Ep 110: Coral, the Stone Henge of the Pacific, and more of the sights, sounds and science of Tonga
from The Mr Science Show on August 06, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
This week's podcast takes us back across the ocean to discover more of the sights, sounds and science of Tonga - see our previous episode for more on Tongan blowholes and whales. On location in Tonga, we tackle the topics of: Haʻamonga ʻa Maui - otherwise known as The Stone Henge of the Pacific. This is an ancient 12-tonne stone trilithon whose purpose is not exactly known, much like that other Stone Henge in the UK. A previous King of Tonga, Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV, once claimed it had an astronomical significance as it can determine the position of sunrise at solstices and equinoxes. As it was said by the King, it is the accepted explanation for what is an odd stone construction, at least in Tonga anyway. How did people get to Tonga in the first place? The generally accepted history is that the Lapita people came down through Papua New Guinea into Melanesia and Polynesia. However, Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl had other ideas based on the fact that the sweet potato (kumera) is found in both South America and Polynesia. To prove that it was at least possible that Tongans came from South America, in 1947 he sailed the Kon-Tiki raft across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Tuamotus. Heyerdahl showed that, by using only the materials and technologies available at the time, there were no technical issues that prevented South Americans coming to Polynesia. Whilst the evidence suggests that people came through South East Asia and Papua New Guinea to reach the Pacific, one school of thought suggests that Polynesians may indeed have travelled to South America and picked up the kumera from there.Back here in Australia, I spoke to Lachlan Whatmore about coral - what is it, how does it form, and what life does it support. Lachlan is a diving enthusiast and the golden tonsils of Australian community radio - as well as a qualified Marine Biologist. In short, coral is an Anthozoan marine organism that lives in colonies of polyps. Corals build reefs in tropical oceans - the reefs are made up of their calcium carbonate skeletons. Listen in for more. And tacked onto the end of this show, we have a Correlation of the Week - this week discussing the relationship between eclipses and the stock market - see our previous story on the topic for more. Listen to this podcast here: Stay tuned for our final edition on Tonga in a few weeks.

Correlation between Breast Cancer and Antiperspirants

I have thought about this for awhile and Youtube would be a great place to get input from women all over the world. There is a billion dollar industry for anti-perspirants and underarm deodorants. It says, "Do not use on broken skin." Well, many women in the USA shave their underarms. Therefore, this aluminum chlorohydrate which is the active ingredient gets into the pores and into the lymph nodes. What do you think? VIDEO: Correlation Found Between Facebook Use and Lower GPAs, Low Glycemic Index Breakfast Enhances Effects of Exercise, Gene Variants Affect Stroke Risk
from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video) on April 16, 2009

(April 16, 2009 - Insidermedicine) From Ohio - According to research from Ohio State University, students who use social networking sites like Facebook have lower grade point averages. In a survey of 219 students, researchers found that the GPAs of Facebook users were in the range of 3.0 to 3.5, compared to 3.5 to 4.0 among non-users. The study points out that this is a correlation, and not necessarily a matter of cause and effect. From the UK - According to research in the Journal of Nutrition, a low glycemic-index breakfast can enhance the effects of moderate exercise. In a study of 8 sedentary women, researchers found that those who ate a low glycemic-index breakfast had an increase in fat oxidation during a 60-minute walk, compared to those who ate high glycemic-index foods. LGI foods include cereals made from oats, barley, and bran. And finally, from Boston - According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists have found gene variants that affect stroke risk. In a large genome-wide association study, researchers found that having one copy of either variant resulted in a 30% increased risk of stroke. While further study is required, this sort of discovery may lead to personalized care based on an individual's genetic makeup. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.

FOREX VIDEO REVIEW: London Session February 18, 2009

Today we go over a failed trade, one that did not perform as hoped, and how proper management still gave us a few pips to show for it. After some fairly decent pre-London trade setups, and a very strong British Pound break south in the start of London, we found ourselves long GBP/USD back to resistance 90 pips away (nice trade as well), but actively planning a re-short continuation off of a nice Fibonacci pullback zone, and other ema etc. means of resistance overlap around the 1.4195 area. Nearly all of the GBP/USD's behavior up until this point was completely foretold, and confirmed via correlation with the EUR/GBP Using these overlap levels on the GBP/USD, along with the EUR/GBP reacting off support at the exact same time offered us a high quality short entry off the 15minute 21ema. In this video I break down the trade setup in complete detail, how we executed the entry, used the EUR/GBP for correlation, and also what we used to determine that the trade was becoming a failure. Using this information either led us to a manual 30 pip profit close, or at minimum a 15 pip MAP (Minimal Acceptable Performance) trade profit stop out before the pair reversed on us and made a significant higher high past our entry. Not the 150 or so pips profit we were after, but this shows how incredibly important proper trade entry + proper management is. FOREX Training Video | NY Close Session December 18, 2008

We are halfway through our 40 hour FXBootcamp trading/coaching marathon, and what a nice way to kick off the NY close today. Straight away as the session began, we caught a glimpse of a nice triangle formation on the DOW Jones just as most Japanese Yen pairings were sandwiched tightly between support and resistance, looking very heavy. This 3pm-4pm NY time frame is often the source of some very nice stock market volatility, and today did not disappoint. Seeing this setup on the Dow, I pulled up the most correlated Yen pairing with the markets, the Eur/Jpy. Simply put at that time all we needed was a break of the 8600 trendline area on the Dow and we would be very likely to see a nice drop of 100 pips or so on the Eur/Jpy, or any Yen pairing of ones choice. Sure enough, the Dow & S&P led the way, and the Yens followed. In this video we primarily use visual support/resistance, stock market correlation, and Fibonacci retracements to enter into what turned out to be a high quality, fast 85 pip drop straight to support to kick off the session. See you in London! FOREX Training Video | London Session December 2, 2008

Today's London session had proven to be ranging a good bit, with very little overall follow through of any moves. Even so, in this video we highlight how we used a drawn trendline break on the EUR/USD to build a trade plan. Correlation with the USD/CHF bouncing off it's own trendline at the same time as the EUR/USD break was ideal confirmation of the break being legitimate. Then simply applying a Fibonacci retracement study from support at the 1.26 support area to the high of the break at 126.47, provided a nice 38.2-50.00% Fib entry zone of 1.2630-1.2625. This Fib zone was also the break area of the previous trend line which was an ideal situation of role reversal (resistance becoming support) along with the Fib level itself. Also it happened to be the Daily Central Pivot Point, and Weekly m3 pivot point. So lets see, break of all this resistance, following by a pullback/retest of this area which overlapped perfectly with the 'ideal' Fibonacci retracement zone.. Hmm, Yummy. Ultimately the EUR/USD returned to the 38.2 at 1.2630 then proceeded to immediately make it's way to the 15m 200 EMA 50 pips away. Not an amazing amount of pips for a trade plan, but 50 pips for 20'ish pips risk (stop below the 78.6), right off support, works for me anytime.
