Cinematical Seven: The Smartest Unlawful Citizens

Cinematical Seven: The Smartest Unlawful Citizens

from Cinematical on October 15, 2009
Duration: 0
This Friday is all about wild things at the multiplex. Some are furry and lovable, and explore the emotions of childhood. Others are law abiding citizens, blowing up Philadelphia and showing off their follow-me-lines for no plotworthy reason. I decided to honor the latter with my Cinematical Seven, because Law Abiding Citizen marks Gerard Butler's big producing debut, and any film that requires he abandon trousers is worthy of celebration. Law Abiding Citizen centers on Clyde Shelton, who loses his family in a grisly slaying and decides to exact his own justice in true Charles Bronson style. But whereas Bronson just needed to speak softly and carry a big gun, Shelton decides to exact his revenge from behind bars. So, in honor of his crazy-eyed and pantless plotting, I've decided to list seven inmates who could have inspired Clyde Shelton's reign of terror. These lawful and unlawful citizens all manage to hatch impressive plans while locked up in the slammer. Some of them are just sick of prison food and trying to get out, while others have more sinister goals in mind. Regardless of their guilt or innocence, we often find ourselves rooting for them to dodge their stripes, and thwart the system. Head below the jump for the seven! Boomers, it's sad news, but Paul Newman died last week. His body of work was remarkable, and his charitable works through his Newman's Own food company were just as important. No jokes today, just fond rememberances of an incredible career. In memory of Paul Newman, 1925 - 2008. Share your favourite memories in the comments.

SomaCow 226: Ode to Booze

SomaCow Media is proud to present SomaCow brought to you this week by O boys and Curtis Earth Trivia. Two great tastes! Ross came in a little late this week but all he missed in the notes was some talk about him being late But we don t blame him too much, after all the night before was his birthday party where trivia and beer abounded! He came in and jumped right on his job and then handed out beer. That took away a bit of the pain of him being late. Good call, Ross! Geoff, Mickey and I (not J) got him some funky beer from Total Wine which is a mecca of alcohol! Thank god for dear friends having birthdays so we could check out this place. And thank god for those dear friends sharing it with us. Speaking of dear friends, we sure do miss the hell out of one big bastard. Come home lil doggy! Have you ever had sun tea? It s a tradition or a staple what is that word? Well, we do it here in the south! You take tea but instead of making it inside you put it outside in the sun. My mom used to do this all the time but I didn t like tea at the time. Why don t northerners make sun tea? They still could, for a few weeks each August? I guess we just do it more often here since we can do it all but a week in January and a week in February. And in other things the south just does better (yes, I m trying to rile you all up, come on Yankees!) At Ross s party we had a thing called a rib nibbler. They were little bite size chunks of rib (bone-in) and they were GOOD. I didn t try the ribs but from what I hear these were better than their specialty of baby back ribs! They didn t even need any dressing. Speaking of dressing, Paul Newman died. I d say it was bad that current generations knew him more for his salad dressing but he has stated that he enjoyed that more and he made more money for it so good for him! We did lose a good liberal in that man though. RIP Mr Newman. I thought I had finally found something to pick on Ross for as there was no music listed but then I remembered from listening live Saturday from 1-4 PM Eastern, that there was no music as we had a twitter pal of Ross call in! Thanks for the great call Mister32. Related articles by Zemanta Farewell Paul Newman

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2007 PT.2

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2007 PT.2

from WLSO.FM on March 14, 2008

Before we move on to our next R.I.P., I have a bit more about Eric Von Schmidt, including the liner notes to one of his albums written by Bob Dylan. Then it is on to the loss of Billy Henderson- if you didn t know, a member of the Spinners- and a song he is most connected with. This is a strange episode, with seemingly a lot of non-rock people. But trust me, it will be painless and have some damn good music. So is the case with the beautiful Barbara McNair, an actress but a singer too. And I ll play an old 1968 single she made for Motown Records, so you know it can t be bad. In 1968, NOTHING coming out of Motown was bad! Then Frankie Laine who died at 93. This guy had hits pre-rock s and beyond. From 1968 again, an outstanding instrumental combining elements of jazz and funk called Soulful Strut for the loss of Eldee Young, one half of Young-Holt Unlimited. You should know this one but probably haven t heard it in a long time. Just simply a great song. After that, Ken and I did have a discussion about whether to play Betty Hutton. I pushed for it, because if we are truly to be free-form there are no restrictions. Although she has no discernible rock & roll roots, she was certainly part of our American pop culture. And recently I have seen bits and pieces of her on Turner Classic Movies, and although I had no opinion before, I find her to be immensely likable in a fun, almost tomboyish way. Those sweetheart of a girl-next-door qualities are more than obvious in what you will hear. I will end this one with a question. What song would you play for the late director of the classic movie Cool Hand Luke? Hope we agree- and much more to come with our Tribute/Memorial celebrations of some lives.
