James Kalm ignores the sweltering heat wave to visit this astounding exhibition of works by legendary San Francisco artist Jess. Since rejecting a career in nuclear physics to pursue his unique vision of art, Jess (Burgess Collins, 1923-2004) has created one of the most influential reputations on the West Coast. With an independence of thought, Jess evolved an unmistakable painting style, as well as carried the tradition of collage to new heights of richness and complexity. This is the first New York gallery show in over twenty years and the first in-depth presentation of the work since the Whitney s Grand Collage retrospective in 1994.

MADtv Season 9: The ninth season of MADtv aired from September 13, 2003, to May 22, 2004, with 25 episodes. Season summary: After Debra Wilson left the show at the end of last season, season nine was the first without any original cast members. Former featured players Ike Barinholtz, Josh Meyers, Ron Pederson, and Paul Vogt were upgraded to repertory status. (This would be Meyers' last season on MADtv, but he later appeared on the FOX sitcom That '70s Show.) Among season nine's new cast members was Daniele Gaither, a member of Groundlings who was trained by Michael McDonald before appearing on MADtv. (Gaither had previously appeared in season two as one of the Dolemite girls in a sketch about Bob Dole.) Her celebrity impersonations included Eve, La La, and Tyra Banks. The second new cast member was Nicole Parker, who became known for her impersonations of Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Ellen DeGeneres, Renée Zellweger, and Judy Garland (as the character Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz parodies). Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele joined the show as featured cast members. Peele created several hilarious characters (such as Funkenstein) and offbeat impersonations (such as Ja Rule). Both Key and Peele were promoted to repertory players the next season. New cast members Melissa Paull and Gillian Vigman (known for celebrity impersonations including Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, and Pamela Anderson) were introduced in the ninth season, but left at season's end. Season nine included the show's 200th episode; several former cast members returned to mark the occasion. Orlando Jones appeared as Andre 3000 of Outkast performing a parody of "Hey, Ya." Nicole Sullivan reprised characters such as the Vancome Lady and impersonations of Meg Ryan and Judith from Literally. Alex Borstein made her first appearance since season seven and portrayed the beloved character Miss Swan. Will Sasso revived his famous impersonations of Bill Clinton and Kenny Rogers. Cast veteran Artie Lange (now a regular on The Howard Stern Show) recorded a monologue of his life since leaving Madtv. Former original cast member Phil LaMarr also appeared during season nine as character Kalvin Mudflap Clarke in the Real Mother****ing Talk sketch. Season nine introduced a recurring sketch, The Lillian Verner Game Show, with Paul Vogt playing flamboyant host Dale Priskett. This mock game show involved contestants vying for products that are spoofs of Lillian Vernon products. A recurring character, Gail Cinder (played by Stephnie Weir), would always return as the show's reigning champion. This sketch also featured MADtv writer Michael Hitchcock as the game show's announcer. The 7am Condo Report,a sketch about retired elderly people residing in a Florida condo, debuted; it featured Stephnie Weir as Muriel (a woman who suffers recurring strokes), Ron Pederson as Clifford (an angry, bitter old man in a wheelchair), Daniele Gaither as Jelly (an old African-American woman who is obsessed with her grandchildren and black culture), and Paul Vogt as the nurse. Other season highlights were appearances by Jessica Alba (Honey) as pop star Jessica Simpson, Tommy Davidson and Fred Willard as the hosts of Real Mother****ing Talk, boxers and WWE wrestlers (including Sugar Shane Mosley and Trish Stratus), professional skater Tony Hawk promoting his fictional restaurant, Jeff Probst hosting a celebrity edition of Survivor, Cedric the Entertainer (Johnson Family Vacation) co-starring in a blaxploitation version of Frankenstein as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Frankie Muniz (Agent Cody Banks 2) returning in a sketch with Stephnie Weir's Dr. Kylie Johnson, Tom Bergeron in a parody of his show Hollywood Squares, and Groundlings alumnus Jennifer Coolidge. Mo Collins and Aries Spears announced that they would leave the show at the end of the ninth season. Opening montage: The title sequence begins with the MADtv logo appearing above the Los Angeles skyline. The theme song, performed by the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, begins and each repertory cast member is introduced alphabetically, followed by the featured cast. The screen dissolves into three live-action clips of an individual cast member. The three screens multiply until they occupy the entire screen. A still photo of the cast member appears on the screen with a caption of his/her name superimposed on it. When all cast members and guests are introduced, the music stops and the title sequence ends with the phrase "You are now watching MADtv". MADtv Season 7 The seventh season of MADtv aired from September 22, 2001, to May 18, 2002, with 25 episodes. Season summary: After Nicole Sullivan left at the end of season six, Debra Wilson was the last remaining member of the original cast. Season six featured players Andrew Daly and Stephnie Weir were promoted to repertory players. Also joining the cast were Frank Caliendo, Kathryn Fiore, Jill Michelle Meleán and Bobby Lee (the first Asian-American player on MADtv). Bobby Lee frequently performed an impersonation of Connie Chung in drag. Andrew Daly appeared as Politically Incorrect host Bill Maher, interviewing cast members performing celebrity impersonations. Kathryn Fiore played neurotic teen Kate Williams and sorority sister Taylor Rosenblatt, and impersonated Barbara Pierce Bush. Jill Michelle Meleán performed a dead-on impersonation of Drew Barrymore. Frank Caliendo performed impersonations of Richard Dreyfuss, Al Michaels, Al Pacino, Rod Roddy, Robin Williams, and FOX football commentator John Madden. Will Sasso appeared as *NSYNC member Lance Bass and impersonated Louie Anderson, Robert De Niro, Debra Marshall, Kenny Rogers, Steven Seagal, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Real Mother****ing Talk, a parody of political talk-shows such as Hardball with Chris Matthews and Politically Incorrect, debuted. The skit was hosted by Dollar Bill Montgomery (Aries Spears), who interviewed guests such as rappers (Method Man, Redman) and comedians (Earthquake, Corey Holcumb). Guest Michelle Trachtenberg appeared in a parody of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Alex Borstein's Ms. Swan. Trachtenberg, who actually appears in "Buffy", was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Comedy Series for her MADtv stint. Other guests included Todd Bridges, Vivica A. Fox, Frankie Muniz, *NSYNC members Lance Bass and Joey Fatone, wrestlers Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Man Show hosts Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel, and several hip-hop artists (including DMX, Ja Rule, Insane Clown Posse, Master P., Method Man, Redman, and the RZA). Will Sasso and Alex Borstein left at the end of season seven. Opening montage: The MADtv logo appears on the screen and the theme song, which is performed by the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, begins. A voice announces "It's MADtv! MADtv Season 6: The sixth season of MADtv aired from October 7, 2000, to June 23, 2001, with 30 episodes. Season summary: MADtv began its sixth season with several cast changes. Pat Kilbane and Phil LaMarr left the show at the end of the fifth season. Returning repertory players Alex Borstein, Mo Collins, Michael McDonald, Will Sasso, Aries Spears, Nicole Sullivan, and Debra Wilson were joined by Nelson Ascencio (a featured player from last season) and newcomer Christian Duguay. Andrew Daly, Dannah Feinglass, Jeff Richards, and Stephnie Weir were added as featured players. Cast members reprised many of their well-known characters and schticks. Alex Borstein and Will Sasso interviewed celebrities at red-carpet events, while Sasso performed celebrity impersonations of Robert De Niro and Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. Mo Collins appeared as Doreen Larkin, Trina Moss, Lorraine Swanson, and Liz Whitman-Goldfarb. Debra Wilson and Aries Spears appeared frequently as Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. The cast also added several new characters. Michael McDonald portrayed the Depressed Persian Tow Truck Man (later named Mofaz the next season), an irritable American immigrant who uses pop culture references to illustrate his family's shortcomings. Stephnie Weir played Dot Goddard, a seven-year-old girl whose intelligence pales next to her twin sister, Karen (Alex Borstein), a child genius who has written several books, found cures for diseases and planned NASA expeditions. Michael McDonald and Mo Collins played Dot's parents, who treasure Karen but despise Dot. Stephnie Weir also unveiled the characters Mrs. Campbell, a curious old lady, and Dr. Kylie, an immature, party-loving doctor. Season five guests Seth Green and Susan Sarandon returned periodically during season six. Christian Duguay impersonated Jay Leno, President George W. Bush, and *NSYNC member Joey Fatone. Duguay also played hyperactive preteen Edward and Loopgarue of "Loopgarue & Hulahoop," with Mo Collins as Hulahoop. Jeff Richards soon left MADtv but later appeared on Saturday Night Live, where he became well-known for his "Drunk Girl" character during his three-year tenure. Nelson Ascencio and Dannah Feinglass also left MADtv at the end of season six. Opening montage: The MADtv logo appears and the theme song, which is performed by the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, begins. Each member of the repertory cast, followed by the featured cast, is introduced alphabetically. The screen is divided into three live-action clips of each cast member performing recurring characters during the introductions. When the last featured cast member is introduced, the music stops and the title sequence ends with the phrase "You are now watching MADtv." MADtv Season 5: The fifth season of MADtv aired from September 25, 1999, to May 20, 2000, with 25 episodes. Season summary: Season five of MADtv began with only a few changes to the cast: Nelson Ascencio and Brooke Totman joined the show as featured players. This was the last season for Pat Kilbane and Phil LaMarr, who was an original cast member. Brooke Totman would also not return for another season. The previous year's newcomers, Michael McDonald and Mo Collins, reprised their wacky mother/son duo Stuart and Doreen Larkin; separately, Collins played Lorraine Swanson and McDonald played Marvin Tikvah and Rusty Miller. Alex Borstein's Ms. Swan starred in the multi-part sketch "Swan: The Homecoming," which featured special celebrity appearances in each episode by Garry Marshall, Mark Hamill, Dennis Hopper, Susan Sarandon, and Tony Shalhoub. After a notable weight loss, Will Sasso began to impersonate more celebrities such as James Gandolfini. Nicole Sullivan would be the first cast member to portray pop star Britney Spears. Aries Spears and Debra Wilson introduced a sketch called Reality Check, a fictitious talk show on BET. Former MADtv alumus Artie Lange made a special appearance, as well as celebrities Carmen Electra, Catherine O'Hara, George Carlin, Regis Philbin, Tim Robbins, and Alex Borstein's Family Guy co-star Seth Green (as recurring character Mr. Brightling). Opening montage: The MADtv logo appears and the theme song, which is performed by the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, begins. Cast members are introduced alphabetically. With his captivating charm and romantic smile, he can warm the heart of anyone. KATE REAVIS is a hauntingly beautiful ingénue with the ability to convey almost anything with a smile. She has played everything from a Disney princess to an axe murderer (2008 The Curse of Lizzie Borden 2: Prom Night). She is quirky and cute, and has great comedic timing and improv skills.
