DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) Racing the Planet have just e-mailed competitors for the Gobi March with their tent allocation. The event kicks off in about a month and I wrote before about how husband Tony, brother Eugene and bestest mates Paul Moran and Liam O Riain were heading that direction. Well you re just not gonna believe who they ve bagged as a tent buddy!! They ve only gone and been allocated to share a tent with the 27th most influential person in the World (that s according to Time Magazine)! Dean Karnazes is sharing with the Paddies on his second desert event this year, (he s on a quest to complete all 4 of the Racing the Planet series of desert races). Unperturbed by the news of a celebrity in their tent one of the team can be qouted as saying: I don t believe the name they gave our tent - Langerville. And none of us are from Cark. We should complain about no wans in our tent. Who ll make the tea, do the wash up and wash our socks etc? Can anything be done? Yeah there ll be words at our next Wednesday Night session I can tell ya ;-) I had to counter balance that level of sexism with a hefty dose of gratuitous Dean -ism, i.e. the picture above. SICHUAN, China, 14 May 2008 -- Two days after the largest earthquake to hit China in a generation, the Chinese Government formally requested the support of the international community to respond to the needs of affected families. There are an estimated 12 million school age children in Sichuan Province. More than 2 million of them live in the most damaged prefectures, according to UNICEF Communication Officer Dale Rutstein, who asserts that it is "no longer possible to keep track of the number of schools and public buildings that have collapsed, burying many children and adults under rubble." In response to today's request for aid, UNICEF China is readying relief supplies with an initial emphasis on health kits, tents and shelter materials, and water and sanitation supplies. Over the next few weeks, it is estimated that approximately $5 million will be needed to fully respond to immediate needs. Funds generated for the response to this disaster will most likely be used for the early relief phase as well as the longer-term recovery and development of quake-affected communities. People are evacuating from danger zones and homes just about everywhere are gone. The presence of rescue workers, tens of thousands of soldiers, the wail of ambulances go on and on. Can the people of China rise above the earthquake's massive destruction?

China were hit by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on May 12, 2008. Tens of thousands of people have died so far, while still, many survivors remain trapped in rubble from collapsed buildings, awaiting rescue. The majorities of these people are poor and have been poor for all of their lives. Now they lost their homes and are homeless. While we are lamenting for those who have died, we know that those who survived will still carry on. Food, medicine, temporary shelters...are just a few examples of help that this region desperately needs, to help save more lives, rebuild homes and cure the hearts burned in this sad disaster. We need to show them that love still exists on this earth and encourage them to carry on.
