July 22, 2008

Time Lapse Version FROM SAM: The next Midnight Mystery Ride is happening on Friday the 18th of July. Last month we had a great turnout, and I'd love to see it quintupled this month. The meet up spot is Big John's Tavern on 251 E. Bay Street, downtown. At 11pm, we meet. At midnight, we ride. Destination? Mystery. Riders are encouraged to bring lights and helmets. Bug spray too. They are also encouraged to bring refreshments of their choosing, to both enjoy and share. There are no 7-11 stops planned for this ride, so stock up. It is July, and July is my birthday, so bring party hats. Please circulate widely. Continuing from last week's interviews recorded at the "Amazing Meeting 6" conference, Derek & Swoopy talk with secular lobbyist Lori Lipman Brown and her father Mel Lipman (both secular humanists with backgrounds in law and government). They also speak with mentalist Banachek, who has been responsible for putting more magic and mentalism on American television than any other magic consultant in the world. While the paths of these skeptics seem widely divergent, Derek & Swoopy learn that their common decision to further skepticism within their chosen professions illuminates many similar truthsâ

Szasz. "Nearly all books on the history of psychiatry have been written by people who wholeheartedly believe in the reality of `mental illness.' At long last we have a history of psychiatry by the very man who nearly fifty years ago declared mental illness to be a myth. Stripping away centuries of self-serving propaganda written by psychiatry's acolytes, Dr. Thomas Szasz gives us a radically new look at the history of the world's most dangerous political religions. From the eighteenth century's `trade in lunacy' to the nineteenth century's `insane asylums' to the twentieth century's `snake pits' to the twenty-first century's `outpatient commitment,' Szasz gives us a radically different perspective on the major episodes in the history of psychiatry. After Coercion as Cure, we will never be able to look at psychiatry again as a legitimate claimant to the throne of medical science." Sao Paolo activists open Bicycle Plaza As every cyclist knows biking creates community. Instead of sitting in a tin can, cyclists are out in the world, reacting to their surroundings and interacting with the friends and strangers they meet along the road. (He also sets the record straight about Pluto.) and in his third appearance on Skepticality, Adam discusses his evolution from artist and model maker to skeptic and television scientistâas well as thoughts about his life after MythBusters.Â

Movie by Elizabeth Press of Streetfilms The opening event at the Towards Car-free Cities Conference in Portland, Oregon was the depaving of a 3000 sq foot parking lot. In its place will grow a community garden along with bike parking and a water catchment system. We cover the asphalt removal, then go on a tour of past depaving sites. Bikescape was there to cover as much of the rest of the conference as one little podcaster could. Stay tuned for many more posts on this important get-together. The closing song, Chicken or Beef was written and performed by Reptet at the bike art show at Portland City Hall. I traveled with two San Franciscans who are blogging about the conference. Steve Jones is with the San Francisco Bay Guardian and is posting on their politics blog and Brian Smith runs the excellent Car Free USA blog. Download the mp3 or subscribe to Bikescape in itunes

When talking about the Citizens Commission for Human Rights it is nearly impossible to separate them from the Church of Scientology. Regardless of what claims this group may make, the tactics of the former mirror those of the latter. L Ron Hubbard was a paranoid schizophrenic. This can be seen throughout his writings, which would later become the scriptures of the Church of Scientology. CCHR, whether they claim to be a separate entity or not, also embraces these twisted ideals. While watching "Psychiatry: Industry of death" by the CCHR the fears of the founder of the cult could be seen reflected within the claims of this propaganda film. They present it as if were a legitimate documentary, however many of the facts have been changed, exaggerated, doctored, and in same cases invented. It's time to challenge these claims, and display the exaggerated conspiracy theory at its core.. Which have been passed down by the beliefs held within the Church of Scientology through the words of L Ron Hubbard. Each of their claims will be dealt with one at a time, in order. At the same time each of their paranoid conspiracy theories will be displayed as what they are, for the world to judge. This is, of course, an attempt to set the mood. I admit it's a bold opening, and scary voice-over guy does a great job sounding official as well as ominous. However this is clearly part of the conspiracy theory at it's core. Psychiatry is a medical industry composed predominantly of small practices. There are those who work in hospitals, clinics, and government agencies. It's not some vast evil corporation. There's no real hierarchy to it, however there are experts at the top of this field as with any other. Just like in the medical profession, most got into the field to help others, some joined for the money, and a few to satisfy their egos. The prescription drug companies advertise everywhere, but what company doesn't? This is a topic which will be dealt with more later in the series. However, at this juncture it seems prudent to point out that companies offering promotions to advocate their product over that of another company is not a reflection upon the field of psychiatry. Psychiatrists do not hypnotize patients.. That's hypnotherapy not psychology or psychiatry. L Ron Hubbard in the scriptures of scientology insists otherwise, in numerous display of his paranoid delusional states during which he wrote. Then again he also insists any pain drugs a person takes induces a form of hypnosis - this includes drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen, not just heavy narcotics. Unless you live within a psychiatric ward, psychiatry is clearly not represented in every aspect of your life.. even if you ARE a psychiatrist or psychologist. However I should note.. if you happen to be paranoid, delusional, and obsessed with psychiatry this could certainly seem to be the case.. However it would be just as real as aliens reading peoples brain-waves unless you wear a tinfoil hat. Now, for their next claim.. And an examination of their statistical manipulation, as well as poor math skills. But before we begin, it is worth mentioning that those within the Church of Scientology are well known for misrepresenting numerical statistics. They claim that there are well over 8 million Scientologists. However, under oath, in a court of law, one of their representatives grudgingly admitted that the calculated 8 million included every person who ever took a course, living or dead, since they were founded. This includes those who take their WISE business courses, Applied Scholastic courses, anyone who was ever at Narconon even if they were part of the roughly 85% which wash out of the program. scientology cchr psychiatry anonymous industry death debunk review critical cult Author: 13Heathens Keywords: scientology cchr psychiatry anonymous industry death debunk review critical cult Added: June 19, 2008

Bikescape goes to a community meeting of the San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Authority as the city solicits public input about the stalled bike plan. We encountered vociferous opposition from parents at three schools on Broadway who feel they must drive their kids to school each day. This begs the question: Why are double parkers considered "stakeholders" and why are their dangerous and illegal actions considered a "reality we must deal with" while all the while demanding harsher enforcement for "scofflaw bicyclists." Critical Mass (1/3)Critical Mass (1/3)
from YouTube :: Tag // newyork
June 11, 2008

A film by Hollis Frampton. Made in 1971. "Critical mass shows a young New York couple arguing about their relationship. The film starts on the soundtrack; the screen is blank. Initially the dialogue is cut up in such a way that the couple seems to stutter as they talk (Frampton adds the stutter to such recent perceptual constructs as Warhol stares, Kubelka's flicker and Makes' glimpse). Lines of dialogue are cut into before they are finished, partially repeated, stopped again, repeated, until the phrase or sentence is finished and a new one begins in the same manner. A line like: I'm going to leave you, comes out: I'm goin'... going to lea.... to leave you... save you. An'.... When the image appears, we see the couple arguing, standing against a white wall. The picture is cut to reflect the stutter, repeating itself and going on, finishing one phrase and starting another. Later the stutter effect disappears and a second structural principle emerges. The sound and image go out of synchronization so that we hear the boy speaking while we see the girl's mouth moving and vice versa. The degree of de-synchronization varies mysteriously, disconcerting us. There are two kinds of temporal tensions in this film. In the first part, the stutter creates a future-past tension as in Nostalgia, only on a more immediate second-to-second basis. The incomplete phrases gives us a sense of what is to come. The repetition brings us backwards, then carries us forward, stops, and returns. Time does not evolve in a linear way. We are continually moved from future to past and back again, with no true sense of a present. In the second past of the film, the sound-image disjunction brings about the temporal problem. Because of our retarded awareness of the disjunction we are never quite sure whether we are listening to something that has already been spoken in the image or to something about to be spoken. We are simultaneously either listening in the present and seeing the past or listening to the past and seeing the present." - Bill Simon "As a work of art I think (Critical Mass) is quite universal and deals with all quarrels (those between men and women, or men and men, or women and women, or children, or war. It is war!... It is one of the most delicate and clear statements - human relationships and the difficulties of them that I have ever seen. It is very funny, and rather obviously so. It is a magic film in that you can enjoy it, with greater appreciation, each time you look at it. Most aesthetic experiences are not enjoyable on the surface. You have to look at them a number of times before you are able to fully enjoy them, but this one stands up at once, and again and again, and is amazingly clear." - Stan Brakhage http://hollisframpton.org.uk Author: MaternalHopi Keywords: hollis frampton critical mass Added: June 11, 2008

For now I pass you this flickr video clip of how I spent much of my day today, walking the norrow aisles of the Chatuchak Weekend Market, a very large and impressive maze of merchants and people alike. PS - To anyone who sent the link, emailed, or worried about my presence at the demonstrations today in Bangkok, you might be relieved to know that I got lost and never arrived where I had hoped to arrive to observe the demonstrations.  If I get another chance I will try again, and I will approach with caution so worry not!
