We do not live by bread alone, but we don’t live without it, either! Bread is the staff of life. From tortillas to matzo, bread in every variety is necessary to survival. It is also vital to relationships. When we "break bread" we acknowledge that we are made for relationship with the community of Jesus. "I am the bread of life," Jesus said. On World Communion Sunday we affirm our dependence upon Jesus. Despite the difficulty we have getting along with fellow Christians, breaking the bread of life reminds us that in Jesus we are one body.

Is Jesus "Family Friendly?" In the home where Jesus rules, there will be harmony and stability and no strife. All right, maybe just a little. "The family that prays together stays together," the old saying goes, and no one can dispute that family prayer is a wonderful thing. Jesus, however, told would-be followers that the decision for him could be costly. Families will be divided. "Don’t think that I’ve come to bring peace but a sword." "Whoever does not leave father and mother is not fit for the kingdom," is what he said. He makes us choose. The choices may be disruptive. But who says Jesus’ disruptions are bad?
