from YouTube :: Videos by AssociatedPress June 04, 2008
SelectPlusSpirit Airlines Ponders CutbacksSpirit Airlines Ponders CutbacksThe Associated PressSpirit Airlines may lay off or move up to 60 percent of its flight attendants and 45 percent of its pilots in an effort to cut costs and deal with soaring fuel prices, according to letters released Tuesday by union leaders. (June 4)More bad news on the way for summer travelers as yet another carrier says it may be making substantial cutbacks. Florida-based Spirit Airlines says it could begin laying off up to 60 percent of its flight attendants and 45 percent of its pilots---A move that would allow the company to close its hubs in New York, Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, Puerto Rico. SOT- Richards "I think it's terrible, because I fly Spirit all the time." The proposed layoffs at Spirit are the most recent example of the industry struggling to cope with fuel prices that have soared to record highs in recent months. SOT- Larsen "The fuel prices right now are just ridiculous, you know. I mean , everyone's just making changes to their everyday lives just to get around, so And this is obviously one of them."In May, American Airlines announced it would be cutting its flight capacity by nearly 12 percent after summer. SOT- Meyer "A day doesn't got by that you don't see some, some business saying, announcing layoffs. Whether it's the automobile industry or whether it's the airline industry or whether it's the, you know, cellular telephone industry, whatever it is. Everyone is feeling the pinch right now." And finally United Airlines plans to retire dozens of their least fuel efficient aircrafts ---- grounding 94 Boeing 737 jets The cuts at United are expected to take place through 2009. ___ ___, The Associated Press. Medi-Cal Cutbacks Affect Low Income Patients
from Southern California News March 10, 2008
Sarah Varney: California's slated to spend $39 billion dollars next year on Medi-Cal, so low-income residents will have health care. It's the second-largest expense behind education, which makes it an obvious target in lean times. Sarah Varney of the California Report says recent budget cuts off the backs of health care providers may push physicians to stop seeing poor patients altogether.

FAP752: Free stuff Friday, New England student loan troubles
from Financial Aid Podcast Daily Free Internet Radio On Demand March 07, 2008
FAP752: Free stuff Friday, New England student loan troubles Student Financial Aid News + Boston Globe: Amid a deepening credit squeeze and cutbacks in federal loan subsidies, New Hampshire s nonprofit student-loan agency said this week that it will no longer offer private loans. The Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority, which lent money to 42,000 college students last year, has so far failed to secure any financing for its loans, as skittish investors shy away from taking on debt. + NASFAA and Minnesota Public Radio: A report released by the National Consumer Law Center highlights the problem faced by students and recent graduates: steep tuition increases force students to take on more and more debt from private lenders. Then, a tight job market makes it hard for them to pay the loans back, Minnesota Public Radio reports. The private student loan market has exploded in the past five years and students are just now waking up to the long-term consequences, according to the center s staff attorney, Deanne Loonin. They re just not in the economic shape they hoped they would in. They re just not able to pay their loans. They have huge amounts of debt. It affects their credit. It affects their ability to build assets for the future, she says. Private lenders are not required to release information about default rates. But student surveys indicate a growing negative trend, Loonin says. In addition to higher tuition and persistently low federal loan limits, sophisticated marketing has greatly increased private lenders share of the market, she says.
