A recent Chili cookoff is being called a winner, after numerous eateries participated in a very successful event. The 15th annual Downtown Chili Challenge was held earlier this month at the Park Place Dome in downtown Traverse City. 18 local restaurants entered a total of 25 different chilies in the event. Eight different categories were offered, as was a "People's Choice" award; about 1500 people attended the cook-off. All proceeds from this year's Downtown Chili Challenge will be used to help support community activities in Traverse City; those events include Friday Night Live, the Halloween walk, numerous holiday activities and other events held downtown throughout the year.

After three furious hours of mixing, stirring and cooking, the judges took their first bites at the 30th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival Great Garlic Cook-Off. The event featured amateur chefs from around the country who were chosen to prepare a dish live based on recipes they had sent in to a selection committee earlier this year.
