The Quirkles KOLR 10 Density Dan Experiment
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 25, 2008
Density Dan, who is one of The Quirkles, KOLR 10, and Terri Johnson demonstrate density through a fun science experiment using raw eggs on the KOLR 10 morning news show. Also see how to make your own ocean in a bottle that demonstrates density among different liquids as well. The Quirkles books are an educational series that offer a fresh new way to integrate literacy and science at school or at home. Each book is full of vocabulary builders, character education lessons, and two related science experiments that allow for hands on activities, helping to reinforce the topics that were just read. The series was created by teachers, and each story teaches/reinforces the phonetic sounds that serve as the building blocks for reading, while also making science--earth, physical, and life--fun to learn.

Downtown Development
from The Conversation Podcast May 30, 2008
The Seattle Department of Planning and Development is unveiling its Susan McLain strategy this week. The plan would add more homes and employers into some of the city's oldest neighborhoods: Pioneer Square, the International District, and Little Saigon. Proposed land use changes would make room for 6,000 new housing units and enough office space to support 16,000 additional jobs. We'll talk to the city planners who crafted the concept. And we also want to hear from you. For residents in south downtown: what do you think of the plan? Does it strike the right balance between development and preservation of your neighborhood's current character? Do the relaxed height restrictions go too far? Or not far enough? Call in.

Insidermedicine in 60 - April 17, 2008
from YouTube :: Tag // copenhagen April 17, 2008
From Copenhagen - Taking vitamins on a daily basis may not help you live longer, and may even raise the risk of death. In a meta-analysis of 67 randomized clinical trials and data from over 200,000 subjects, taking vitamins did not have an overall positive effect on longevity. Vitamin A was shown to raise mortality by 16%, beta-carotene by 7% and vitamin E by 4%. From Connecticut - Those taking medications called loop diuretics for hypertension or heart disease may be at higher risk of developing weak bones. In a study of over 3,200 men over age 65, those who took loop diuretics had a 2.5 fold higher risk for loss of bone mineral density. This may be attributed to increased urinary excretion. And finally, from Ireland - Self-monitoring for non-insulin treated type 2 diabetes is more likely to lead to depression than long-term health benefits. Researchers discovered that patients have a tendency to find the process intrusive and uncomfortable, and were unable to find any significant effect of self-monitoring on blood glucose levels. The study suggests that self-monitoring may not be a cost-effective use of resources that could be allocated to other areas of diabetes care. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.
