Fox Signs On for a Live-Action 'Cowboy Bebop'Fox Signs On for a Live-Action 'Cowboy Bebop'
from Cinematical
July 23, 2008

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi I have some bad news for you. According to iFMagazine, Fox has given the green-light for a live-action version of the classic animated series, Cowboy Bebop. During the Television Critics Association press tour, producer Erwin Stoff let it slip that he now has a deal in place with Fox studios to bring the popular series to the big screen. Stoff told journalists, "I'm developing COWBOY BEBOP for Fox, but doing it as a live-action film, so I'm working on that at the moment, I'm really excited to be working on it, and it's in the really early stages. We just signed it the other day." For the uninitiated; Cowboy Bebop was the story of a group of bounty hunters and their adventures aboard their ship, Bebop, in the year 2071. The series was a huge success in both Japan and in the US, and even spawned an animated film back in 2002. For fans who might be worried that Cowboy could suffer the same fate as other anime-inspired flicks, there is a silver lining. Stoff promised that, "I have such an enormous admiration for its creators, that our first and foremost concern is going to be a real degree of faithfulness to the tone of the movie, to the mix of genres, and so on and so forth," -- I don't want to sound too cynical, but it's not like we haven't heard that one before. Now on to the more important question: Who should take over for Jet Black and the gang on the big screen? Sound off below... Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Franka Potente Escapes from TibetFranka Potente Escapes from Tibet

July 23, 2008

Filed under: Drama, Foreign Language, Independent, Casting, Deals, Scripts, Cinematical Indie It was a bummer to learn that Franka Potente was backing out of Pope Joan back in May, but it looks like she's found herself another weighty gig to add to her plate. Variety reports that she has signed on to star in a new German drama called Flucht aus Tibet, otherwise known as Escape from Tibet. The film, which is based on a true story, will be the big-screen debut for writer and director Maria Blumencron. Heading out of Che Guevara territory, Potente is moving over to Tibet to play Judy Cronenberg. The woman was a press photographer who led "a group of refugee Tibetan children over the Himalayas to safety nine years ago." There's nothing more being said about the story, which seems to be surprisingly free from the Internet (anyone know the details?), but it is a big German project. The film has received FFF Bayern's largest film funding -- $1.1 million. It should be a little bit of time before we get to see Tibet, but in the meantime, of course, we can watch her play Tania in Steven Soderbergh's The Argentine and Guerilla. Peter 'Hancock' Berg Will Take on HerculesPeter 'Hancock' Berg Will Take on Hercules

July 23, 2008

Filed under: Action, Deals, Universal, Comic/Superhero/Geek When you've made a very modern tale of a troubled man struggling to live with his super powers, what's left but to tackle a mythical yet tormented Greek hero? Peter Berg, who directed Will Smith to box office success in Hancock, will reboot one ot the original superheroes, Hercules, according to Variety. Hercules: The Thracian Wars, a five-issue comic book series by Steve Moore issued in May by Radical Publishing, will provide the source material. Ryan Condal, recently tapped to adapt Warren Ellis' comic mini-series/graphic novel Ocean, will write the script; Berg will direct and co-produce. The plot synopsis for the series describes Hercules as a "tormented soul ... neither god nor man." When the King of Thrace hires him "to train his men to become the greatest army of all time," Herc and his buddies are prompted to consider whey they have such a ruthless, bloodthirsty reputation. Berg intends to stay true to the "conflicts and redemption" in Moore's character-driven comic book series. When another project about Hercules was announced last year, Christopher Campbell questioned if there had ever been a decent Hercules movie. (He ran down most of them.) So, three questions: (1) Is the comic book any good? (2) Is Berg the right director to reboot Herc? (3) Who could play the muscular Greek hero without making people laugh at him? Filed under: Comedy, Deals, Scripts When Ian Holm chased ambulances, so to speak, as Mitchell Stevens in The Sweet Hereafter, there was a certain amount of class to it. Yes, he was looking for lawsuits, but Holm managed to bring some heart to the role. But what would Sacha Baron Cohen do? I think it's safe to say that he'll have an entirely different technique as a personal injury lawyer; and hopefully one that doesn't put him in a one-piece thong again. Variety reports that Fox Atomic has picked up a pitch written by Peter Baynham (Cohen's Borat co-writer) called Accidentes, which Baron Cohen will produce and possibly star in. It will focus on "a lawyer of Latin descent who transforms from contingency attorney to hero of the working class when he helps an immigrant win a judgment against his wealthy employer after a landscaping mishap. He also becomes the enemy of L.A.'s power elite." I'd be surprised if Sacha didn't take on this role, but I imagine it will all come down to timing as he's also got some Sherlock Holmes action on the way and a Dinner for Shmucks. But if he can't do it, who could? Freddie Rodriguez? Permalink | Email this | Comments
M. Night Says: What I Really Want to Do is ProduceM. Night Says: What I Really Want to Do is Produce
from Cinematical
July 22, 2008

Filed under: Thrillers, Deals, Cinematical Indie Fans of the world's most famous writer-director based in Philadelphia need not fear. Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan is not abandoning his creative work as a writer and director in favor of restricting himself to production duties. He has, however, formed a new partnership to produce one thriller per year for three years, according to Variety. M. Night "typically generates more movie ideas than he can execute." The terms of his deal with Media Rights Capital (MRC) mean that M. Night will "create the stories and ideas for the films and pick the writers and directors; MRC will finance." This won't affect his next directorial project, The Last Airbender, which is still set for release by Paramount in 2010. My first thought was that M. Night is following in the footsteps of Steven Spielberg. You might remember that Spielberg created the TV series Amazing Stories in part because he had so many story ideas that he couldn't do himself. He ended up writing or developing 29 stories (out of 45 episodes). Interestingly, Eric Kohn asked M. Night in an interview last month if it wouldn't be easier for him to "go the independent route." Even though the filmmaker said he's "never had an issue with studios," this sounds like a big step in the independent direction. And here's a quote that might warm the heart of anyone, including myself, who has been cool about his recent work: "Working with the next wave of innovative filmmakers will teach me many things that I can bring to my own writing/directing and give my stories the opportunity to be brought to the screen in a stunning way." Tobey Maguire Recreating Brown v. Board of EducationTobey Maguire Recreating Brown v. Board of Education

July 21, 2008

Filed under: Drama, Casting, Deals At first blush, this has all the marks of the sort of tepid, respectful, boring prestige picture that's normally a huge turn-off. Director Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) will reteam with Tobey Maguire for The Crusaders, a film about the lawyers who litigated the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education (of Topeka, but who keeps track?). That, of course, was when the Court unanimously held that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. Maguire will play idealistic young lawyer Jack Greenberg, who teamed with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and future Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall (Terrence Howard was rumored for that role, but that seems to have gone away) to fight the segregationists. This project has been kicking around for a while, and Topher Grace was previously attached to star in what is now Maguire's role. Ross and Maguire's Seabiscuit, which I thought was precisely the sort of unimaginative, tediously reverent historical Oscar-bait that the Academy loves but anyone with any taste can't stand, bored the pants off me. This sounds like a similar sort of project -- though on the other hand, having spent significant time venerating Brown v. Board in law school, I'm curious to see what Hollywood will do with this story. Sort of in the same way a geologist might be fascinated with The Core, y'know? Permalink | Email this | Comments

Producers Plan $90 Million Dollar 'Papillon' RemakeProducers Plan $90 Million Dollar 'Papillon' Remake

July 18, 2008

Filed under: Drama, Independent, Deals, Remakes and Sequels They have no actors, screenwriter, or director attached, but a group of producers has already figured out the budget for their planned remake of a 1973 prison drama: $90 million. The original film, Papillon, starred Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman as criminals trying to escape from Devil's Island, a French penal colony located in South America. According to Variety, Spanish production company Atlantia Canarias recently closed a deal for the rights to the autobiography of Henri Charriere, whose best-selling book served as the basis for Papillon. The company has teamed up with veteran Los Angeles-based producers Branko Lustig (Gladiator, American Gangster) and John J. Kelly (Into the Wild, The Black Dahlia). Most of the financing has already been arranged through a Canary Islands tax investment vehicle, whereby taxpayers "earmark part of their payments for film and TV investment." It's been several years since I've seen Papillon, but it felt very low-key and, frankly, drab and unexciting. Writing in 1973, Roger Ebert wasn't very impressed: "You know something has gone wrong when you want the hero to escape simply so that the movie can be over." The original film had an estimated budget of $12 million. Considering the remake's budget, I imagine the producers have set aside a good portion of that for two big male stars, and probably a star director. Does this remake stir any interest? Who could put on the prison clothes worn by Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Danny DeVito Going Back Behind the CameraDanny DeVito Going Back Behind the Camera

July 16, 2008

Filed under: Comedy, Casting, Deals, Family Films, Newsstand I have a soft spot for nearly everything Danny DeVito's directed. Death to Smoochy was a waste of a cast and a concept, but most everything else -- The War of the Roses, Matilda, and yes, even the underrated Duplex (I haven't seen Throw Momma from the Train in forever, but toss that one in too) -- has a dark, unforgiving sensibility that I really appreciate. For one thing, I'm pretty sure that DeVito is the only filmmaker to truly get what Roald Dahl was all about. DeVito's next directing project, and his first for the big screen since Duplex flopped in 2003, will be an adaptation of The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, a young adult book by a dude named Avi (yes, just Avi). It's about a 13 year-old girl who's crossing the Atlantic on her own in 1832 and gets caught in the middle of a mutiny. Saoirse Ronan, Morgan Freeman and Pierce Brosnan are attached to star. The funny thing is, I read The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle at some point while traversing the middle school netherworld back in the mid-to-late 90's, but I'll be damned if I remember a single thing about it. (The plot does sound vaguely familiar. I think there might be a parrot involved, but I'm not sure.) To Kill a Mockingbird it ain't. But if DeVito (who also wrote the screenplay) can give it some character, I'm down. Permalink | Email this | Comments
Who's Writing the 'Iron Man' Sequel?Who's Writing the 'Iron Man' Sequel?

July 16, 2008

Filed under: Deals, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek Oddly enough we're told it's Justin Theroux, who's making his screenwriting debut with Tropic Thunder a bit later this summer. Yes, that would be the same Justin Theroux who played the immortal role of Adam Kesher in Mulholland Dr. and the badass Irishman Seamus O'Grady in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. The trade piece breaking the story gives no hint of why Marvel Studios thought of Theroux for the project, and I couldn't find out anywhere else, but I'm sure someone will give an interview soon enough. Last year, Theroux directed an indie called Dedication from someone else's script, starring Tom Wilkinson and Billy Crudup. It got mediocre reviews and I missed it, despite my eagerness to watch anything with Wilkinson. If a career change is what the actor was after, he certainly got it: writing Iron Man 2 is a pretty plum gig. Can you imagine? Of course, I tend to doubt that the sequel -- which is set for release in April, 2010 -- is going to wind up with just one screenwriter when all is said and done. Theroux's draft will probably be reworked, retouched and polished a dozen times. But it's cool that the actor-turned-director-turned-scribe will at least take a first crack. Filed under: Comedy, Drama, Romance, Deals, RumorMonger, Fandom, Newsstand, Remakes and Sequels I remember, during an advance screening of The Promotion, I was standing in the movie theater and there were women everywhere. This was about a week or so after Sex and the City came out -- and it was right smack in the middle of the week -- but there were still tons of women, all done up and what not. I joked to my friend that this "tons of nice looking women standing in a movie theater lobby in the middle of a random weekday without any men" was kinda similar to a lunar eclipse, in that it rarely happens. If I were a dating councelor, I'd have recommended my male clients to get the hell over to a Sex and the City screening pronto. Luckily, single men will most likely have another opportunity to mingle with the SATC crowd over a tub of popcorn and a sexy Dr. Pepper as Entertainment Weekly reports a sequel to Sex and the City is already in development and is apparently being fast-tracked by Warner Brothers (New Line put out the first flick). Michael Lombardo, president of HBO's programming group, told folks during a press tour that "there's a lot of energy behind doing another SATC movie." However, one inside source claims Sarah Jessica Parker and her lady friends are a little hesitant because they don't want to rush into things and disappoint fans. Assuming they add another villain to the mix so that it's not just Spacey's Lex Luthor, I'm sure everything will be fine. Oh wait, wrong franchise. So who wants another Sex and the City movie? Urban Monster Movie 'Night Crew' Coming From 'Tremors' GangUrban Monster Movie 'Night Crew' Coming From 'Tremors' Gang

July 10, 2008

Filed under: Action, Comedy, Horror, Deals, Cinematical Indie Did you like Tremors? I absolutely loved that movie. What a great combination: characters who were rough around the edges but still funny and likable, jolting, fast-paced direction by Ron Underwood, and very decent special effects, all in service of a solid script by S. S. Wilson and Brent Maddock that didn't take itself too seriously. (Patrick Walsh wrote a loving appreciation last year.) Dozens of people have made modern versions of the 1950s-style monster movies -- the original "animals gone wild" flicks -- but Tremors is one of the very few that succeeded in capturing the right spirit on all counts. Tremors inspired three sequels and a television series on the Sci-Fi Network. Now the key creative talent involved has decided to reunite to make a different type of action movie. Night Crew is described as "a fast-moving monster tale full of quirky characters, scary moments, and laugh-out-loud humor, but this time in an urban setting," according to production company Stampede Entertainment. Wilson and Maddock have written the script, Underwood is on board to return to the director's chair, and Nancy Roberts will produce, as she did the three sequels. Obviously, the premise allows room for plenty of fun ideas. I'm always up for monstrous mayhem in urban settings; could we dare hope that this might riff on the Cloverfield / Godzilla movies, but with an actual sense of humor? I'm looking forward to hearing more, especially about the cast. [ Via Bloody Disgusting ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Deals, Newsstand, Miramax Well, I guess they don't call The New York Times the 'Paper of Record' for nothing; because not only are they the final word in journalism, but now Hollywood has come knocking for script ideas. Variety has announced the latest Times film deal, proving that the paper is going full steam into the movie business. Monika brought us an update on a Miramax deal for the film rights to the article, This Strange Thing Called Prom, but that is only the tip of the iceberg for the Old Grey Lady. Now that the newspaper and magazine business has become what they call "economically challenged," everyone is on the hunt for some new revenue streams and Hollywood seems to be paying off. The current deals will see NYT writers share in the profits of the movie deals. But unlike the past, the newspaper will be the broker of the deals, instead of just subsidizing the articles, only to watch the writer hit a big pay day after optioning the piece. The latest deal with Miramax marks the 15th property (that's right: 15) that the NYT has sold to studios since it first signed up with ICM. Some of the other high profile deals included a football vehicle for Jack Black, a political suspense tale that was purchased by Paramount for Tom Cruise (but I guess we all know how that particular deal probably turned out) and the recently announced J.J Abrams thriller. But the NYT is not alone in looking for bucks on the big screen; high profile papers like The Wall Street Journal have also been getting in on the act. So is it official? Has Hollywood become so strapped for fresh ideas that they can only make it to their front doorstep for something new? Sound off below on this trend and tell us what you think. Filed under: Horror, Independent, Deals, Cinematical Indie What's worrying everybody today? The ecology! Going green! What's a dependable movie genre that can be made for a low budget and attract the all-important teen/young adult market? The horror! Going red! Now what if you combine the two? Then you might have The Colony, described as an "eco-horror tale" by our friends at Variety. The report says that Participant Film has set up a deal based on a pitch by Stacy Title and Jonathan Penner, a filmmaking couple who previously made an Academy Award-nominated short and two features together back in the 90s. I didn't care for The Last Supper, directed by Title, a would-be black comedy featuring Cameron Diaz, Bill Paxton, and an ensemble cast stuck in a cabin in the woods, and I didn't see Let the Devil Wear Black, so I have no idea what to expect. If it helps in any way with our anticipation, Penner is a veteran actor and also appeared on the TV reality show Survivor: Cook Islands. No plot details for The Colony have been released -- though a bunch of other movies have used that title, including a science fiction thriller set to start filming in January -- so we can let our imaginations run free. Will Penner use his experience on Survivor to inform the tale? What's your ideal eco-horror plot? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Deals, Celebrities and Controversy You remember that Jan De Bont flick John Cusack signed on for ages ago? The one that was going to give us a 51-minute chase scene? It was appropriately named Stopping Power, and it had so much flipping power that it stopped its own production back in October. Co-star Melissa George then swore it was still in the works, but that never went anywhere, and now Cusack is pissed. TMZ reports that he's filed a lawsuit against Intermedia Film Equities USA (you can see the documents on the site). According to the actor, the company convinced him to star in the ill-fated film, guaranteed that he would be paid $4.5 million, even if the movie didn't get made, and finally, that all of his expenses would be paid, which includes $50k to cover the cost of having his staff on location. Cusack's lawyer, Marty Singer, says that John got his butt to Germany, started production, and then was told that the company couldn't afford the guarantee. So, they're claiming the company fraudulently made these promises, and then wanted to renegotiate for a lower amount after ensnaring him. Johnny is looking for $5,600,000 plus punitives. Will John win? Or, will Film Equities have the final stopping power? Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Deals Nothing really happened when Spike Lee was set to remake Stalag 17 for the stage last year, but now he's reportedly heading to Broadway again. However, this time it's in a cinematic capacity. Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider reported last week that Lee is grabbing his cameras and spending part of July filming the Tony-winning Passing Strange. Originally developed at the Sundance Institute's Theatre Lab, the musical focuses on "a young black musician who sets off on a journey to find 'the real' after being raised in a church-going middle-class Los Angeles neighborhood." I have a sneaking suspicion that the guy wouldn't have to go far. Anyway, Lee will film two performances with an audience, and a third without, and while no distribution agreements have been reached, there's talk that the recording will hit cable television. (Variety investigated the report and their sources say an announcement about the production will hit on Wednesday.) While recorded theater is not the same as the in-person experience, I'm happy to see more of New York's theater making its way out to the country/world. Joseph Papp did a lot of it in the late seventies and early eighties, and you might have seen some of them, like A Midsummer Night's Dream with William Hurt and Christine Baranski, or the theatrical version of Pirates of Penzance, which came before the film and featured the same cast (Kevin Kline, Lindsa Ronstadt, etc).
