Inflammatory bowel disease is the name of a group of disorders that cause the intestines to become inflamed (red and swollen). The inflammation lasts a long time and usually comes back over and over again. More than 600,000 Americans have some kind of inflammatory bowel disease every year. If you have inflammatory bowel disease, you may have abdominal cramps and pain, diarrhea, weight loss and bleeding from your intestines. Two kinds of inflammatory bowel disease are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Crohn's disease usually causes ulcers (open sores) along the length of the small and large intestines. Crohn's disease either spares the rectum, or causes inflammation or infection with drainage around the rectum. Ulcerative colitis usually causes ulcers in the lower part of the large intestine, often starting at the rectum. What causes inflammatory bowel disease? The exact causes are unknown. The disease may be caused by a germ or by an immune system problem. You don't have to worry about your family members catching the disease from you, because it isn't contagious. However, inflammatory bowel disease does seem to be hereditary (runs in your family). How is inflammatory bowel disease diagnosed? Based on your symptoms, your doctor may suspect that you have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Your bowel movements may be tested for germs and the presence of blood. Your doctor will probably look inside your intestines with a sigmoidoscope or a colonoscope. In these procedures, the doctor uses a narrow flexible tube to look directly inside your intestines. Special x-rays may be helpful in diagnosing this illness. How is inflammatory bowel disease treated? The best thing you can do is take good care of yourself. It's important to eat a healthy diet. Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may ask you to cut down on the amount of fiber or dairy products in your diet. In addition to eating well, you need to get enough rest. It's also important that you learn to manage the stress in your life. When you become overly upset by things that happen at home or at work, your intestinal problems can get worse. You will most likely be treated by a team of doctors. This team may include your family physician, a gastroenterologist (a specialist in stomach and intestinal disorders) and, possibly, a surgeon. http://www.emfnews.org/qlinks.html The goal of treatment is to get rid of the inflammation. Many types of medicine can reduce inflammation, including anti-inflammatory drugs such as sulfasalazine (brand name: Azulfidine), corticosteroids such as prednisone, and immune system suppressors such as azathioprine (brand name: Imuran) and mercaptopurine (brand name: Purinethol). An antibiotic, such as metronidazole (brand name: Flagyl), may also be helpful for killing germs in the intestines, especially if you have Crohn's disease. To help treat your symptoms, your doctor may recommend anti-diarrheals, laxatives, pain relievers or other over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. It is important to talk to your doctor before taking any OTC medicine on your own. Your body may not be able to handle the effects of medicine. If you have severe symptoms, such as diarrhea, fever or vomiting, you may need to go to the hospital to be treated with special fluids and medicines that must be given intravenously (in your veins). If your ulcerative colitis becomes so severe that it can't be helped by medicines, it may be necessary to remove part or all of your colon surgically. Crohn's disease usually isn't helped with surgery. For more info. go to www.CaptainColon.com or http://www.VolcanoHealing.com testimonials http://www.volcanohealing.com/testimonials.html

Oprah's Big Give
from YouTube :: Tag // oprah March 05, 2008
Dear Oprah, I am 14 years old. I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when I was 9. Usually, Crohn's is inflammation in the intestines causing abdominal pain and diarrhea. However, I have disease in my bones, joints, trachea and bladder as well as in my intestines. There is no cure for Crohn's and it significantly increases the chances of getting colon cancer. My 12 year old brother also has the disease. I have been on steroids many times to treat my disease. Last year, I was hospitalized twice and I missed a month of school. Instead of using steroids again, my doctor gave me the option of going on a liquid formula diet designed for people with Crohn's. I did well for a while, but I am having difficulties transitioning back to food. The formula has been my only source of nutrition for most of the past year. My mission is to educate and spread awareness about inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) so that it can be better understood by children, teens and adults. I am very involved with the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). I am the Youth Ambassador for the CCFA. Once people understand what the disease involves, the public will be more willing to help. Some of the things I have done to accomplish my mission include the following: • I lobbied and testified before a Senate subcommittee to pass the Restroom Access Act in Minnesota. (It was made a law in August 2007) • I have lobbied in DC to increase funding for IBD research. • I have shared my story at numerous CCFA fundraisers to help spread awareness and raise research dollars to help find a cure. • I have submitted essays to teen literary magazines about Crohn's disease. • I appeared on the local TV news and in the St.Paul newspaper telling my story and promoting Crohn's awareness. • I have created a fundraiser, Project CURE (Communication, Understanding, Respect, Education). I make bracelets and sell them to raise money for Camp Oasis, a camp for kids with IBD. If you did a segment on IBD it would help spread awareness significantly and would ultimately help more people to understand the disease. It is the first step in finding a cure. Thank you far taking time to learn about my story. I hope you can help me teach more people about IBD. Best Wishes. [ ep 16.a ] wanderlust of the foodies
from The Invincibles in "So... you want to be a foodie?" [ audio ] May 17, 2006
episode 16 - 11:02 24.9 MB[ quicktime 7 ] 24.5 MB[ quicktime 6 ] 25.2 MB[ windows media ] 5.1 MB ( audio only ) [ mp3 ] hey! we're back with another episode from our gypsy-esque meanderings around the country. we went on the road to the midwest to hang out with frunkle paul as he whips up some super-simple and simply delicious guacamole in about five minutes with just five ingredients. awhile back when we lived in minnesota, we played match-maker between our friend, paul, and rin's auntie, and they'll soon be celebrating their 7th anniversary! wooohoooo! paul has introduced us to more recipes that we love than anyone else. he's our inspiration towards experimentation. the guac recipe is allowed on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), which is a diet frunkle paul is using to treat his crohn's disease with great results. if you have crohn's or any other type of bowel disorder or imbalance of your intestinal tract, you may want to check out this special diet. we might not want to think about that end of things, but hey, that's where the food ends up, right? for more information on this diet see the official website. by the way, while the guac is allowed on the diet, the chips are not. so whip up some guac and get yourself a spoon if you're on the SCD diet. shoutouts to paul and liz (and the whole brood) over the pond for contributing to our bandwidth fund and congrats on the new baby girl! we were tickled to hear that at least one pregnant woman got to watch the shows featuring our favorite midwife, melanie (14 & 15). another big thank you goes out to kathy for her continued support. and last, but certainly not least, our sincere thanks to nathan for the surprise package from amazon. you are all so encouraging, that we plan to keep making movies about once a month for as long as we possibly can. thanks!!! if anyone else would like to donate or promote the show, check out the links on your right...no, your other right...and leave us some feedback at podcastalley or itunes. also, we'd be happy to send you the invincibles t-shirt logo if you want a DIY shirt. otherwise, consider picking one up at our store. and as always, don't forget to show us the whites of your eyes on our frappr map. we'll cook for bandwidth! help cover ourhosting costs...
