The company says most of the cuts will be accomplished through early retirements, attrition and voluntary separation programs. However, Chrysler said involuntary layoffs will be considered if it fails to meet its targets. ---------------------------They're lovin it. Consumers helped bring McDonald's back to profitability. Supersize spending at the hamburger chain brought its quarterly earnings to just under $1.2 billion. The results appeared to ease some concerns that McDonald's will suffer by the slowdown in consumer spending.-------------------------Bill Gates and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will pour $375 million into a global effort to cut smoking. The philanthropists, who have a combined worth of more than $70 billion, say the money will help efforts in developing countries where tobacco use is highest. GM said the moves would raise $15bn to help cover losses, including $10bn from internal cost-cutting. GMs North America division has 40,000 salaried employees. The hurried restructuring is GM's second in just six weeks due to high gas prices, weakening auto sales and from customers steering away from SUVs and gas guzzling trucks. Pulling policy from rhetoric when listening to a politician isn't always easy. Good thing we got it on tape! Here are the fourteen concrete "I will" statements I found in McCain's economic policy speech in Denver on July 7th. 1. Make it easier for small businesses to grow and create jobs 2. Won't raise taxes-- will cut them where he can 3. Raising taxes in a bad economy eliminates jobs-- won't let that happen 4. Will double the child tax deduction from $3,500 to $7,000 for every dependent in every family 5. Will expand markets for goods and services, as with Crocs, the shoe company 6. Will reform unemployment insurance and retrain workers using community colleges-- will make up difference in wages between a worker's temporary job while they train for a better on and their old job 7. Do a stem to stern review of government, modernize how it does business, and save billions 8. Will veto bills with pork and shame those involved with them 9. Produce more of our own oil and gas to pressure market prices down 10. Create at least 45 new Nuclear Power plants, creating 700,000 jobs (including construction) 11. Many of these job cuts and transfers were due to Johnson and & Johnson and Schering-Plough Corporations plans for restructuring the company Schering-Plough, based in Kenilworth, is cutting 500 jobs. New Brunswick-based J&J is eliminating 22 jobs at its Ortho Biotech unit in Bridgewater, shifting another 260 to its Centocor unit in Horsham, Pa., and cutting another 267 Ortho Biotect jobs outside New Jersey.
