Kunstler about new urbanism / urban planning on Ted Talks

Kunstler about new urbanism / urban planning on Ted Talks

For Raymond and Mr. Weagel. TEDTalks: James Howard Kunstler (2004) video Watch movie Original post on May 11, 2007 from TEDTalks (video): (RSS feed) In James Howard Kunstler s view, public spaces should be inspired centers of civic life and the physical manifestation of the common good. Instead, he argues, what we have in America is a nation of places not worth caring about. Reengineering our cities will involve more radical change than we are prepared for, Kunstler believes, but our hand will be forced by earth crises stemming from our national lifestyle. Life in the mid-21st century, Kunstler says, is going to be about living locally. (Via Mefeedia)

of blandlands and lumiere

of blandlands and lumiere

from evilvlog on September 09, 2007
Duration: 0
Re: shooting full force: Road chimney - a blandland I m taking offense to the use of my private quips (and me) as a straw man, a whipping boy and a troll which produce insecurities and defensiveness within this community which I love. Not great offense but only offense because I wasn t notified of it s disembodiment and re-context so I and others could revel in and enjoy in the resultant whipping with a bit of lightheartedness. Furthermore I want to say like it or not lumiere and blandlands do compete. They compete if only in a purely memeological sense. As meme s in close proximity they both have gravity and as such they are competing fundamentally as all memes do for attention. Furthermore competition is not the boogyman that people make it out to be. Competition is healthy, and it helps define and most importantly create APPRECIATION. It is the presence of lumiere which makes blandlands capable of being appreciated by more people and enjoyed by more people and inversely the presence of blandlands can help to establish the subtlety and nuanced language with which lumiere speaks. The two memes by their existence and proximity heighten each others quality. Not to go too far off on a tangent here, but this is a subject which I love. There is a saying in the design world that the appreciation of good design is not inherent and it is very much true of art as well. Do you ever wonder why art and design is attracted to markets like new york. Or fashion to Paris? To say it s purely economics would be a vast understatement. The creation of a conversation, of a language in art, design and fashion requires the proximity of other art, design and fashion. Appreciation must be cultivated, new language must be created to heighten the discourse. This is precisely why I love the vlogosphere this core videoblogging community and this medium. Blandlands and lumiere are the personification, two examples of the very forefront of this evolution of language / aethetic / ideology. My love for these two things and many others it quite the contrary to how my statements are somehow interpreted and indeed how evilvlog is sometimes interpreted. If you are offended by something ask yourself am I seeing the whole story . Often times offense is just a differense of perspective. Evilvlog is not evil it is is an evelutionary virtual log. Humor makes light of these perspectives. The original post: Blowing off steam As Andreas and I work on a manifesto about the Lumiere videos, someone brought up the idea that we re competing with Blandlands, an exceptional site in its own right and entirely different, in my mind, than the Lumiere videos. In fact, despite having no real relationship w/ the Blandlands creator, I have nothing but respect for his work there and elsewhere, and Andreas further suggested that I make that clear on behalf of us both. I find competition in this arena to be a rather perverse notion. Since when is art or even simple communication a rivalry? Not only is that a dull evolution of the creative process; it has no foreseeable benefits in a case such as this. While friendly opposition has been known to propel folks (myself included) forward at times, the idea that anyone is fighting for best compilation of tedious (or inspiring, depending on how you view it) footage is ridiculous. So, let it be known that contention is not our aim; rather, I believe we re all just trying to encourage folks to make more observational media. I also captured this footage several weeks ago with the explicit intent to submit it to Valdez. Lumieres, in whatever way you interpret them, are one thing; refreshingly dull landscapes are quite another. Others responses: From rupert of twittervlog: I don t think you need to worry about anybody else having the same thought - it s like that person made a connection between the two things in their brain and then felt the need to make it into a confrontation, rather than stop and think about it for a second. (silent snicker. I am your boogyman rupert. :) I don t particularly feel like arguing anything or staking out territory for either, but apart from Blandlands subject matter, one other obvious difference (so obvious it makes me laugh) is Sound. Perhaps that person didn t think about how essential sound is to Blandlands. Or how its absence is just as essential to the conception and execution of a Lumiere. starts to transcend the straw man argument and examine the subtleties, or not so subtle distinctions between lumiere and blandlands. :) Great that you got an excuse to highlight Blandlands, though - and Valdez s other sites. Links you didn t include were http://aaronvaldez.com and http://valdezatron.com - all full of his genius. Here Here! Lumieres are giving us an excuse to take moving snapshots the way we might take a photograph but of things whose beauty lies partly in their movement. Reminds me of an Ani di Franco song - Evolve - where she has a couple of lines about realising why she doesn t look good in photographs: because she has the kind of beauty that moves. Here. Here. I ve summarized up some thoughts on the subject: Video is the new photo. B s response: The comment about competition came from a private conversation w/ another media/videoblogger enthusiast who, like Rupert mentioned, couldn t perhaps think outside the box and immediately put the two unrelated projects together in his mind. We thought this could happen again and felt the need to clarify before the fact. Couldn t perhaps think outide the box? this sort of hurt me, partly because nothing could be further from the truth, but mostly because it makes me realize I ve not been keeping in touch with with all my friends in vloglandia and making new ones. I haven t gotten a chance to meet and talk with all the brilliant B s and meeting new brilliant minds been to distracted to resting on the connections I have. I know in her heart of hearts B (I hope you don t mind if I call you that I sort of like the nickname :) probably has a good sense of humor about the inherent irony in wielding strong straw arguments to make subtle points. In fact she makes her point in a similar nature in which I made the original comment in a private conversation with andreas. Which is to say using the absurdity and irony of the argument to break the hypnotic trance and get at what lies underneath. My comment was completely self mocking though it s obvious she does not realize who said it or why? She s in fact using my comment and me with it in a similar context to which I d made it. To point out the subtle and inherent differences in the two memes. She is just taking it to a whole new level. I m a little sad that it was used in such a negative light which can potentially hurt the conversation, putting vloggers on the defensive when in fact we need to be less jaded and less reactionary but all in all it s nothing I haven t already gotten over. I just hope that vloggers will seek to define themselves not by reacting, but by creating and that things like this teach people to take everything with a little bit of humor. And, moreso for us (as much as I feel comfortable speaking for Andreas), because there is so much talk about monetizing and general competition at times in what was hoped (at least for me/us) to be a community of support more than a group of adversaries, we like to make it clear that we don t support that kind of negative rivalry but rather hope we can all push one another in fair and effective ways towards better creation without harming ourselves or one another (we hope the same, obviously, for everyone s respective work). The inherent irony. Putting trolling subject matter on such display perpetuates the very negativity none of us want to see. This is the worst thing for me to see my own private comments being used in such a hurtful way. ;( Now, my own response in bshoot s blog comments: disclaimer: some spelling, mistypes, and grammar errors were fixed for your enjoyment I m outing myself as the speaker of this unspeakable atrocity. While there is a slim chance this comment could have been made by someone other than myself I believe it was most likely me who spoke it. Andreas and I constantly talk of memes, themes, genres and other such evolutions in the vloggersation. It doesn t just sound like something I d say. I specifically recall quipping about the relation of blandlands and lumiere the way I often quip about the absurdity of such things as monetization and competition in this space. I find humor such a very useful tool for getting quickly past the misconceptions, hi-lighting key distinctions, and breaking down blocks and mentalities that prevent us from seeing things as they truly are. In short such comments are a way of transcending the limited perspectives perpetuated by good old american capitalism on every subject. Vlogging exists well outside of the realm of traditional video based media like TV and therefore well outside of the realm of capitalism and indeed the realm of juvenile egoist notions. I d like to add that is precisely because vlogging has such a low economical barrier of entry that it can transcend many of these traditional economic traits to become art. There s a quote somewhere I ve often quoted it, but obviously not enough lately that in order for a medium to truly become art it needs to become as cheap as a number 2 pencil. It s largely because the economic barriers have collapsed that we enjoy the freedom to use video for everyday communication and to elevate it to the level of art. The medium is the message who is john gault and all that cryptic stuff I must say because to write it out would take a book. It (vlogging) can be simply communication. It can be art. Indeed both blandlands and lumiere represent for me the things I love best about it. They are conversations of a very subtle, nuanced and abstracted nature. Conversations of a purely aesthetical nature. Wether the suburban aesthetic in blandlands or the appreciation of simple light and motion in lumiere. And I see rupert and Adam Quirk commenting here too and condemning this straw man comment and supposed boogyman which is actually my own disembodied and out of context statement. (How odd.) Rupert s Twittervlog and Adam s projects including thepan.org and Wreck Salvage are two fine examples. Twittervlog to me represents one of the purest examples of vlogging as simple interpersonal communication. It doesn t hurt that Rupert has great enthusiasm and charisma either. Adam quirks work and collaborations with others come in a long line of purely artistic explorations of the medium. Switching gears. I started to write a response to this several times. I think the below quote best summarizes it. the idea that anyone is fighting for best compilation of tedious (or inspiring, depending on how you view it) footage is ridiculous. I believe I may have even used the term stealing the thunder . :) This quote is precisely the point of my humor. To point to the obvious absurdities. Two abstract aesthetical meme s competing with one another like two juveniles. I m glad to see the straw man taken to it s logical end, taken out and beaten. This statement taken completely out of context shows no ignorance of vlogging. No bigotry toward art, aesthetic and everything that lies outside the realm of traditional darwinistic and capitalistic theory. It shows a sharp dry cutting humor, at worst juvenile humor. Peace and love. -mike And once more for the record Great video bshoot! I know i don t comment enough (nearly at all) but I ve been loving your lumieres lately.
