John K. Samson, Nikki Komaksiutiksak, Curtis Walker: Keewatin Arctic

John K. Samson, Nikki Komaksiutiksak, Curtis Walker: Keewatin Arctic

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on November 21, 2009
Duration: 0
Today on the Dose we bring you a unlikely collaboration of Canadian artists of three differing genres, and a beautiful song they quickly put together in one day. Every Wednesday for 16 weeks, 3 musicians showed up at MCM Studios in Winnipeg. They didn t know who else would be arriving. They only knew that over the course of one evening they would have to get to know each other, write, record and mix one song. And that song would be made available for download the following morning. It was a risky proposition – putting musicians on the hot seat while putting the listener closer to the moment of creation than ever before. It could ve been an embarrassing disaster. But under the guidance of producer/musician/engineer Mike Petkau, all 16 turned out to be inspired and inspiring works celebrating the depth, diversity and passion of the Winnipeg music community. Petkau put together increasingly challenging combinations – revelling in the role of creative puppeteer and excited by the thought of what some of his favorite local musicians might make if spontaneously put into a room with each other. The ROTW Club captured the musical imagination of Winnipeg, and the compilation CD has been prepared to now capture the imagination of the rest of Canada. The project includes members of The Weakerthans, The Waking Eyes, Novillero, Nathan, Chic Gamine, Moses Mayes, BurnThe8Track, Twilight Hotel, Mahogany Frog and many more. The Weakerthans John K Samson was paired with Inuit throat singer Nikki Komaksiutiksak and electronic artist Blunderspublik for what has become inarguably the Club s most popular song (Keewatin Arctic) – being downloaded around the world. "....To promote interest in computers and information technology; in fact, all science among high school students...." :01:25: Where is ISEF held and who attends? "....The contestants are winners at local science fairs in their own communities/cities and come from all over the world. The winners at those local fairs are invited to compete at an international fair which is held in different US cities...." :04:02: Kelly describes the general schedule of the ISEF. "....The work is very often publication quality. They are high school kids but very often you will see real research that would undoubtedly meet the criteria for being accepted into a paper...." :07:37: When did the ACM get involved with ISEF? "....The first time I did it was about ten years ago and we've been involved every year...." :09:22: Are there some memorable moments that you can share from past ISEFs? "....Several times the computer entry was the overall winner and at that time they get quite a high profile...." :10:33: Why should schools get involved with the ISEF? "....The job market for computer and information technology is very good....Generally the outlook for the pool of trained people in computers and information technology in the future in the US and Canada looks dangerously low, so using the science fair to promote interest amongst students is a really good thing...." :14:30: If you were doing this interview on the ISEF, what question would you ask and then what would be your answer? "....'What mechanisms are there for making sure that teachers and students are aware of the opportunities that come from the ISEF?'...."
