Pictures of Big Atomic Bombs Going Off: Operation Cue (64)
from Revver - house Videos July 24, 2008
Author: QIP1 Added: Thu, 24 Jul 2008 11:55:55 -0800 Duration: 61This 1964 film by the Department of Defenses Office of Civil Defense was an attempt to outline the effects of a nuclear blast on American soil using a Nevada test site in 1955, and the a more powerful nuclear weapons test in 1964. An important part of American military history, the army conducted elaborate atomic bomb tests, which required the building of power lines, transformers, and a complete substation that would imitate the damage that would be sustained on American infrastructures. In order to better gauge the effects of nuclear radiation, five different kinds of furnished houses were also built, and dummies wearing civilian clothes were set up in the test area. At one point, reporter Joan Collins observes that after the blast, the clothes on the test dummies have faded. Collins takes the viewer from the planning phase of the tests to the actual blast site itself, showing the audience how to minimize their own exposure in the event of an atomic attack. The film also ...

CT Uses IT to Match Jobs with Students
from Revver - school Videos July 10, 2008
Author: employmentcros Added: Thu, 10 Jul 2008 00:34:42 -0800 Duration: 130A new data analysis software system in Connecticut searches online job listings in order to help colleges identify the skills students need to find jobs in todays market. The project uses a web crawler that scours online listings in the financial services and insurance industries, then sends that information to specialized software built specifically for this effort. Ultimately, the data collected is sent to colleges to help them develop relevant curriculum for their job-seeking students. The state of Connecticut used part of a $2.7 million US Department of Labor training grant to develop what is seen as a model project for other states. The state called upon Skillproof, a Bridgeport, CT based labor research organization, for its web crawling technology with data analytics software designed by IBM, Pace University of New York.. Already, the project has proven to be worthwhile. The data collected by the software showed that there were a large number of unfilled openings for high-paying insurance actuarial jobs. When looking for actuaries, employers look primarily for analytic and communication skills. With this information in hand, Connecticut schools were able to respond immediately by expanding their curriculum to teach the specific skills associated with actuarial work. Developers of this software system hope that the success in Connecticut will encourage other states to utilize the system and fill niches in all industries by identifying the skills students need to find high-paying jobs in todays market.

Update: Dept. of Homeland Security weighs forcing passengers to wear stun gun bracelets on airplanes
from Gadling July 08, 2008
Filed under: Activism, United States, Airlines, Video, Airports, Consumer Activism Back in March, Gadling blogged about a firearm training system, Lamperd, which had patented a bracelet that worked like a stun gun when activated. At the time, Lamperd was lobbying the Transportation Security Administration to make it mandatory for all airline passengers to wear one, with the thinking that it was the best way to thwart a terrorist. Well, here's an update. The Department of Homeland Security, ever the shepherds watching over their flocks, appears to be seriously weighing making this bracelet mandatory and has sent a letter to Lamperd encouraging the company to draft a formal proposal for integrating its bracelet into flight security. That's right. Your tax dollars are funding the R Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
