. This film was what I saw, where I went and the people I bumped into. I used a Sigma 17mm f4.5 super wide angle prime and a sweet Nikon 85mm f2 prime. These manual lenses were beat up and used, but they still have a lot of life left in them. It was difficult shooting indoors with the 17mm because of light loss. Most of the wide indoor shots had 9dB gain added while recording. The video was edited with Final Cut Pro and I used Magic Bullet Looks for vignette and color grading. I also used a filter effect to add more color saturation. Music selection: Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I - Track 1 Cast: Tom Guilmette

An In-Depth Look at Genetic Variation
from NPR: Science Friday February 22, 2008
Researchers have mapped out 650,000 common, single-letter genetic variations in 938 individuals from 51 populations. They then used that information to trace the migration of the first modern humans -- lending support to the theory that the first humans moved out of Africa across the globe.
