From time immemorial politicians have promised the moon. Some delivered. My natural inclination regarding Barack Obama is to be skeptical and cautious because he hasn't yet really been tested. On the other hand, he's shown a remarkable ability to bring people together and he tends to say the right thing in the right way at the right time. See, for example, his great speech yesterday in Berlin. Moreover, people whose judgment about people is better than mine tend to trust him. To kick around some perceptions of Obama and talk politics generally I went Midwest, in a conversation with Dr. Bud McClure, a psychologist at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. It was shot in 1 day in a West London athletic club. The director was hired the day before shooting began. At the shoot the director realized he had seen Rick a few months earlier. Rick had been "fetching tea" for record producers. The same producers saw his talent and made him a "fetching" new pop star. When record execs first heard Rick's voice they didn't believe it was his. Neither did critics - many thought he was a front for a black singer. Rick wasn't lying - fans gave him a nod of approval. "Never Gonna Give You UP" was the best selling single of 1987 in the UK. It knocked George Michae's "Father Figure" from the top slot. At 21 Rick was the second youngest Brit to have a #1 hit. But... George Michael was first - he mad his breakthrough in 1984 at the age of 20. The dancer on the right didn't know the steps - the director tried to hide her. This vide's "bartender" arrived on the set "extremely hungover." Rick once said he could drink everyone in his record company under the table. Not the bartender - he spent most of the shoot "passed-out" on a pool table. Rick says he hates music videos and wished he never had to do them. He says "videos are too repetitive." He says "videos are too repetitive." He says "videos are too repetitive." And they "tend to repeat themselves." Rick's manager and the director got into an argument during the shoot. The bartender slept throught it. The fight was over whether Rick's sleeves shough be rolled up or not. It lasted 2 hours. The bartender had nearly "slept off his headache" when he was asked to do a stunt. On his first attempt he landed on his head. Rick gave up his producers in 1990 - he was tired of being "treated like a puppet." Howdy boody's puppet career lasted twice as long as Rick's - he gave it up after 14 years. Pinocchio's puppet career ended when he gave up lying - and became a real boy. Former "tea boy" Rick was animated in 1994. He went into the studio to sing backup on "The Lion King" soundtrack. Someone else fetched his tea for him. After saying goodbye to his first producers, Rick brought a longer hairstyle and hipper look to his next album in 1991. But fans didn't find him as fetching and Rick gave it up.
