El gol canadiense cayó al minuto 32, luego de que el portero mexicano Oswaldo Sánchez tuviera una salida a destiempo, para dejar pasar el esférico hasta el fondo de su marco. México fracasó en su intento por coronarse en la Copa Oro tras perder en la final frente a Estados Unidos por marcador de dos goles contra uno. Hugo Sánchez reconoce el avance futbolístico y niega que la derrota sea "dolorosísima" a pesar de los comentarios en la afición. Ahora se embarca rumbo a Venezuela para encarar la segunda competencia, la Copa América, debutando frente al campeón defensor Brasil. La problemática en el equipo nacional es evidente, más allá de la falta de futbol y de táctica o estrategia; los conflictos internos comienzan a verse reflejados en el terreno de juego y auguran un mal torneo para el Tricolor. Por su parte, Argentina llega como favorito sin descartar a los siempre peligrosos brasileños; también venezolanos y paraguayos pelearán al tú por tú por ser protagonistas en el certamen, mientras Colombia, Ecuador y Uruguay buscarán convertirse en la sorpresa del continente.

México continúa en la búsqueda por adjudicarse la Copa de Oro para cumplir con su primer compromiso internacional, recordando que de inmediato tendrá participación en la Copa América. El equipo de hugo Sánchez no ha mostrado buen futbol y sigue sin satisfacer a los aficionados que esperan mejoría en el rendimiento de los jugadores mexicanos. Sin duda, el conjunto Tricolor deberá superarse considerablemente si pretende disputarle el título al anfitrión, Estados Unidos. Por su parte, la Selección Sub-20 continúa su preparación rumbo al Mundial de la categoría tras las incorporaciones de Giovanni Dos Santos y Carlos Vela. También persiste el futbol de estufa al tiempo que los equipos se siguen reforzando de cara al Torneo Apertura 2007.
