Privacy: Is it Time for a Revolution? - Full Program
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 15, 2008
Protecting reader privacy and confidentiality has long been an integral part of the mission of ALA and its members. Should it continue to be a priority? In an age when people increasingly use social networking to expose intimate life details, does privacy still matter to information seekers? Does anyone care if their library records and online searches are being tracked? If they don't, why should they? Author Cory Doctorow, Wired senior writer Dan Roth, and Privacy Rights Clearinghouse director Beth Givens debate the importance of privacy and what's at stake if the persistent erosion of privacy continues unchecked. A panel presented by the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom at the 2008 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA

Cory Doctorow: Show us your "Little Brother" HOWTO videos, and "Dumpster-Diving Philosopher."
from Boing Boing TV May 14, 2008
Can't see the video? Watch this video now in a browser or download this video now. Today on Boing Boing tv, Cory Doctorow invites you to create and share HOWTO videos based on an ongoing series of Instructables posts that draw from his latest book, Little Brother. Here's how Andrew “bunnie” Huang, author of Hacking the Xbox, describes the book: [A] scarily realistic adventure about how homeland security technology could be abused to wrongfully imprison innocent Americans. A teenage hacker-turned-hero pits himself against the government to fight for his basic freedoms. This book is action-packed with tales of courage, technology, and demonstrations of digital disobedience as the technophile’s civil protest. Here's how to submit your Little Brother HOWTO video to Boing Boing tv: (1) Shoot it! (2) Upload it to YouTube or another video hosting site! (3) Tell us where to find it! Submit the url here. (4) Selected videos will be featured on BBtv! Also in today's episode (which, by the way, is Cory's BBtv debut): Legendary dumpster-diver Darren Atkinson was the subject of Cory's first-ever WIRED magazine feature in 1994. Cory returns to the trash-heap for BBtv with the "modern industrialist philosopher of garbage," who also performs in multiple WHO cover bands. In related news, here's a Little Brother library/school donation project update, and if you're in Chicago, come on out to one of the Little Brother events taking place in your area over the next two days!

Cory Doctorow releases Little Brother
from I Should Be Writing 2.0 May 06, 2008
One of my favorite guests from I Should Be Writing, Cory Doctorow, has a new book out! A YA book focusing on kids, online rights and Homeland Security, Little Brother is available in hardcover and audiobook. Cory s strongly against DRM - digital rights management - and refuses to release his book through Audible or iTunes until they give artists a DRM-free option. You can get the audiobook off his site, or at eMusic through their audiobook program (but sign up or upgrade to the two-credit-a-month option). And Cory was kind enough to let me put Chapter 1 in my feed so that you ll be able to sample the book. Thanks Cory, and I hope you all like this treat!

Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother: DRM-Free Audio Book
from Chris Pirillo May 03, 2008
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Cory Doctorow has written a new audio book, entitled Little Brother . He sent me the following email to give us all a peek at the plot, and to explain something very important and ground-breaking about this book. Plot Synopsis Marcus, a.k.a “w1n5t0n,” is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works – and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems. But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they’re mercilessly interrogated for days. When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself. The audio book is from Random House Audio, and was released on April 29, and cost is $20.00. What s the big deal? The deal is that it s ONLY being delivered as a DRM-free MP3. There will be no DRMed editions. This is a first for Random House Audio. The audio book comes with the author s sampling license: once you own it, you’re free to take up to 30 minutes’ worth of material from it and remix and then redistribute it as much as you like, provided that you do so on a noncommercial basis, make sure that it’s clear that this is a remix and not the original, and make sure that you tell people where to find the original. This is in addition to all the fair use remixing that you’re allowed to do. After playing a half-hour of the audio book for my chat room, no one wanted me to stop! You guys know where to go to where to get the rest. How can you not love an author who writes about saggy man boobs ? I love that Corey has taken the DRM out of the book, and I can t wait to see others follow suit. Listen And Grow Rich. Seduction - How To Pickup Women! Audio Training Program. Pua. Converting Unprotected AAC to MP3 For Dummies (Or Cory Doctorow)
from Vimeo / vincenzof's uploaded videos June 01, 2007
Cory Doctorow is upset that unprotected AAC files purchased from iTunes, for some reason, can't be roundtripped by burning to a CD. Since he's a moron, though, he doesn't realize that you can achieve the same result by right clicking the file and converting it to an MP3. Said file contains all the metadata including all the album art. Someone really needs to explain to me why people insist on calling this idiot brilliant. Cast: vincenzof

Metacrap and Flickr Tags: An Interview with Cory Doctorow
from AudioBerkman May 03, 2007
From David Weinberger s Wired News Podcast Series: Welcome to the first in a series of interviews conducted by David Weinberger, author of the new book Everything Is Miscellaneous. In this series, which is cosponsored by Wired News and the Harvard Berkman Center for the Internet and Society, David talks with some of the leading businesspeople, scientists, and thinkers who are coming up with innovative new ways of putting ideas, information and knowledge together. Now that the digital age has blown apart traditional ways of organizing information, what s next? Suddenly, everything is miscellaneous. David kicks off the series by interviewing novelist, BoingBoing co-editor, digital rights activist and entrepreneur Cory Doctorow. For Cory, piling up information without strict organizational rules can be workable provided that we have sufficiently reliable metadata. The problem is that people don t all use metadata the same way or use tags consistently, and that can be a real obstacle to making coherent sense of piles of information. David and Cory discuss the advantages and pitfalls of explicit and implicit metadata, tags and the rules governing the use and re-use of content in commerce and culture. In future podcasts, David will talk with political blogger Arianna Huffington, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Kayak founder Paul English, BBC Richard Sambrook, and Markos Moulitsas Zuniga. Bookmark Epicenter s podcast category and come back next week for the next interview! (Photo above by Jason Kottke) Download the audio MP3 file. Subscribe to the RSS feed for this series. Pizza With A Gunshot Wound
from Vimeo / vincenzof's uploaded videos May 02, 2007
I went to my normal pizza joint for lunch, and when I opened up the box to put some garlic on it (you can't have pizza without garlic! God forbid!) I saw this weird hole in my slice! Now, common sense tells me it's a hole where the dough ripped, but still... I had to video it and share :-) Cast: vincenzof
