Friday Night Blues and Beer #117Friday Night Blues and Beer #117
from Friday Night Blues
July 25, 2008

The Beer: Say hello to a red ale from the award winning Pump House Brewery in Moncton, New Brunswick. I tell you it was a beautiful pour, dark copper and incredibly clear with a wonderful cream coloured head that slowly descends into some glass hugging lace. The aroma is of roasted malts and caramel with just a hint of mustiness. Is it as good as it looks? Oh yeah - lots of malts with a bit of tartness to it but not too much. Pretty balanced and it seems to just fill your mouth. Contains 5.5% alcohol and ran me around $13 Canadian for a six. Two thumbs up but as always get a second opinion. The Blues: Made special for our friends at Environmental Canada I bring you a bed of east and west coast big band blues slathered with modern delta and topped off with punk escape and sweet sticky swamp. Let s get it on: Playlist: BJ Allen and Blue Voodoo (Gypsy Woman), Monte Montgomery (1st And Repair), Jeff Strahan (Amen to the Blues), Marc Ford (Live The Life I Love), Smokey Wilson, South Side Slim, ve Been Thinkin), Kal David ve Been Down For So Long), The Red Wagons Blues Band (Safronia B), Keri Leigh (Use What You Got), Steve Kozak s Westcoast Blues Revue (Girl Of My Dreams), Sugar Blue (Just To Be With You), Robin Rogers (Color-Blind Angel), Dede Priest (Room 239), Mike Morgan and The Crawl (Take Me Back), Vargas Blues Band (Barstool Blues), Blindside Blues Band (Lonely Road), Jimmy Friday Links: Subscribe | A big thank you to M.C. Since its inception, ART Santa Fe provides Project Spaces for alternative work. This year, eight non-profit institutions and galleries host Project Spaces. One of them is the Santa Fe Art Institute, which sponsored Gradient Ghosts I , a wall installation and video by the artist collective Keep Adding. Keep Adding works in the field of multimedia and installation art. The artist group began in La Mesilla, New Mexico in 2001, making graffiti-inspired murals in abandoned buildings. Now the group is working in various kinds of media. I met with the two group members Brian Bixby and Noah MacDonald at Art Santa Fe. In this episode they talk about the beginnings of Keep Adding and their collaborative process. Brian lives and works in Santa Fe, Noah recently moved to Marfa. Art Santa Fe, July 11, 2008. July 22, 2008

Hiroshi Fuji is a social activist. Fuji creates installations, performances, and events that focus on community. He uses materials deemed useless or valueless by society – such as empty water bottles, and old toys – to create works of art. One of his projects is Kaekko , a project that simulates the model of a bazaar: Children exchange their unwanted toys, creating a new market and new values for formerly worthless items. For Lucky Number Seven , SITE Santa Fe Seventh International Biennial, he created Kaeru . As Hiroshi Fuji states: Kaeru starts with a bazaar where children bring unwanted toys to exchange. Local people involve themselves in making artworks from the materials brought to the bazaar. Those works are the interwoven with elements at key places in Santa Fe. This video shows Kaeru at the Museum of International Folk Art on Museum Hill in Santa Fe, and the Santa Fe Opera Parking Lot. Other venues are Fine Arts for Children Teens and the National Dance Institute of New Mexico. PS: The shooting of the Santa Fe Opera Parking Lot was really funny, did you know a cult called Tailgating ? > Right-click (Mac: ctrl-click) this link to download Quicktime video file. > Click this link to watch Quicktime video in new movie window. July 18, 2008

Early on today as I got a storm hanging around that has been messing with the power. The Beer: Say hello to the Premium Export Lager from the Whistler Brewing Company in Whistler, B.C.. It comes in a clear bottle so I was a little iffy on even trying it but here goes.. She pours a clear bubbly gold with a mild head that leaves almost no lacing. It smells a little like sweet rotting grain with bits of malt. It tastes of sweet malt and corn sugar with a blunt aftertaste of something molasses-like that clings to the back of your throat. It ran around $12 Canadian for a six and contains 5% alcohol. I don t think I would buy it again - one thumb up but as always get a second opinion. The Blues: Get ready and start your blues engines as we re breaking it up and breaking it down and pumping out the usual great joy - Let s get it on:Playlist: Ron Yarosz (Gettin It Done), Mighty Mike Schermer (I ll Be Glad), Downchild Blues Band (It s Been So Long), Etta James (Crawlin King Snake), Patty Harper t Love), Hot Monkey Love (Fallin ), Pistol Pete and the Professionals (Wired), James Van Buren (Three Handed Woman), Big George Brock (Cut You Loose), Little Mike t meet death without having your fun,Work with me cause I m getting it done. Michael Holmes conducts Brooks "Phantasmagoria"Michael Holmes conducts Brooks "Phantasmagoria"
from YouTube :: Tag // virginia
July 18, 2008

Kris Brooks - Phantasmagoria (Excerpt) Vidin Philharmonia, Bulgaria Michael Holmes, conductor About the composer: Kris Brooks enjoys composing modern music, forging ahead into the musical unknown. But he equally enjoys writing imaginary compositions from the past. For example, his Fantasia & Fugue for violin and keyboard is a piece that an experimental Bach could have written in 1765, had he lived another fifteen years. Likewise, "Nostalgic Reflections" (1st mvt. of his Symphony No. 1) is an orchestral work Brooks himself might have composed had he been one of the Jugendstil generation in Vienna around 1908 to 1912. Of course, historical accuracy in a musical sense is not the goal. Rather, each scenario serves as a catalyst to the compositional process. When it comes to his truly modern music, Brooks feels more associated with certain compositional techniques of Lutoslawski & Penderecki, or Crumb & Corigliano, though his own personal voice - a voice borne out of an innate connection to the music of Bach and Mahler - is quite evident. But whether it's a foot in the past or a foot in the present, each of Kris Brooks' compositions reveals a highly defined musical vision set within a distinctive sound world, and with a communicative depth that profoundly affects the listener. Brooks' compositions range from solo pieces to works for full orchestra, with performances in the U.S. and abroad. The Richmond Symphony Orchestra Woodwind Quintet(VA) included A Dialogue, his duet for oboe & bassoon, in their 1993 tour. His European debut came in 1995 with the première of Concepts in Contrast (Concerto for 12 Cellos, 3 Double Basses, and Percussion). Cellissimo, made up of musicians from the Hochschule für Musik Köln and the Kölner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester, gave the première in Aachen, Germany. Devil's Fate, a piece for full orchestra, was premièred by the Contemporary Youth Orchestra (Cleveland) in 1997. Mr. Brooks already has fulfilled numerous commissions in his career. In 1998, he completed Phantasmagoria for full orchestra, made possible by a commission from the Suburban Youth Orchestra (Chicago), though Vidin Philharmonic (Bulgaria) actually gave the world première in the Spring of 2004. Nostalgic Reflections, a neo-Romantic work for orchestra, was premièred by the Filharmonia Sudecka (Poland) in 2000. He served as composer-in-residence with the Richmond Philharmonic in Virginia during the 2001/2002 season. Currently, Brooks is at work on his First Symphony. After studying composition under John Hilliard at James Madison University, Kris studied with Ladislav Kubik at Florida State University. In addition, he has also participated in masterclasses with James Mobberly, William Kraft, Joan Tower, Ellen Zwillich, and Stephen Paulus, among others. Mr. Brooks enjoys the outdoors and wildlife, as well as independent pursuits in music, art, architecture, photography, literature, and Virginia history. About Michael Holmes: Michael Holmes's career has encompassed a wide spectrum of musical pursuits, including the fields of historical performance, symphonic conducting, composing/arranging, and scholarly research. He serves as music director of the Orchestra of the 17th Century in Washington D.C., artistic director of the Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble (one of the USA's premiere period brass ensembles), and director of the University of Maryland Collegium Musicum. He has also performed on an array of period instruments with ensembles such as Stylus Luxurians, the Washington Bach Consort, Opera Lafayette, and Piffaro. Michael has performed extensively as a conductor in Europe, leading symphonic, opera, and historical performances in Poland, Czech Republic, Finland, Romania, and Bulgaria. As a Fulbright Scholar, he undertook extensive research on Nordic music in Finland, specializing in the music of Sibelius, and sang on two tours with the premiere Finnish male voice choir Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat (including one at New York's Lincoln Center), and was present during their recording of the Sibelius complete works for male voice choir on the Finlandia label. Currently, he serves as the music director at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring, MD.
