bmtv88 Your Lawn, Our Ocean
from CitizenReporter.org July 24, 2008
This video entry is to explain some recent goings-on as well as tell about a good friend who gave up growing a green lawn in suburbia. Around the same time he was telling me this, I had also visited the Jersey shore where there were reports of an dangerous explosion in the Jelly Fish population. The causes? Nitrogen from all the fertilizers people use on their lawns that washes into the ocean. Another cause, warm water from the Oyster Bay nuclear power plant nearby. My focus here is more on the fertilizer and energy wasted on lawn care versus the price we pay collectively for the damage done to the environment. This situation was very well illustrated by a recent edition of On Point from NPR. Wherever you live, I encourage you to stop watering the lawn, stop fertilizing, take a stand in your everyday life and change this rediculous and dangerous suburban tradition. Download Podcast Video

Mom’s Dilemma: Video
from Wildcast - African bush adventures live-blogged to a screen near you July 23, 2008
The hyaena den at dawn was surprisingly quiet. Usually the arrival of my vehicle gets the inquisitive little guys out to see what’s arrived. But there was no sign of them and I wonder if they haven’t moved den. Shortly a big mommy arrives and calls in the den entrance, a low growl. She’s calling her cubs to come and suckle. But her cubs are tiny and right now probably sound asleep. Call as she may she gets no response. And to make it worse she can’t go in there to wake them. The den is too small and specially so designed to keep out predators. So she decides to wait it out, but the sun soon gets too much and she leaves to find shade. I left the den too and less than a kilometre away was at the wild dog den. They’re still there. The adults shouted their abuses at me, and the pups were growling and hassling each other underground. I haven’t seen them now for about a week and no doubt they’ve grown somewhat. I’m really at a loss as to how to work with the dogs at the moment. I know sitting there I’ll just be putting added pressure on them and anyway wouldn’t get any footage. So I’ll have to wait till they move again. This will probably be when the pups are big enough not to be den bound any more, which could easily be in the next couple of weeks. It was back to the hyaena den at dusk and mom arrived just as the sun was setting. Again she called and again her cubs slept on! No doubt hunger will wake them as night falls. adventure, africa, african, animal, animal kingdom, animals, blog, blogumentary, bush, bush knowledge, clouds scenic, conservation, documentary, ecotraining, education, endangered species, experience, film, filmmaker, flickr, GLTP, gonarezhou, Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, hyaenas, hyena, malilangwe, narrowcasting, nature, Open Content Alliance, pamushana, peace parks, photo, photos, podcasting, predators, teach, video, wild dogs, wildcast, wildcasting, wilderness, wildlife, wildlife documentary, youtube, zimbabwe

China and the U.S.: Irreversibly intertwined
from China Business Blog and Podcast July 22, 2008
Download this podcast Download audio file (20080722_irreversibly_intertwined.mp3) With his new documentary for the Discovery Channel, The People s Republic of Capitalism, Ted Koppel shines a light on issues that aren t much of a revelation for seasoned China watchers. From the producers description of the show: The American and Chinese economies are irreversibly intertwined. The common complaint that the Chinese are taking jobs away from American workers is in many cases true. China s cheap and abundant labor attracts manufacturing from all over the world. Still, American economists estimate that the U.S. is as much as $70 billion richer each year because of its relationship with China something must be going right. A number of U.S. companies are enjoying huge success in China. General Motors is the market leader in China and is reaping attractive profits, a stark contrast to its U.S. market position. Profits from their China businesses are having a significant influence on the global financial health of many U.S. companies. In fact, recent research indicates that companies pursuing a dual strategy of participating in China s local market and exporting from China are achieving substantially higher profits than those firms only doing one form of China business. The economies of China and the U.S. are, as Koppel reminds us, inextricably intertwined with benefits for both sides. As Koppel s documentary shows, globalization isn t the boogeyman some make it out to be. There s certainly a positive give-and-take between China, the U.S. and, of course, other countries around the world. Those companies proactively exploiting these relationships are going to be the winners going forward.

Doing the Lambeth Walk
from Free Audio London Walks July 22, 2008
"The Lambeth Walk" is a song from the 1937 musical Me and My Girl (with book and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose and music by Noel Gay). The cockney lyrics are simple: Any time you're Lambeth Way Any evening, any day You'll find us all Doing the Lambeth Walk. Oi! Every little Lambeth pal With her little Lambeth pal You'll find 'em all Doing the Lambeth Walk. Oi! Lambeth is the area south of the River Thames around Waterloo Station where we start our walk. Waterloo is on the Northern, Bakerloo, Waterloo & City, and Jubilee lines as well as being a mainline station in zone 1. Exit the Underground from the Jubilee Line and turn into Waterloo Road towards the Old Vic Theatre. Turn into Lower Marsh and continue until you come to Archbishop's Park at the rear of Lambeth Palace, official London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury. After walking through the park we come to the redundant church of St Mary at Lambeth, home of the Tradescant Trust and the Museum of Garden History. From here we walk along the Albert Embankment by the River Thames with wonderful views of the North bank including the Houses of Parliament. We pass St Thomas's Hospital and Medical School named after the English martyr St Thomas a Becket, County Hall and the London Aquarium, the London Eye and the lion which used to stand by Hungerford Bridge before the demolition of the Lion Brewery. Just before the Royal Festival Hall we cross one of the Golden Jubilee foot bridges and the walk ends at Embankment (District & Circle lines) or Charing Cross (Bakerloo and Northern lines) both in Zone 1.
