The Dalai Lama appeared all over Seattle during the 5 day Seeds of Compassion conference. Tonight on Speaker's Forum, we'll bring you his entire speech from Qwest Field on Saturday, April 12. The day's events included ridiculously gorgeous weather, fifty thousand attendees, a choir with more than a thousand children and a band made up of teachers who played punk rock songs for kids. The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, speaks about compassion and non violent dialogue. He says the twentieth century was one of bloodshed. But, he says this one is just beginning. And it's our moral responsibility to make it a century of dialogue.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is a Nobel Peace Laureate, international peacemaker, human rights crusader, and a delightful man with an easy laugh. He visited Seattle this week to share the stage with the Dalai Lama. Archbishop Tutu granted just one interview during his visit, to Steve Scher and Weekday. He shares an ecumenical prayer and his interfaith vision. The Dalai Lama wraps up five days in Seattle today. His schedule included a talk to thousands of children yesterday at Seattle's Key Arena. KUOW's Phyllis Fletcher reports.

The Dalai Lama donned the purple and gold robe of the University of Washington yesterday. He was on campus to receive an honorary degree. He spoke with university students and faculty on the importance of non violence. Outside, hundreds of people staged a noisy protest against his appearance. KUOW's Deborah Wang has that story.

The Dalai Lama continued his Seattle visit yesterday (Saturday) giving a speech to more than fifty thousand people at Qwest Field. He's here for a five-day Seeds of Compassion conference. KUOW's Sara Lerner has more.

In his first public appearances since arriving in Seattle for a five-day conference on compassion, the Dalai Lama made no mention of the situation in Tibet. Instead, he welcomed what he said was a new scientific interest in human emotion. (April 11)

Are we losing our ability to write? Colleges and corporations spend billions in remedial writing classes. A recent nationwide test found that only about a third of 8th grade students are proficient writers. And it gets worse in high school. Only a quarter of high school students are proficient.
