On Wednesday s Countdown, Jonathan Turley gives his expert analysis on this epic fail as well as the latest attempt by the president to obstruct Congressional oversight by claiming executive privilege in the CIA/Plame leak investigation. As for Bush s executive privilege claims, Turley goes right for the jugular. Attorney General Michael Mukasey all but begged the president not to make him testify about Dick Cheney s role in the Plame case and has ignored a subpoena to appear to testify about the matter before Congress which Turley says should prompt Congress to charge him with Inherent Contempt. That s not likely to happen, and as Jonathan points out, Democrats who voted for Mukasey are now getting what they paid for: This is why, when Senators Shumer and Feinstein saved Mukasey s confirmation, this is what they purchased. And, what Congress needs to do, the only thing they can do, is bring back Inherent Contempt and to say they re going to start to exercise contempt on their own, that the deal is off. Attorney General Mukasey has broken a very long standing promise to be a faithful broker, to bring these cases to the grand jury - he won t. And Congress has a right to now say we re going back to doing this stuff ourselves.

But this kind of corruption is striking, even by the Bush administration s standards. The Sunday Times reports Stephen Payne, a Bush pioneer and a political appointee to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, was caught on tape offering access to key members of the Bush administration inner circle in exchange for six-figure donations to the private library being set up to commemorate Bush s presidency. In an undercover video, Payne is seen promising to arrange a meeting for an exiled leader of Krygystan with Dick Cheney or Condoleezza Rice. (Not President Bush because he doesn t meet with a lot of former Presidents these days, Payne says. I don t think he meets with hardly anyone. ) All it will take for him to arrange this high-level meeting, says Payne, is a couple hundred thousand dollars, or something like that. Specifically, Payne tells a Kazakh politician he knew as Eric Dos that Payne would come up with the exact budget, which would be somewhere between $600,000 and $750,000, with about a third of it going directly to the Bush library. The contribution would be a show of ‘we re interested, we re your friends, we re still friends. The TimesOnline piece makes no specific mention of the politician that Dos is representing, but both Benen and BooMan narrow it down to former Krygystan President Askar Akayev, and possibly a motive as well: (T)he prospective client who is being asked to pony up $600,000 - $750,000 ($200,000-$250,000 of which will go to the Bush Library) is former President Askar Akayev, as he is the only exiled former president of Kyrgyzstan in existence. Akayev s human rights record is mixed. For the region, it was better than average, but in the years just prior to his ouster he began to restrict and harass political and media freedoms. The Times of London sting operation is curious. The video shows a meeting between Stephen Payne, [who is a Bush pioneer, a political appointee to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, and a Senior Advance Representative traveling internationally in advance of and with President Bush and Vice President Cheney], an unidentified representative of Askar Akayev, and an undercover reporter who is surreptitiously videotaping the conversation. It appears that the latter two gentleman colluded in setting up the sting and that part of the agreement was that the Times would not mention Akayev s name or country in print. What possible motivation would Akayev have to embarrass the Bush administration? Let s look at who Akayev blamed for his ouster: The ousted Kyrgyzstan president, Askar Akayev, last night accused the US of being behind the anti-constitutional coup which forced him to flee the country last week, and said he wold only resign if given sufficient a guarantee of his personal safety. I believe we have what is known as payback time, ladies and gentlemen.

He shouldn t be allowed anywhere near the subject, and anyone who believes a word of what he says about it is a fool. Negotiation is not appeasement and there are zero parallels between simply opening up a diplomatic dialogue with Iran and the capitulation to Adolf Hitler in the Munich Agreement. It s a ridiculous assertion, especially considering that the Bush administration itself has negotiated with Libya and North Korea, yet Iran s previous offers to put everything, including its nuclear program, on the table and peacefully negotiate have been completely ignored even after Iran had been an important ally of the coalition against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Oliver North, just like John McCain and other conservatives, don t even have a clue what they are talking about. Apparently no one in this administration ever thought to ask Bush s own Sec. of Defense, Neville Chamberlain Robert Gates, for his opinion: We need to figure out a way to develop some leverage with respect to the Iranians and then sit down and talk with them. If there s going to be a discussion, then they need something, too. We can t go to a discussion and be completely the demander with them not feeling that they need anything from us. Exactly.

What s more, they detail how Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was able to immunize all current and former Iraqi officials, including himself and his family, from any further investigation or prosecution, the State Dept s refusal to cooperate with any investigation, the ostracism and apparent abandonment of the one Iraqi official who braved death threats, and the murder of dozens of his staff, to successfully prosecute corrupt officials before PM Malaki effectively shut him down, and how one such former official, Aiham Alsammarae, who had already been convicted and was set to face even more charges for billions of missing funds while he was the Minister of Electricity, brazenly escaped a Green Zone jail with the help of U.S. contractors (twice) and is currently living large in a Chicago suburb. Judge Radhi al-Radhi: The former head of the Commission on Public Integrity who was tasked with weeding out corruption in Iraqi government. Judge Radhi was pushed out of his job by PM Maliki and forced to flee Iraq, lucky to have gotten out alive, unlike the 31 members of his staff and their family members who were murdered. He currently resides in a Washington DC suburb as he seeks asylum in the US. Judge Radhi basically has been abandoned by the State Dept as they have thus far refused to cooperate, as Judge Radhi has, with ongoing Congressional investigations into corruption in Iraq. Memo (PDF) banning Judge Radhi s Commission on Public Integrity (CPI) from investigating Iraqi officials without the consent of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Aiham Alsammarae: A wealthy Iraqi expatriate and Chicago area resident with dual citizenship recruited to become the Electricity Minister under Paul Bremer. Alsammarae was later the only Iraqi official found guilty, not in absentia, of corruption, and had more charges pending relating to billions in missing funds when he was busted out of a green zone jail - twice: The first time on Oct 11, 2006 when, reportedly, the two US contractors assigned to protect him overpowered Iraqi police and rushed him from a courtroom to the US embassy but later returned him. The two contractors later claimed they “were fired for doing our jobs, per protocol and with the full knowledge and blessings of our superiors” as Alsammarae claimed that his life was in danger. A spokesman for DynCorp later confirmed much of those details. A few weeks later investigators in the US looking into an Iraqi power plant deal involving Antoin Tony Rezko, leaked that they wanted to talk to Alsammarae about how his former college buddy managed to land that contract. Then the second time Alsammarae escaped he was apparently freed from a Green Zone jail on Dec 16, 2006 by a team working for Blackwater USA, and despite being wanted by Interpol he managed to return to the US a few weeks later. He currently resides in his gated Chicago suburb where homes range from $1.5 million to $4 million. While the following is speculation on my part, I must admit that the timing and manner of Alsammarae s escape, his ability to return to the US and resume his life apparently open and unimpeded, and the timing of his name popping up in a politically sensitive case nearly a year before Attorney General Gonzales resigned raises all kinds of flags for me, as I would think it might anyone who has followed closely the US Atty Scandal and the Don Siegelman saga. All that said, I really hope I m wrong about that. In Sept 2007 the State Department retroactively classified this previously Sensitive but Unclassified report detailing widespread fraud, intimidation and embezzlement within the Iraqi government, but not before it made its way onto the internets. Since then, the State Department has thus far refused to cooperate with Congressional investigations or turn over documents relating to corruption in Iraq.

Download (1877) | Play (2654) Download (1230) | Play (1222) Kansas City CBS affiliate KCTV5 conducted a 6 month investigation of Phil Kline, the religious zealot and rabid anti-abortion District Attorney of Johnson County, Kansas that has now caught fire on blogs nationwide, earning C s true residency and his apparent lack of work ethics and now he s running for cover. In a follow up report Tuesday night, KCTV noted that Kline refused to appear on their broadcast to defend himself, but instead chose to appear on right wing radio talk shows around Kansas where he dodged the issues and repeatedly attacked KCTV and it s reporters. KCTV captured some of his radio hissy fits and replayed them, nailing him on a number of lies and issued Kline a fifth invitation to join them to talk about the allegations. Somehow I doubt he ll accept. This is real journalism and it s encouraging to see it come out of the Midwest. Fine work, KCTV5 don t let up.
